Baptisms - 10

Baptism - For Whom? (1)

In our study on baptism so far, we have seen the three purposes of baptism: to externally and publicly witness about inner change that has come into a person by his confession and repentance for sins; to tell that he has submitted himself into the Lord’s hands, to prepare him for the coming inevitable judgment, for the accounting of his life, and for his eternal rewards and consequences; and baptism is an expression of the person’s commitment to be obedient to God. Here, it would be appropriate to also recall what baptism does not do, or, is not meant to do. Though this had already been stated in the very first article on this series, i.e., in the Prologue, but still, the readers would do well to remember that the very common notion amongst the people, that baptism makes one a ‘Christian’, acceptable to God, and worthy of gaining entry into heaven; Biblically speaking, is a patently false notion that has no support or affirmation of any kind from God’s Word the Bible. Another similarly false and baseless notion is that baptism is required for salvation, by baptism the baptized person becomes a member of God’s family, and his entry into heaven is guaranteed. In the days to come will also be looking into the various Biblical verses that are misinterpreted and misused in support of these false concepts. From today, we will begin considering who should take baptism, be baptized.

In the Gospel accounts, baptism has been shown as being given by John the Baptist, at the beginning of the narratives, i.e., prior to the beginning of the ministry of the Lord Jesus. Soon after the Lord’s baptism the Apostle John mentions that the disciples of the Lord Jesus also baptized (John 4:1-2). Then, from there onwards, there is no mention of any baptism. At the end of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, in His Great Commission to the disciples, the Lord asked them to evangelize the world and to baptize those who accepted the Gospel and became His disciples (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16). Other than this, in between, i.e., during the time of the Lord’s ministry on earth, and even after His resurrection, there is no mention of anyone being baptized either by Him or His disciples. When the Lord sent the Apostles and other disciples for ministry and preaching the message of repentance and the Kingdom of God being at hand (Matthew 10:5-15; Mark 6:7-13; Luke 10:1-17), He gave them various instructions about what they will face and how to handle situations. He even gave them the power to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons and even raise the dead (Matthew 10:7); and when they came back, they reported that they could do all these things (Mark 6:30; Luke 9:10; 10:17). When the Lord had sent them out while He was with them on earth, there is no mention of the Lord asking the disciples to also baptize people, while they preached and worked miracles; neither did the disciples report about baptizing anyone.

John the Baptist came as a fore-runner of the Lord Jesus, to prepare the way for Him, and came baptizing the baptism or repentance (Matthew 3:1, 2, 11). With the coming of the Lord and beginning His ministry, the coming kingdom of God and preparing for it through repentance and believing in the gospel (Matthew 4:17; Mark 1:15) became the main themes of His ministry; and till the Lord had prepared and made available the way to salvation, the preaching and propagation of baptism was not done. But in the sequence of instructions given in the Great Commission, the Lord placed baptism immediately after preaching the Gospel (Matthew 28:19), and before miracles (Mark 16:16-18); once again bringing baptism to the fore, in a far more meaningful, firm, and important manner, as the Lord’s commandment for all of His followers.

Before the Lord sacrificed Himself on the Cross of Calvary, paid through His life for the sins of entire mankind, was resurrected the third day, and thereby made available the way to salvation for all people of the whole world, He did not ask the disciples to baptize; since till then baptism had no significance. The significance of the Lord’s followers taking baptism, the application of the afore-mentioned three purposes of baptism in the lives of the followers of the Lord became relevant and effective only after the way for salvation had become ready and available for mankind. This does closely and strongly associate salvation and baptism, but by no stretch of imagination does it make baptism a condition for salvation - as is often misconstrued, wrongly taught and believed. Consider the above-mentioned references of the Great Commission from Matthew and Mark. In both the references the first thing is to make followers of Christ Jesus; and then those who become the followers, they are to be baptized. It is the person’s accepting and believing the Gospel message, not his taking baptism, that grants him this status of being a follower of the Lord Jesus. It is these followers of the Lord Jesus who are to be baptized, and not vice-versa; i.e., baptism does not make anyone a follower of the Lord, nor does it save anyone.

In the next article, we will consider this further through the examples given in God’s Word the Bible.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
