Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Apostles: Characteristics & Identification

In the previous articles we had started to see the about the users of the Spiritual gifts, in the list of 1 Corinthians 12:28 sequentially mentioned, based on their utility in the Church. We had seen that the primary importance is of those engaged in Ministry of the Word - the Apostles, Prophets, and Teachers. To avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations about these gifts and responsibilities, we started considering them on the basis of what is written in God’s Word about them, and how the people of the first Church, the initial Christian Believers would have understood about them, since that is their incontrovertible, irreplaceable, unalterable primary meaning. We saw what God’s Word says and does not say about being an Apostle, and it became evident that in the New Testament the Apostles were never appointed by men, but always by God; and no instructions or any criteria were ever given on the basis of which any appointment was to be made of any Apostles in the Church by any persons at any time, then or later. We also saw from Mark 3:13-15 that when the first Apostles were appointed by the Lord Jesus, He had a special purpose in a sequential order for them to fulfill; therefore, today, if anyone considers himself an Apostle, these purposes, in that same order, should also be seen in that person’s life; current Apostles cannot be different than the original Apostles, for that would be a contradiction. Today we will see another set of characteristics that defined the Apostles in the first Church, amongst the initial Christian Believers.

God’s Word is its own best interpreter and expositor, and God has given to us the characteristics of an Apostle, his definition, in His Word in Acts 1:2-3. In these two verses, we see three characteristics that had to be present in anyone called an Apostle; these are:

  1. Chosen by the Lord (verse 2)

  2. Received commandments from the Lord (verse 2)

  3. Had seen the resurrected Lord (verse 3)

In Paul’s life, through the vision he had of the Lord on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3-6), and the revelations he received according to which he taught and wrote to the Churches (1 Corinthians 11:23; 15:3; Galatians 1:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:2), these three characteristics were fulfilled (Acts 22:13-14). Paul affirmed about this in 1 Corinthians 9:1-2, and on multiple occasions called himself an Apostle in his letters (Romans 1:1; 1 Corinthians 1:1; 15:9; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Galatians 1:1; Ephesians 1:1; 1 Timothy 1:1). In contrast, unlike the case of Paul, as we have seen earlier, some (not all) of the ministers, as special “messengers of the Lord”, on occasions, were also called Apostles, e.g., Barnabas (Acts 14:14), Lord’s brother James (Galatians 1:19), and possibly Silas (if we see 1 Thessalonians 2:6 along with 1:1) etc. but probably all the three criteria of Acts 1:2-3 had not been fulfilled in their lives, and other than these isolated mentions for them as Apostles, they have not been addressed as Apostles, neither by the Church Elders, nor by themselves. The evident implication is that the word apostle has been used for them to convey that they were “special messengers” on the occasions the word has been used for them, but had not been appointed to the Apostolic Office, as Paul had been. And, there never was any confusion in the Church about this, it was never made an issue, it was never used as a precedence to cite and use for calling others as “apostles”, as is done these days.

There is another contrast to being appointed as Apostle by God - one instance, of men taking it upon themselves and appointing a person as an Apostle - appointing Matthias as an Apostle in place of Judas Iscariot. But the outcome of this appointment was uncertain and vague. We see in Acts 1:15-26, the disciples of the Lord were waiting to receive the power of the Holy Spirit, and then go out to preach the Gospel. They used to spend their time in prayer (Acts 1:4) and in joining worship in the Temple (Luke 24:53). In this situation, Peter got up on his own (Acts 1:15) and convinced the others to appoint another person as Apostle, in place of Judas Iscariot. Nowhere do we find written that Peter did this under the Lord’s instructions; nor does Peter say that he had prayed about this and was instructed by the Lord to do this. In contrast, the Lord Jesus before appointing the first twelve Apostles (Matthew 10:2), spent the whole night in prayer, conferring with God about this, and only then made this appointment (Luke 6:12-13). Also take note, that before His ascension, the Lord Jesus had instructed the disciples about their coming ministry, given them the Great Commission, and asked them to wait till they received the power of the Holy Spirit; but had never ever asked them to appoint someone in place of Judas Iscariot while they waited. But still, Peter stood up with this desire, justified it by quoting Scripture (Acts 1:16, 20-22), and eventually Matthias was chosen by them to replace Judas Iscariot. But there is an interesting conclusion to this whole contrived exercise, stated at the end of Acts 1:26 “And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles” - the Holy Spirit only had it written that he (Matthias) was “was numbered with the eleven apostles”; whereas if this had been done in the will of God, and had the approval of God, then a more appropriate expression would have been “and he became the twelfth Apostle.” But nowhere in the New Testament is Matthias mentioned again, nor do we see him being used as an Apostle. Quite likely, in the Lord’s will, it was Paul who was to be this twelfth Apostle, as we see happened later.

As, in the first Church, even while the true apostles were present, at that time, Satan had cleverly brought in his own people and placed them as “false apostles'' (2 Corinthians 11:13) in the Church, so that they may sabotage the Lord’s work and beguile people away from the way of truth. These false apostles went around as “professional preachers'' who would preach for money and they would speak about attractive worldly things, speaking about what the people wanted to hear, and not what God had to say (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Such preachers went around carrying letters of recommendation from the people of the world, to claim status, fame, and authority, and opposed the teachings given by Paul (2 Corinthians 3:1-3). This is quite similar to what is often seen today about these self-appointed or men-appointed “apostles” - they go around blowing their own trumpet about the status, fame, commendations, and popularity they have received from the people. Then, on this basis they project themselves, their teachings, and their works as special and important, and undermine or oppose the correct and factual teachings of God’s Word given out by the true ministers of God’s Word, whose ministry is without any drama, done in humility and in truthfulness to God’s Word, through the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus had said that the difference between the true and false prophets will become evident by their fruits (Matthew 7:16-20). On the basis of this saying of the Lord, Paul tells the Believers in Corinth, that you are our recommendation letters, and we have no need to blow our own trumpet or seek any commendation from any person, since you are the fruits of our labor which people see, and are able to discern the truth by contrasting with the “fruits” of the false apostles. The Lord too is well aware of our ministry and works, and knows the truth very well. We can see that the way of evaluating and deciding about a person being an Apostle is by what we have seen from Mark 3:13-15, from Acts 1:2-3, and by their “fruits”. Anyone claiming to be an Apostle, but not having these Biblical characteristics in him, is not a true Apostle of the Lord Jesus.

If you are a Christian Believer then it is important for you to note that most scholars of God’s Word, and those engaged in the Lord’s work in obedience to God’s Word are of the opinion that along with the passing away of the Apostles, the time of Apostolic office came to an end. After them, God never appointed any Apostles, nor ever instructed anyone to appoint any Apostles. By using the literal meaning of the word “apostles” as someone appointed for a special purpose or with a special authority to convey a message, people can misuse this term to claim a special status and privileges in the Church, acquire name and fame, and use it as a title to have authority over others. Maybe that the preaching of these alleged apostles will be very attractive and appealing, done in the name of the Lord God, having a lot of Biblical knowledge, and appear to be factual - just as Peter’s address and arguments for appointing the twelfth apostle were. But their actual truth will be seen by their fruits - their lives, the worldly and populistic themes of their preaching, their lack of adherence to the Gospel and of call for repentance from sins, the absence of the fruits of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Instead, they concentrate upon physical healings and worldly prosperity. These modern-day apostles usually inspire and lead people towards temporal blessings, and physical healings; but not towards repentance from sins, salvation and eternal life, and its eternal blessings. Biblically speaking, this is not a characteristic of a true Apostle of the Lord Jesus.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 14

  • वे उसके साथ रहें;
  • वे उसके द्वारा भेजे जाने के लिए तैयार रहें – जब और जहाँ प्रभु भेजे;

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Apostles - Appointed by God

In the previous articles we had seen from 1 Corinthians 12:28 the sequential list of the Spiritual gifts based on their utility in the Church. We had seen that the primary importance is of those engaged in Ministry of the Word - the Apostles, Prophets, and Teachers. As has happened with the last two gifts in this list, the same has also happened with the first two - Apostles and Prophets, as well. Presently they are grossly misunderstood and misused to project a person of being of a higher status and authority in the Church, of having a different and increased importance than others, whereas this is inconsistent with the Word of God. We have already seen that in God’s eyes, every ministry, work, gift and person is of equal status and importance, since everyone’s ministry, work and required gifts have been determined and assigned by God, given by the Holy Spirit; they are not according to the desires and prayers of anyone.

One way of avoiding misunderstanding these gifts and ministries is to look at them with the same perspective as the people of the first Church, the initial Christian congregations would have seen them when they were being taught and explained about these services. That is their primary and actual meaning, which will never change with time, place, culture, and people, since God’s Word in unchanging and unalterable, always remaining the same. On this basis, even today the meaning of being and Apostle or Prophet or Teacher is the same as it was at the time of the first Church. Today, many people use the names of these ministries as titles, and apply them before their names, in their self-promotional messages, to show how special and how prominent they are. But the fact is that all of us, no matter what title we may use for ourselves, are sinners. We have been saved not by our works or status or position but by the grace of the Lord Jesus. Whatever work and ministry have been given to us, it is by God’s will, not our own. Whatever God has entrusted to anyone is not for personal use, nor for acquiring worldly name, fame, and possessions, but for preaching and propagating the Gospel and glorifying God. All of us should endeavor to emulate Paul’s attitude towards his ministry, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10), instead of knowingly or inadvertently robbing or denying God His glory.

In this context, today we will see and understand the term Apostles, from the Word of God, as the first Church and the initial Christian Believers would have seen and understood it. This is a very commonly used title, about which many wrong teachings and misunderstandings have been stated; but what does God’s Word actually say about it?

The word that has been translated as Apostle, in the original Greek language means “a delegate or an ambassador,” i.e., someone appointed for a special purpose or with a special authority to convey a message. This name was first given by the Lord Jesus to His 12 disciples. It is important to note that the Lord did not call all His disciples, i.e., all those who had believed in Him and used to move around with Him as Apostles; but only the 12 whom He had specially chosen from amongst those who went around with Him (Luke 6:12-16). The second thing to take note of here is that in the Gospel accounts right till the end, this name Apostles was only used for those 12 disciples (e.g., before the Lord’s being caught, during the Passover feast - Luke 22:14; telling the people about the Lord, after His resurrection - Luke 24:9-10). Therefore, not everyone of the Lord’s disciple was an Apostle; but only those from amongst His disciples whom He had appointed to this. We also see that for these Apostles, the Lord had a special purpose, which is something like the Spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit in the Church and is related to the Word Ministry.

These 12 Apostles were meant to be somewhat different and special than the rest, as has been written in Mark 3:13-15 about them:

  • They remain with Him.

  • They always be ready to be sent out by Him - whenever and wherever the Lord would send them.

  • They be ready to preach according to the Lord’s instructions; and have power to heal sicknesses and cast out demons.

The order in which these things have been stated for those appointed as Apostles is also of significance. Generally, people are more interested and run after the last-mentioned characteristic, i.e., preach and do miracles; but do not have as much desire to spend time with the Lord and to work according to His will. But we see here that the disciple of the Lord, the Apostle has to first learn to be with the Lord; to surrender and learn to do according to the Lord’s will; and only then should desire to preach and do miraculous works.

Later on, in the New Testament, the word Apostles was also used with a somewhat different meaning, other than being the special appointees of the Lord Jesus; the special “messengers of the Lord” were also called Apostles, e.g., Barnabas (Acts 14:14), Lord’s brother James (Galatians 1:19), and possibly Silas (if we see 1 Thessalonians 2:6 along with 1:1) etc. But also, not every minister of the Lord, engaged in the Lord’s work was called Apostle; e.g., important and commendable ministers of the Lord like Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Onesimus, Epaphroditus have never been called Apostles in God’s Word.

Also, people entrusted with the works and taking care of the Church were also addressed as Apostles (1 Corinthians 12:28-29; Ephesians 4:11). But here we also note another important related point; in both of these letters, to Corinthians and Ephesians, in the quoted verses it has also been said that these Apostles had been appointed by God; they were neither appointed by men nor were self-appointed to this responsibility. One possibility is that the Apostles being referred to over here are from those 12 whom the Lord Jesus had initially appointed, and they have now been entrusted with the works and taking care of the Church. But in any case, the Apostles in the New Testament were appointed by God, not man.

In context of the Apostles not being appointed by men, there is another very important point to note. Later, in the letters written to Titus and Timothy by Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, when instructions were written about appointing elders and others for the works and taking care of the Church, and the required characteristics of those who could be considered for this appointment were given (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9), then at that time neither for the works and taking care of the Church, nor for preaching the gospel and teaching the Word, no mention was made of appointing any Apostles by any person (Titus 1:5), nor, like they were given for appointing elders, were any characteristics given according to which people could appoint someone as an Apostle in the Church.

Also take note of the fact that in Romans 16, the last chapter of the book, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit Paul remembers, commends, and thanks many people for their Christian ministry and help, and in the first verse mentions an office of responsibility in the Church, in commending Phoebe as a deaconess of the Church. But in Romans 16:7, except for the earlier declared Apostles, Paul does not call anyone else an Apostle. Similarly in 1 Corinthians 16 also there is no mention of anyone as an Apostle, although here too Paul remembers, commends, and thanks many people for their Christian Ministry and work and helping him.

If you are a Christian Believer, then beware and trust that the Lord God has not left us helpless and without resources to recognize the wolves that creep amongst Christian Believers in sheep’s clothing. He has given the way to recognize them in His Word, and has given us His Holy Spirit to help us to learn and understand God’s Word. It is very important for Christian Believers to learn and understand that in God’s Word nowhere has it ever been instructed that Apostles be appointed by men, or self-appointed; nor have any criteria or characteristics ever been given for considering people to be appropriate for this responsibility, nor has any method of discerning, deciding and appointing Apostles in the Church been prescribed in God’s Word. The Lord wants that we should first examine, evaluate for it being the truth, and only then should we accept any teaching or notion (1 John 4:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). One way of evaluating a person being an Apostle is by what we have seen today from Mark 3:13-15. We will look at some other characteristics and other related things about being an Apostles in the next article.

Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 13

Click Here for the English Translation

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - 2

In the previous article we had seen about users of the gifts of the Holy Spirit given to the Christian Believers for their work and ministry. Earlier, we had also seen that no Christian Ministry, and no Spiritual gift is lesser or smaller than any other, none is of lesser importance than another. In God’s eyes all are equal, all are equally important, and for every person the work and ministry God has assigned to them, it’s proper fulfilment is essential, necessary, blessed and beneficial for the person. There is no need to desire anyone else’s gifts and ministry and pray for this, no one ought to consider their gifts and ministry to be of any lesser importance.

According to the utility in the Church, in 1 Corinthians 12:28, a serial order and listing has been given; this is only to indicate how often a particular gift might be used in the Church; it is not meant to say or place the gifts and ministries in any order of being greater or smaller. According to this order, the most useful gifts are those related to ministry of the Word, i.e., Apostles, Prophets, and Teachers. The next in order of utility are gifts related to works - the doing of miracles, healings, and helps. Last in order of utility are the gifts of administrations and of speaking in ‘tongues’, i.e., speaking in other known and named earthly languages. This is because the gift of ‘tongues’ will only be required if some preacher who does not know the local language comes and has to minister the Word of God; otherwise, in the day-to-day working of the Church, this gift is not of any use. But nowadays amongst the people, thanks to the preachers and teachers of the wrong doctrines and false teachings related to the Holy Spirit, people have hardly any desire for the first three gifts of the most utility, i.e., the gifts related to ministering the Word of God, and everybody is crazy after the gift of the least utility in the Church - the gift of ‘tongues’ - all because of the misinterpretation and misuse of God’s Word to beguile people.

Similarly, when we look at Ephesians 4:11-13 “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;” it is another affirmation of the same fact - that in the body of Christ, in His Church, the primary need and necessity is of the Word Ministry, of giving the right teachings. If the Word Ministry is done properly, then as has been written in this reference from Ephesians, the Lord’s people will grow towards perfection, the Body of Christ will grow, and the other ministries will serve well as well. It is for this reason that from the point-of-view of utility in the Church, the primary or first three the gifts are related to ministering the Word of God.

But today, a lot of confusion and preaching of wrong teachings and behavior related to the first three gifts has also become common-place. Today many people have started to call themselves “Apostles” or “Prophets” or “Miracle Workers” or “Healers” and the internet is full of preachers with these titles and descriptions of their works and their messages promoting themselves; but hardly anyone calls himself a “Teacher” and strives to bring the right teachings before the people. Though there are some who serve the Word faithfully, but they are not much appreciated or acknowledged by the people; who generally prefer the preachers with a dramatic presentation and content. This is in accordance with what the Holy Spirit had got written in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” When the Holy Spirit Got written these letters by the Holy Spirit, then what the terms “Apostles”, “Prophets”, etc. meant to those primary readers to whom these letters had been addressed, the same meaning holds true even today for us, since God and His Word never change. Therefore, that primary meaning can never be replaced or changed with another, else God’s Word will become fallible and alterable. In the next article we will see the meaning of the terms “Apostles”, “Prophets”, etc. from God’s Word.

If you are a Christian Believer then it is essential that you take due care to preach and teach God’s Word honestly, diligently, and factually. Do not get carried away into accepting, believing, and propagating wrong concepts and teachings by those impressing others through self-assigned positions and labels of authority. First test everything against God’s Word (Acts 17:11), and only accept, believe, and preach that which stands up to this critical evaluation.
