Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Teachers & Teaching

We have seen in the previous articles first two Spiritual gifts and the related Word Ministries - Apostles and Prophets, from 1 Corinthians 12:28. Today we will look at the third gift and Ministry related to preaching and teaching God’s Word - “Teacher.” It is an interesting thing that of the Spiritual gift mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, people mostly earnestly desire and pray for gifts and ministries like being an Apostle, a Prophet, to be able to Prophesy, to do miracles and healings, and to speak in ‘tongues’, i.e., the gifts and ministries through which they can show themselves to be special, important, of having a higher status. But hardly anyone shows any interest or desire in other gifts like being a Teacher, helping and serving others, having wisdom and discernment, having faith, being able to discern spirits, etc. Another thing that is of importance about these lesser or never desired Spiritual gifts is that for utilizing them, one has to spend time with God and His Word, have to labor amongst the people, and quite often the general public does not want to hear or like the straightforward teachings of God; therefore, the people with these gifts and ministries do not usually get any recognition, honor, name, fame, and status from the people, instead they are often opposed, rejected, and ridiculed. Quite possibly that is why hardly any Christian Believers desire these gifts.

Let us look at some Biblical examples about teaching God’s Word and its effects:

  • When the Lord Jesus taught the people, He did so with authority, and not like the scribes (Mark 1:22), meaning not with any bookish or human knowledge. But He explained and clarified the Word, taught it in its correct form, in its true meaning. The Lord also made it a point to teach the people according to their level of understanding and their ability to grasp what was being taught, explaining to the people through simple examples and parables (Mark 4:33-34). A Christian teacher should follow, and teach according to this example set by the Lord.

  • Paul reminded the Church at Corinth about the teachings they had received from him, “And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:1; 4-5). In other words, the teachings that were given by a knowledgeable highly educated person like Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, were not through his own intellectual abilities, not using words of human or worldly wisdom but with the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Similarly, Paul wrote to the Church in Thessalonica, “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake. And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 1:5-6). Here too we see that the teachings of God’s Word which Paul gave were not through human wisdom and ability, but with conviction and by the power of the Holy Spirit. We also see here that the Believers in Thessalonica had to suffer much affliction for following the Word of God, but they also had the joy of the Holy Spirit, their lives were changed, and they started to emulate the Lord - which is a proof of receiving and applying the pure, uncorrupted Word of God.

  • Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Paul wrote to Timothy about teaching God’s Word:

    • “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness” (2 Timothy 2:15-16). Meaning that the one ministering God’s Word has to keep in mind the fact that he should not in any way misuse God’s Word to fulfill his own selfish desires, but to use it rightly, stay clear of profane babblings, his own life and behavior should not in any manner bring any shame, and he and his works should be according to God’s instructions and will, not men, for pleasing God, not men.

    • “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:2-5). Meaning, the one engaged in the ministry of teaching the Word of God should always be ready, and in fulfilling his ministry should exercise great patience. The teacher of the Word, if it is required, has God’s permission to rebuke to correct people. It is his God given responsibility that he should make people understand God’s Word. This also implies that those who learn God’s Word, should be prepared to listen to rebuke, and remain humble. The Teacher of God’s Word has to teach God’s instructions and teachings in a forthright manner to the people, even if he has to suffer their opposition for doing so, even if the teachings are harsh and bitter for people to accept. The Teacher should not succumb to falling into the temptation of speaking and teaching only pleasing things to gain popularity and acceptance.

    • “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Meaning, that the teacher of God’s Word should use the Word of God itself to explain and teach it to the people. He should never forget that whatever he teaches under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God the Holy Spirit, who resides in every Born-Again Christian Believer to remind, teach, explain, and instruct them about God’s Word (John 14:26; 16:13-14; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13), will explain it to the Believers, will help them to understand it. It is only through the use of God’s Word under the guidance of the Holy Spirit that people are able to correctly and properly understand the teachings of God’s Word, and it is only through the Word that they are made complete, and equipped for good works; also see Ephesians 4:11-12 in this context.

In none of the above examples, or anywhere else in God’s Word do we find any instruction or support for using dramatic behavior and actions to teach God’s Word; or or use it for any worldly and physical gains through this Spiritual gift and ministry. Rather, every example speaks of using God’s Word with integrity, in a forthright manner, in the power of the Holy Spirit. The proof of the teachings being given in accordance with God’s instructions is the changed lives of the people who listen and accept them. Teachings not in accordance with God’s instructions may seem good to hear, create an emotional ‘high’ in the listeners, but there will be no change in the lives of the audience and they will soon fall back into their previous state. But we have seen that those who learned and accepted God’s Word in accordance with the teachings of God’s Word, were willing to suffer all kinds of persecutions for it, but never turned away from it’s truth and integrity. When the Teachers appointed by God teach God’s Word through the power of the Holy Spirit, then it is not something “according to their own desires, for satisfying those who have itching ears” (2 Timothy 4:3-4), but they are teachings that change hearts and minds, like a double-edged sword “piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

If you are a Christian Believer, and you have been entrusted by God with the responsibility of teaching God’s Word, then ask God to fulfill Isaiah 50:4 for you; always keep the above-mentioned things and the example of the Lord Jesus teaching the people in mind, and follow them. The more you share God’s Word with others, the more will it help you and others grow in faith and in the Lord, and you will find that not only are you growing, but also the deep and mysterious things of God’s Word also become clear to you. But also, beware that Satan does not bring any pride in you, and you start considering yourself to be someone special and knowledgeable, endowed with exceptional wisdom; for, wherever there is pride, fall will soon follow.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

मसीही सेवकाई और पवित्र आत्मा के वरदान / Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 17

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophets & Prophecy

In the previous article we had started to examine the second gift and ministry given in 1 Corinthians 12:28 - Prophets and Prophecy. This gift is also related to the Word Ministry in the Church. We had seen that Biblically speaking, to be a Prophet and to prophesy does not necessarily mean to foretell about future things, but it also means to stand before the people to honestly speak a message or teaching from God, at any cost. We had also seen that unlike the modern day “Prophets”, the Prophets of God were people who not only were completely surrendered to God, but also spoke His Word or message forthrightly and candidly; they exposed the sin and evil of the people, and their being contrary to God in their lives and behavior. Because of these things, God’s prophets and their “prophecy” or messages were usually not popular amongst people, were usually not appreciated or liked by the people. The Prophets mentioned in the Bible, usually suffered persecution, rejection, and sorrows at the hands of the people they ministered amongst, but still fulfilled their ministry from God. God’s Prophets, in the Bible, were neither popular, nor used their ministry as a title or status to gain name, fame and worldly prosperity. In contrast, today many people call themselves “Prophets” and claim to “Prophesy” by the power of the Holy Spirit, but their work and ministry is usually related to using these as a title or status symbol, to gain name, fame and worldly prosperity. They usually stay clear of exposing the sins and actual spiritual condition of the people, and speaking the clear Word of God with honesty and commitment. Their own lives, preaching, and teachings are full of popular things related to physical healings, temporal benefits, and gaining material things, instead of teaching about sin, repentance, forgiveness, salvation, judgment, eternal life, etc., all of which is quite unlike what the teachings of the Word of God speak about (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 4:1-5), and their lives and ministry in no way conforms to the life and ministry of the prophets appointed by the Holy Spirit in the first Church and the initial Christian congregations.

Today we will also see how the term “to prophesy” has been used in God’s Word, in the Old as well as the New Testaments, with different meanings, but all have been called “to prophesy.” Through this we will understand that in the Bible “to prophesy” does not only mean foretelling the future as these teachers of false doctrines and wrong teachings catering to popular public sentiments usually emphasize, and most of their “prophecies” do not actually come true. We had seen yesterday that the meaning of the words “prophet” and “prophesying” in the original Greek language of the New Testament is “to speak before” - in context of time or in context of before people; and the message conveyed in that context; similarly, in the Old Testament as well, the original Hebrew words too mean the same thing, have the same implications. It is clear from these word-meanings that in the original languages, for their initial audiences, the terms “prophet” and “prophesying” not only meant those who tell about the future and the messages related to the future happenings, but also the people who came and spoke God’s message before the people, even if it was about the people’s current unspiritual state and ungodly behavior, they too were “prophets” and “prophesied” on behalf of God.

Consider some examples of the use of the term “To prophesy” from the Bible:

  • To call upon the name of a deity - 1 Kings 18:29 - the “prophets” of Baal “prophesied” calling the name of their deity, but nothing happened.

  • To speak to the people about a message or a topic given by God, to put it before them 1 Corinthians 14:3.

  • To forewarn about a future event on behalf of God - Ezekiel 36:1, 3, 6; 37:12-14.

  • To give a commandment to the people on behalf of God - Ezekiel 37:4, 9-10.

  • To speak under the influence of the power of God - Amos 3:8.

  • To praise and worship God using musical instruments and by singing songs - 1 Chronicles 25:1-6.

  • To reveal or tell something hidden or concealed - Luke 22:64.

Besides this, in the New Testament, the teachings Paul gave to Timothy under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in the two letters written to Timothy, they too tell us about the characteristics of a person speaking on behalf of God, and the qualities in God’s messages that he speaks. 2 Timothy chapter 2 tells about the characteristics that should be present in a prophet or spokesman of God. About the qualities of the message of such a person, it is written in 2 Timothy 3:16 that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” The implication is that the person speaking God’s message, has to fulfill his ministry not through messages from his own thinking and understanding, but from the Scriptures. In fulfillment of his ministry, from the Scriptures he should speak to the people about “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” The spokesman of God has to “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). Compare the clear and straightforward teachings of the Bible, with the lives, works, and messages of these modern day so-called “prophets” and their “prophecies”, and it will immediately become apparent whether they and their ministry is from the Holy Spirit or not; because the Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of Truth” and “guides into all truth” (John 16:13); He never speaks any lies, nor does He ever mislead or wrongly guide anyone about anything.

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is a humble request that you understand the actual meaning and implications of any term or word used in the Bible, please see how it has been used at different places in God’s Word, and thereby stay safe from falling into wrong teachings and doctrines. Examine and see if these modern day so-called “prophets” and their “prophecies” are conforming to what the Bible says; do they measure up to the criteria of God’s Word. Beware of all false teachings being spread by Satan to beguile and mislead people, and warn others, teach them as well to be safe and secure.

मसीही सेवकाई और पवित्र आत्मा के वरदान - 16 / Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 16

English Translation

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophets

We have been learning about the gifts of the Holy Spirit in Christian life and Ministry. Although all the gifts given by the Holy Spirit and all the works and ministries assigned by God for His Believers are equal, none is lesser, or of lesser importance than any other, but according to the frequency of use in the Church - often or occasionally, some gifts have been placed in a serial order in 1 Corinthians 12:28. In this serial listing, the most often used and placed up in the list are related to the ministry of God’s Word; and the least often used are the gifts related to speaking in other ‘tongues’ or languages - about which we have already seen. The first gift related to the Word Ministry, is of being an Apostles, about which we have seen in the previous two articles. Today, from the Word of God the Bible, we will look about the next gift and ministry, being a Prophet.

Generally speaking, whenever the word prophet or to prophesy or prophecy comes before us, we think of a person who can foretell the future and the things that are going to happen in the future. But the words translated in English as prophets or prophesy, do not have only this meaning in their original languages, in the Bible. The word used in the original language of the New Testament, Greek, means “one who can foretell” i.e. speak ahead. This can be both, speak beforehand in terms of time, i.e. tell about the future; as well speak ahead of or in front of others, e.g. a speaker or an orator. So, if anyone were to stand before people and give a message or teaching from God, then that person would be a ‘prophet’ and his message would be a ‘prophecy.’

In this context, there is a very important Biblical fact to be taken note of and kept in mind - although God did raise up people who received visions and messages from Him to tell to His people, to tell them their coming blessings or punishments from God, to tell the world about the coming end of the world and judgment, and these God appointed people are called “Prophets” and their messages are called “prophecies” in the Bible; but neither in the Old, nor in the New Testament, all the people speaking on behalf of God have always been labeled and accepted as “Prophets” nor have whatever message they gave been taken as “prophecy.” Also, both in the Old as well as the New Testaments, God has spoken against those who try to predict the future, especially as ‘professionals’ of this field, other than when it has been at the behest of God. These professional predictors of the future have been condemned in the Bible as being against God and His Word, and have been shown as people working under the influence of demons (Deuteronomy 18:9-14; Acts 16:16-18). The implication is that not everyone who claims to speak in the name of God and predict the future, is necessarily been sent by God; even Satan can send his people with similar powers. And, this is also a fact that to obstruct the work of God and to beguile people away from God, Satan does do this. We also see from the Bible that whoever would claim to be a “Prophet” and prophesy, it was necessary that whatever he had said is also fulfilled; else, God’s commandment was to kill such false prophets and fortune tellers (Deuteronomy 18:20-22); so that people would be cautious about claiming to be “Prophets”, and not make false prophecies in the name of God to use this for gaining personal benefits. In the New Testament too we have been cautioned about discerning false prophets and beware of them (1 John 4:1-6).

There is a very important fact associated with being a Prophet from God and carrying God’s message to His people; if the Prophet would say anything on his own, or add to what God has said through his own understanding, God would reject all such additions; He is under no compulsion to comply with them. Only that which God has said to that Prophet would be acceptable to God; if he assumed something or said anything from his side in the name of God, God would caution that Prophet and ask him to correct himself. We see this well illustrated in the Prophet Nathan’s concurring in God’s name with King David to build the Temple of God, and then God correcting Nathan and sending him back to tell God’s will to David (2 Samuel 7:1-5). Also, if any God appointed Prophet would hesitate to deliver God’s message, not speak up on behalf of God, and tried to evade his God given responsibility, even then he would not escape his duty of speaking up God’s truth. God would create such a restlessness in them, that eventually they had to speak up for Him (Jeremiah 20:9); or create such circumstance around them, that they would have to do what God had told them to do, as was the case with the Prophet Jonah, assigned to preach in Nineveh, tried to evade it, but eventually had to go and do it.

According to the Word of God, the Bible, to be a messenger of God, i.e., a Prophet, and to speak God’s messages to the people on behalf of God, whether it was about the future or about the current happenings, was never ever something to be taken lightly, nor can it be taken lightly or frivolously even today by anyone. To be called a Prophet of God is not to take up a title or acquire a status, and then use it to gain name, fame, and worldly prosperity. Rather, then, as well as now, it has always been a very demanding position of great responsibility, and accountability to God. When we see the Prophets of God in the Bible, whether in the Old or in the New Testament, they all had a very difficult life, the people of their times did not give them any importance, hardly anyone paid any heed to what they had to say, and practically no one liked their messages. To be a Prophet of God and to ‘prophesy’ on God’s behalf would tantamount to being treated harshly, with contempt, and asking to be opposed by the society. Because God’s Prophets would speak the bitter and unpalatable truths of God to the officials, leaders, and the general public, about their lives and the sins in their lives. The Prophets of God were usually engaged in telling the people, officials, leaders etc. why and how God was against them, and what He was going to do about this unacceptable state; the Prophets often had to suffer persecution and rejection, even be in danger of losing their lives for the bitter and unpalatable truths of God that they were sent to speak on behalf of God.

But in stark contrast to this evident harsh life and working of God’s Prophets delivering God’s messages from the Bible, our current, modern-day “Prophets” are living and working in a very comfortable and luxurious manner. The “Prophets” of today “prophesy” about what people like to hear, they loudly and dramatically talk about and glibly promise a life of worldly prosperity, physical enjoyments, and temporal benefits, instead of speaking to people about their sin, repentance and forgiveness from sin, being submitted to the Lord Jesus and obedient to His Word, preparing for the coming judgment of God, etc. Today people are using this responsibility and Spiritual gift as a title and status symbol, not to speak up about the truths of God and His Word, but to show themselves as special and commendable, which is quite unlike what the Bible says and shows. In the next article we will see in how many different ways and with varying meanings the term “prophecy” has been used in the Bible, and understand the meaning of these words in greater depth from that.

If you are a Christian Believer, then you should strive to learn God’s Word and to see, learn, and understand what the Bible says about these things. Beware and stay away, stay safe from those who use the Spiritual ministry and gifts to speak populistic things of worldly and physical benefits, instead of God’s truth factually - however harsh it may be for the hearers. Make it a habit to first check and confirm, and only then believe and accept what people are saying, especially if it is of temporal value.
