The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 33 – The Law’s Demands / व्यवस्था की माँगें – 1

Why The Law Cannot Save Us – 24

Law’s Demands (Part 1)

After looking at the limitations of the Law and then the Law's purposes in the previous articles, at the end of the previous article, we concluded with the mention of a great demand of the Law, which is yet another reason why it was unable to give salvation or forgiveness of sins.

To live and walk according to the law, two very difficult conditions have to be adhered to; they are:

  • Galatians 3:10 “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them’”.
  • James 2:10 “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all”.

In other words, if the Law is to be followed, it has to be done in its entirety, without missing out on anything. If one misses on even one thing, he will be guilty of disobeying the whole Law, and will be considered guilty of the whole Law. And we've seen before that sin is ingrained in man, that even the saved Christians often sin (Romans 7:15-20, James 3:1-2, 1 John 1:8-10). So, the implication is evident; since everyone sins, in mind-thoughts-deeds-behavior; therefore, everyone violates the Law. So, no man can ever follow the Law in its entirety, with the diligence that is required to obey it. Let us understand this with a simple example; You walk out of the house wearing very clean clothes, and a vehicle on the road outside splatters some roadside debris and mud; some of the drops fall here and there on your clothes. All the rest of your clothes are clean, with only a few specks of dirt splattered here and there; still your whole garment will be considered dirty, will have to be changed, and washed. Similarly, being guilty of transgressing or being unable to follow the Law in even one thing, labels the person as "guilty", and disqualifies from being declared righteous and pure by the Law.

That's why Peter said, "Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?" (Acts 15:10). The Lord Jesus Christ was the only one who fulfilled the Law for us, and took away the necessity of obeying the Law from before us: “And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:13-15). Therefore, the keeping of the Law or trying to be righteous by works is insufficient to give salvation (Matthew 5:20), the Law is unable to do so.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 32 – The Law’s Purpose / व्यवस्था का उद्देश्य – 2

Why The Law Cannot Save Us – 23

Law’s Purpose (Part 2)

We had seen in the previous article that a purpose of the Law is to make man aware of his abilities and incapabilities; that he can never become acceptable to God and righteous by his works. The second purpose of the Law, as we saw in the previous article in the context of the fourth limitation of the Law from Romans 7:7-13, is to identify sin. The law is not given for the solution or remission of sins, but for the recognition of sins, and to remind man of his sinful condition, “Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.” (Romans 7:13). Even before this, in Romans itself, God, the Holy Spirit, through Paul, has made the point evident and clear. It is written, "20. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22. even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;” (Romans 3:20-22). Consider these three verses a little carefully:

  • In verse 20, the Holy Spirit had it written that keeping the Law will not justify any living being. Because the purpose of the Law is not to justify, but to provide recognition of sin. The Law puts before man the criteria of God, and the standards of His righteousness. Man, by placing anything for comparison before them, can identify what is acceptable to God, and what is not; what is right in God’s view and what is not; whom He believes to be right and just, whom not. To understand it, look at it like this: the doctor diagnoses the disease by the help of blood tests, X-rays, and other such tests, and then tells the solution, the treatment of that disease. The tests being asked by him are not the cure of the disease, they are not the treatment of the disease; but only the way to diagnose the disease. In the same way God's Law is also a way of revealing man's sin-sickness to him, making him recognize its presence in him, and showing the futility of his own efforts to cure that disease. The Law is not the cure or solution to the disease of sin.

  • In verse 21 the Holy Spirit explains that the righteousness of God is apart from the Law, not by the Law. This righteousness of God is revealed, outside the Law; And the Law and the prophets themselves testify to this righteousness. This righteousness of God is not through the works of man, but it is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Romans 1:17; Jeremiah 23:5-6; 33:16).

  • Verse 22 makes it quite clear that this righteousness of God, which is apart from the Law, can in no way ever be earned, or inherited, by anyone, but is graciously given only to those who believe in the Lord; It is only for them.

Also, for those who still want to justify themselves in the sight of God through the observance of the Law, the Law has a great demand too, which no man has ever been able to fulfill. We will consider this requirement of the Law in the next article. But for now, if you are a Christian, and consider yourself to be righteous by observing any kind of “law” — whether of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God through your works; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you can become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the Law, but by only following God's prescribed path of repentance and submission. Therefore, while you have the time and opportunity, make the right decision now, and leave the useless and fruitless path.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 31 – The Law’s Purpose / व्यवस्था का उद्देश्य – 1

Why The Law Cannot Save Us – 22

Law’s Purpose (Part 1)

In previous articles, we've seen the limitations of the Law from Romans 7 that the Law can only help man to recognize sin, and it can hold man guilty of sin. The law can also prescribe punishment for that sin and offense, but it cannot prevent man from committing sin. Nor can it restore the sinner to fellowship with God even after he has been punished. Also, we have seen that because the Law has been taken away from us by God through the Lord Jesus, therefore, the Christian Believers have no need to go into observing the things of the Law. Rather, their still insisting to do so is not only disobedience to God, but by trying to reinstate what has been taken away by God, it is also demeaning and insulting Him. Despite the many limitations and incapabilities of the Law, why did God give His Law to men, to His chosen people? God does not do anything in vain, He has a plan, a purpose in everything. So, what is the plan and what is the purpose in the giving of the Law? Today and in the next article we will see and understand the answer to this question.

In an earlier article of this series, we took a very brief look at human history, and came to the conclusion that whether man seeks to be righteous and holy through his own wisdom, his efforts, his self-devised deeds and actions, or through the Laws given by God, by the observance of statutes, sacrifices, etc., the result is the same — man never becomes righteous, holy, and perfect, by any of his works, “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God" (Romans 3:19). Even though the Law of God is in the hands of man, he is still unable to obey it. Ultimately, every human being becomes acceptable to God only through repentance of sins, and through God's grace and forgiveness.

That is the first purpose of the Law - to make man aware of the limits of his abilities because of the sin in him, and to keep him conscious of those limits. The author of Hebrews expressed this in these words, "For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices, there is a reminder of sins every year.” Verse 11 “And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” (Hebrews 10:1-3, 11). In the next article we will consider further about the purpose of the Law.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 30 – The Law’s Limitation / व्यवस्था की सीमा – 21

Why The Law Cannot Save Us – 21

Law’s Capabilities & Incapabilities (Part 4)

The fourth limit of the Law is written in Romans 7:13, but it is necessary to look at it in its context in verses 7-13. In verse 7 the Holy Spirit has written that the Law is not sin, rather it identifies sin — it is a standard to measure, to identify what is right and acceptable in the eyes of God, and what is not. Then verses 8–11 explain how desires arise from the recognition of sin, and by falling for wanting to fulfil those desires we fall into sin, which we saw in an earlier article in the context of 7:5. Then in verse 12 the Holy Spirit writes down three more qualities of the Law, that it is holy, just, and good. Then Paul writes in verse 13, "Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful” (Romans 7:13). That is to say that the deficiency is not in the Law; it is in our understanding and utilization of the Law. And Satan continually incites us to violate the Law and commit sin by provoking the sin nature that is ingrained in us. It is evident from this that the Law has a limitation in this context, that it can identify sin for us, but it cannot help us to overcome sin; it cannot keep us from sinning, and Paul illustrates this in verses 14–24 with the example of his life and behavior.

The fifth limit of the Law is given in verses 23 and 25; “But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members” (Romans 7:23); “I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin” (Romans 7:25). The Law can work in the mind of man, it can make him identify good and bad. But it is incapable of working on the body, to keep it from committing things they know as sins, in their minds. To know and recognize God’s truth is a work of the mind; but to obey and live out that truth in life is the function of the body. The Law is unable to control the body and lead it on to the right path which the mind already knows and understands. It is a very common and well-known thing, people know that the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other such addictions results in harm to the body. But still, they are unable to control the craving of the body for these harmful things, and therefore keep using them regularly. Everyone knows that for committing theft, cheating, plundering, violence, etc., they will be punished; but they still do these things, and they also suffer punishment. But they are helpless before the desires of the body, and are unable to follow the truth their minds know.

In the coming articles, we'll look at the purpose of the Law, then its demands, and then its utility. But for now, if you're a Christian, and have trusted in your being righteous through observance of some "law" — whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination; or have been trying to prove yourself righteous and acceptable to God through this, i.e., through works of the flesh; then it is time you recognize, understand, and accept the limitations of the Law you are trusting. You need to step out of these vain efforts, and follow the path of repentance and submission given by God. Now, while you have the time and opportunity, make the right decision and leave the vain and fruitless path.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord.
