Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 61 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 47

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 15

Since the previous article have started looking at 2 Corinthians 2:17, to learn how and people and preachers go beyond what is written in God’s Word. We saw in the previous article that the main reason for going beyond God’s Word is selfish gain and gathering material possessions. We also saw the contrast between the ministry of Paul and these “many” false preachers and teachers. While Paul preached in the fear of God, to please God, and the actual Word of God; these “many” false preachers and teachers preached and taught their own doctrines and things, mainly what the audience wanted to hear, and not the actual Word of God.

One can argue that while Paul may have been given one kind of ministry and aspect of God’s Word, these people may have been given a different ministry and a different aspect of God’s Word to preach. Just because they did not follow Paul’s style and content of preaching, does not mean that they were wrong, and not to be followed. God has not left us in any doubt or ambiguity about this; God’s Word shows us its purposes and characteristics, and how it acts when used the way it is meant to be used. The implication is that in whichever preaching and teaching or preacher and teacher these characteristics and purposes mentioned in the Bible are not present, Biblically, that is neither correct, nor to be followed. We can briefly see and understand these characteristics and purposes from three places in the Bible:

·        Paul wrote to Timothy about using God’s Word for its God intended purposes, “for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Of these four God intended purposes for His Word, at least two (reproof and correction), if not three (instruction in righteousness), are purposes that people do not like being applied upon them; and most ministers of God are quite reluctant to exercise them. Even for the remaining purpose, “for doctrine”, God’s Word is often ignored or modified, and decisions of men are taught and implemented as doctrines from God. These are all examples of going beyond God’s Word. If any preacher or preaching does not have these characteristics and purposes, then according to God’s Word, it is not honest and correct either.

·        Paul exhorted Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2-5, endure afflictions and preach God’s Word, even rebuking and exhorting people if it is so required, in fulfilling the ministry. The agents of Satan, engaged in preaching and teaching wrong doctrines will never do this, since their purpose is to keep people away from the correct and honest teachings, and entangled in the wrong and false doctrines.

·        In the New Testament, God’s Word has been likened to being even sharper than a two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), that can penetrate deep within a man and is a “discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” of persons. As the penetrating and cutting of the sword into the body is painful, similarly, when the Word of God is presented with the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, it penetrates into the heart of man and lays open the sinful thoughts and intents of the heart. This pricking of the heart or of the conscience is a painful and exposing process, that is seen only with the right Word being preached correctly, not otherwise.

Now, if someone has to “peddle” the Word of God, they will have to make it sound attractive and pleasing to men, so that the preacher receives a good appreciation, and therefore a good remuneration from the audience. For this, he will have to ‘suitably’ alter the Word of God, so that it no longer serves as a ‘sword’ that cuts deep and lays open the hidden things, nor will he resort to correcting wrongs, rebuking people, and exhort them for following the truth. We will see about this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 60 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 46

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 14

In the previous few articles, we have been seeing from 1 Corinthians 4:6 about how Paul did not go beyond what has been written in God’s Word, and about his strong opposition to any factions coming up in the Church on any grounds, including on grounds of people following elders, or, men instead of following the Lord. Today we will begin to consider a verse from Paul’s second letter to the Church in Corinth, to see an example of how people go beyond what has been written in God’s Word for selfish purposes and worldly gains.

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 2:17 “For we are not, as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.” Paul, here presents a contrast between his ministry and the ministry of “so many” – both, Paul and these “so many”, were preaching from God’s Word, but there was a glaring difference between the preaching of “so many” and Paul’s preaching. We see in the Bible that from the very beginning of the preaching of the gospel and God’s Word, “many” false preachers had also started preaching and teaching wrong things, and misleading the people. Right from the time of the first Church, Satan had sent out many of his agents to subvert the preaching and teaching of God’s Word, and mislead people. Those misled, would continue to believe that they are on the right path, while actually Satan and his angels had deceived them and put them onto the wrong path (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). That is why the Apostle John in his first letter wrote to the Believers not to believe everyone, but to first carefully examine and check their teachings, and believe only if found correct (1 John 4:1-6). Paul also said the same in one sentence, in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 “Test all things; hold fast what is good.”

In our lead verse, 2 Corinthians 2:17, Paul presents a contrast between his ministry and theirs. Paul here states the purpose and characteristic of those preaching wrongly in one word, “peddling”, which means to either sell, or to use inappropriately for gaining profit. So, what these agents of Satan were doing was using the gospel, using God’s Word for selfish purposes, to make an earning out of preaching and teaching it. Like Paul, they too would travel to different places as ministers of God. Whereas, Paul used to labor to establish new Churches, these “many” would go to places where Churches had been established, and there present themselves to the Churches or Christian Believers as preachers and teachers of God’s Word, often with letters of recommendation from the Churches and places they had preached earlier (contrast with 2 Corinthians 3:1-2). Then for a fees, they would preach and teach on their own, things that were pleasing to the audience, instead of sound doctrine from God’s Word (2 Timothy 4:3-4). In contrast, Paul gives the characteristics of his ministry, that he spoke with sincerity, not as a ‘man pleaser’ but from God, as a ‘God pleaser’ (Galatians 1:10-11); speaking “in the sight of God”, i.e., speaking with a sense of accountability to God about whatever he was preaching and teaching.

We will continue considering this verse in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 59 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 45

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 13

In considering the background to Paul’s statement “not to think beyond what is written” in 1 Corinthians 4:6), we had seen in the previous article, the provisions made by God in the Scriptures then available to Paul and Apollos, and also how, through the Holy Spirit, they had also been provided the appropriate message, whenever and wherever God wanted to use them. Today we will look further into the application of this statement from Paul.

In other words, at the time of the Lord’s earthly ministry and the time of the first Church, those who studied the Scriptures, they, from the Old Testament itself, were expected to know about salvation, about entering into God’s Kingdom since all of the Scriptures spoke of the Lord Jesus. And, for His disciples, the Lord Jesus had made adequate provisions, so that they could preach and teach without any want of appropriate God’s Word. For us, Peter affirms this further in 2 Peter 1:3-4, by saying that in the knowledge about the Lord Jesus (which could only be through knowing and learning the Scriptures), God has already given to us – the Christian Believers, everything that pertains to life and godliness, and also, how to become partakers of the divine nature, and the way to escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Hence everything Paul and Apollos required then, whether from the Scriptures or from the Lord, and we need now, to preach the gospel, or the mysteries of God, or anything else from the Word of God, to any kind of audience, through the help and under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit has already been made available to us by God in His Word. At the time of the ministry of Paul and Apollos, this was available to them not only from the Old Testament, but God the Holy Spirit had opened their understanding to the deeper and hidden meanings of the Scriptures; and, the Holy Spirit was also always in them to help them in their ministry. Therefore, Paul was well aware that there was no need for him to go to anything beyond what has been given in the Scriptures for his preaching and teaching related to his ministry. But the Holy Spirit, also had him write it for posterity, that others should learn from him and Apollos that in their ministry, in their handling the Word of God, everyone should follow what Paul has said, “not to think beyond what is written” (1 Corinthians 4:6).

Earlier, when considering 1 Corinthians 1:17, we have also seen, that any addition or mixing of human wisdom and understanding in God’s Word, instead of making the message of the Cross more effective, only renders it vain. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit, through Paul has said, there is no need nor necessity for anyone to look to anything, or in any manner, go beyond God’s Word to teach and explain to anyone, anything, pertaining to life and godliness.

In the subsequent articles, we will see from Paul’s writings, some things that were “beyond what is written”, things that some others were using, but Paul diligently avoided.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 58 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 44

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 12

In learning from Paul about utilizing and handling the Word of God, in the previous article we had started looking at 1 Corinthians 4:6. We had seen in this verse, that using himself and Apollos as examples, Paul states two principles that they followed about God’s Word. The first principle was no to go beyond what is written; and the second was, that no one of the Church was to consider either of them, or any of God’s minister, as better than another, and not follow any man but only the Lord God. We had seen about the second principle first, in the previous article, and today we will be considering the first principle stated in this verse.

In considering the first principle, let us first look at the background of this statement from Paul.

·        Paul, as we know, was a Pharisee, from the family of Pharisees, and had been trained under the renowned teacher of that time, Gamaliel (Acts 22:3; 23:6). Similarly, Apollos too, was well versed in the Scriptures, and an eloquent man (Acts 18:24-25). So, both of them knew the Scriptures, i.e., the Old Testament for us, very well.

·        The Lord Jesus, during His earthly ministry had very clearly said to the Jews, that the Scriptures testified of Him; and Moses wrote about Him (John 5:39, 46).

·        In His conversation with Nicodemus, a leader of the Pharisees, the Lord Jesus categorically states to Nicodemus that without being Born-Again, even he would not even see the Kingdom of God, let alone enter in it (John 3:3, 5). When Nicodemus expressed surprise at this, tried to laugh it away, the Lord very seriously, asked Nicodemus the question, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?” (John 3:10). In other words, as one well versed in the Scriptures, and teaching God’s Word to the people of God, Nicodemus was expected to know what the Lord meant by his having to be Born-Again, and how a person would enter the Kingdom of God.

·        After His resurrection, in the conversation with two of His disciples, on the road to Emmaus, He had expounded to them from all the Scriptures the things concerning Him (Luke 24:27).

·        At the time of His ascension, in His Great Commission to His disciples, the Lord Jesus once again emphatically told them to go into the world and make disciples, and to those new disciples, teach all that He, the Lord, had taught them (Matthew 28:19-20).

·        The Lord had also told His disciples that He will send the Holy Spirit to be with them as helper, and one of the functions of the Holy Spirit will be to remind them of the Words of the Lord Jesus, i.e., what He had taught them (John 14:16, 26).

So, we see that not only Paul and Apollos, but even the other disciples of the Lord, then as well as now, had enough resources available to them to preach and teach whatever God wanted them to, whenever He wanted them to do so. In the next article, we will learn about the application of the above facts to the ministry of Paul, Apollos and the other disciples, then, as well as now.
