The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (5)

We have been studying practical Christian living from Acts 2:42, things that the initial Christian Believers continued doing steadfastly. Because of this they could stand firm and steady in their Christian lives in all circumstances, were edified in their spiritual lives, and the churches continued to grow. There are four things given in Acts 2:42, and we have seen about three of them, and are now considering the fourth one, prayer. So far, we have seen that praying is not just asking for something from God, or asking God to do something. Rather, it is conversing with God, sharing about everything with Him, and receiving guidance, instructions, and help from Him. We have also seen that God wants His people to always remain in an attitude of prayer with Him for everything. And then, we saw why God wants this, and have also seen and understood about the benefits, the security, a Christian Believer receives on doing this. Today, we will move ahead on this topic and see some more things related to being in an attitude of prayer before God.

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul has written “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). In other words, by remaining in prayer before God for everything keeps our hearts and minds in peace and security from God. In the previous articles we have seen that when we continually remain in prayer, or conversation with God, then how it prevents Satan from placing anything wrong in us, and also prepares us, makes us keep our hearts pure and clean. Now, here we see that remaining in an attitude of prayer, being in fellowship with God, is the source for a wonderful divine peace for our lives, that will not let us become perturbed in any circumstance, and will also keep us safe and secure from being misled by Satan.

To pray is also to serve God. It is written in Luke 2:36-37 “Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” Most Bible translations have translated the original Greek word as “serve,” but some have also translated it as “worship.” In other words, according to the Word of God, fasting and praying is also a way of serving God, or worshiping God. We all know from our own experiences that some of God’s people have the gift of praying for others, and we have an indication about this in the Bible, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:13-16). Here, along with the various effects of prayer, at the end, in verse 16 is written “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” These various effects of prayer place before us the various types of worship and serving of God.

Not to pray, is to sin against God. Israel insisted on getting what they wanted, i.e., have a human king to lead them, instead of being led by God. God’s prophet Samuel was very hurt by this, but God consoled him, and asked him to anoint Saul as the King of Israel - see 1 Samuel chapter 12. On hearing Samuel’s warnings for what they had done, the people of Israel wanted Samuel to pray for them to God to save their lives (1 Samuel 12:19). Then, Samuel said to them that though they had done wrong (verse 20), assured them that neither will God forsake them, nor will he himself stop praying for them (verses 22, 23). Here, pay attention to verse 23 “Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way.” Although the people of Israel had acted wrongly, had gone against God, yet God’s prophet Samuel understood that to stop praying for them, would be sinning against God. Samuel also told those mistaken Israelites what he would be praying for about them “but I will teach you the good and the right way.” When despite their derogatory behavior towards Him, God did not forsake them, then how could God’s prophet forsake them? This puts before us a very serious and important lesson - to keep praying for God's people, even when we do not agree with them, with their behavior, with what they have to say. We must not join with them in what they say and do contrary to God, but like Samuel, we should continue to pray for God to show to them the good and right way.

Today we have seen three important things related to prayer - prayer is the source of God’s peace; it is to serve and worship God; and not praying is to sin against God. In the next article we will see ahead from here.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Things Related to Christian Living – 62

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (4)

In this study on practical Christian living, we are considering the fourth of the four things given in Acts 2:42, i.e., praying. In the previous article we had seen a reason why God wants His people to always be in an attitude of prayer, i.e., conversing with Him. We had understood how this God given instruction is for our good, to keep us safe from the ploys and devices of Satan. Today we will look further on the same topic - continually being in an attitude of prayer, and consider another of its aspects, that often perplexes the Christian Believers. But again, God has asked it to be done for our benefit only.

We know that one of the attributes of God is His being omniscient, i.e., knowing everything about everything. He knows the end of everything from its beginning (Isaiah 45:21; 46:10). There is nothing hidden from Him; He not only knows everything that is in man’s heart, but also knows and understands the intention behind those thoughts (1 Chronicles 28:9). Now, when God is omniscient, when He already knows everything beforehand, then why does He want that people should pray to Him, express their needs and desires before Him? He already knows everything about us; therefore, He should keep providing for us according to His foreknowledge. There is nothing wrong in saying this, and it is not that God does not act according to this rationalization. God said to the Israelites taken into captivity, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11); and by making it a part of His unalterable eternal Word, has made this assurance applicable for others as well.

But God desires that His people should come in His presence, and share whatever is in their hearts with Him, so that we should evaluate the prayers and conversations we address to Him, and remain safe from the schemes of Satan. We all know very well, and it is our personal experience as well, that we have many kinds of thoughts in our hearts about many people, many officials or dignitaries or VIPs. In our general conversation, we may say many things about them, or in their context, but it is not necessary that everything we say or think is correct, appropriate, and worthy of being openly said in the presence of that person. Whenever we are brought into the presence of that superior ranking person, then we are very careful about what we say, and say it in a very controlled manner. Moreover, if we know that there is something that he does not like, or if there is something that can belittle his dignity, can insult him, then we are very careful that we do not speak of that thing to him or in his presence, or do it. In other words, the presence of that person makes us evaluate what we are saying, analyze how we will express ourselves, and induces us to exercise restraint and moderation in our conversing with him, expressing ourselves before him, in our expressions and behavior before him. At such times, our effort and aim are to observe proper decorum and manners, and accord that person his due honor according to his status. Whatever we may be having in our hearts about him, we only say and behave in a manner that is appropriate and courteous in context of his stature and dignity. Therefore, coming into the presence of such an official to say something to him, induces us to evaluate our thoughts, our desires, our words, our expressions, our behavior, and then speak or do only the thing that is correct and appropriate. Now, what if the person in whose presence we have come to express ourselves, has the ability to automatically know everything that we have in our hearts, minds, and thoughts; has the ability to know and understand everything in us, without our uttering even a word; what would our condition be in such a situation? And then, if we have to come into his presence, and have to converse with him many times every day, then what kind of thoughts and things would we allow to come into us about him; and what all things would we stay away from?

Now, apply this very thing to yourself and God, and ponder over it. Since you have to say everything in your heart to Him, therefore you will evaluate yourself, your thoughts, your desires, your feelings, your behavior, and come into His presence reverentially, and say only that which is in accordance with His dignity and honor; also, you will only ask for that from Him, which is according to His will and desire, and not anything that He does not like and does not want to see in His people. And when you know that God already knows everything about you, about your thoughts, about your likes and desires; then automatically, you will take appropriate steps to ensure that you do not allow anything that He does not like to come into you, nor will you ask for anything that He does want to be seen in or with you. Take this a step further, now, when you know that you have to come in the presence of God many times, and converse with Him, then will you let anything within you that God does not like or want in you? If we begin to control and direct our lives, our thoughts, feelings, likes and desires, behavior to be in conformity with the will and desire of God for us, then think how pure and clean our hearts, minds, and thoughts will become; how much better our spiritual lives, spiritual status, and our intimacy with God will be. By this we can understand that though He is omniscient, why God wants that we keep coming into His presence over and over again to pray and converse with Him; because He wants us to be people of a pure and clean heart, mind and thoughts; and does not want that Satan should have any opportunity to place anything bad within us.

Truly, as God has said in Jeremiah 29:11, His every plan is only for our benefit; we should understand this and become those who obey all of God given instructions. In the next article, we will consider further from this point.

Things Related to Christian Living – 61

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (3)

In the last article we have seen about the fourth pillar of practical Christian living, given in Acts 2:42, i.e., prayer. We saw that it is the teaching of God’s Word the Bible that God’s people remain continually in an attitude of praying to Him, i.e., always be conversing with Him. This attitude of continually being in prayer is an attitude of the mind or the heart, and not a particular physical posture. We also saw from the life of Nehemiah that even in public places, in sudden and unexpected circumstances, prayer can quietly be said within the heart, and yet be very effective. Today we will see why it is that God wants that His people should always, for all things for all their desires, their needs, their feelings, etc., should always be in prayer or conversation with Him.

To understand this, let us go to the Garden of Eden, and ponder over the happenings at the time of the first sin, i.e., of disobedience there. We have this incidence given in Genesis 3:1-6. Very briefly, Satan planted the idea in Eve’s mind that God had held back something very important from them; and told her that if she does what he says and eats the forbidden fruit, not only will she get what God has held back, but will also become like God. Eve heard what Satan was saying, heard what her heart and mind were saying, then accepted Satan’s suggestion and her desire, disobeyed God, and ate the forbidden fruit - opened the way for sin to enter into creation. It is a matter of very simple common-sense, that what Satan had asked her to do, was not in an emergency situation, was not something that had to be done immediately or in a hurry. It could just as well have been done after sometime. Eve could have discussed it with Adam, and they could have thought over it, and decided whether or not to do it. Moreover, they knew that God used to come meet them, converse with them. So, they could have also waited for Him to come, and then talk things over with Him, understand about it, and then decide what to do. But they did not do this. They did not give any importance to talking about or discussing the matter, neither amongst themselves, nor with God; and ended up committing sin. This irreversible situation and harm that could have been avoided by simply talking and discussing things amongst themselves and with God, got done because of not conversing about it.

The same thing is equally true and applicable for us today. Understand this through an example of something very common for us. Today nearly all of us use a phone to contact and converse with others. If we want to talk to someone through the phone, and that person is already on another conversation with his phone, then we are unable to connect to his phone and talk with him; we keep getting a busy signal. This situation remains till he or we connect with each other through our phones. Now, apply this very situation to our present topic. If we are continually in touch and in conversation with God about everything, then Satan will always keep getting a busy signal, and will never have the opportunity to converse with us, to plant any suggestions, and place any wrong or inappropriate thoughts in our minds. There is another related thing as well, something that Adam and Eve did not do. If Satan realizes that the person will never do anything without first asking God about it, asking for its permission, and getting guidance from Him, and then do everything only according to God’s will, then what and how much harm can Satan do in our lives? In such a scenario, can he ever deceive us into disobeying God and committing sin?

This is why God wants that we too, like those initial Christian Believers, should always steadfastly be conversing with Him - be in an attitude or prayer with Him. Praying should not be an obligation, a formality for us to fulfill; rather, it should be an integral, inseparable part of our life and behavior, our thinking, our desires. Thereby we will remain safe and secure with God and be blessed always. In the next article we will see that when God knows everything about us, and about our needs, then why is it that we need to bring those things before Him and pray about them to Him?

Things Related to Christian Living – 60

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (2)

We are looking into the fourth thing given in Acts 2:42 regarding the practical Christian living, i.e., praying. We had seen in the previous article that praying is not just asking something from God, or asking Him to do something. Rather, it is having an open-hearted conversation with God about everything. Moreover, prayer is not a one-sided conversation, a monologue with God. In other words, it is not telling God about our demands, desires, necessities, feelings etc.; but it is also listening to what God has to say, His response, His guidance, and His will. The Lord Jesus said in John chapter 10 that His sheep hear and understand His voice. Therefore, to be able to listen to God, not only will we have to become His sheep, but also become sensitive to His voice. We had ended the last article by saying that God wants that we should continually be in prayer, i.e., in conversation with Him. Today we will see ahead from here.

The Lord wants His people to always be in prayer with Him about everything. In this context consider three verses from the Bible:

  • Luke 21:36 - “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man."

  • Ephesians 6:18 - “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints”

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - “pray without ceasing”

The more we stay in conversation with God, i.e., in prayer, the nearer we will remain to Him, and the more blessed our lives will be. This does not mean that the Christian Believers have to always be on their knees, with folded hands and closed eyes in the praying posture. But the meaning is that the Christian Believers should always be in an attitude of conversing with God about all things or in a mentality of praying to God for all things. In other words, at all times, for all things keep conversing with God, ask God for His will before taking any decision, always keep placing every situation into God’s hands.

An excellent example of a silent prayer is Nehemiah’s prayer before the King; see Nehemiah chapters 1 and 2. Nehemiah was very saddened on learning the plight of Jerusalem, and he wanted to do something about it. He was praying that God would humble the King, whose cup-bearer Nehemiah was (Nehemiah 1:11). The King asked Nehemiah the reason for the sad expression on his face; Nehemiah was dreadfully afraid, but told the King about the plight of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:2-3). On listening to what Nehemiah had to say, the King suddenly and quite unexpectedly asked Nehemiah what he wanted done? Nehemiah, surprised by the unexpected turn of events, prayed to God silently in his heart, and by the wisdom given to him by God, gave the answer to the King (Nehemiah 2:4). The King agreed to Nehemiah’s request, made him in-charge of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, sanctioned all the requirements and necessities for rebuilding the wall, and sent him to Jerusalem. Nehemiah had to face many problems, oppositions, and difficulties, but he rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem in record time (Nehemiah 6:15). For this accomplishment, he was made the Governor of Judah, and his name and feat were honorably recorded in God's Word forever. This is an excellent example of continually praying to God, i.e., continually conversing with Him for everything, asking His guidance, and the resulting accomplishments because of this attitude.

But why does God want that we should be continually in prayer i.e., conversation with Him? We will look at this in the next article.
