The Holy Communion – 107

English Translation

Responsibility Because of Participation (1)

For the past few articles, we have been considering some matters related to participation in the Lord’s Table, and are now looking about this from 1 Corinthians 10:16-22. We have seen from this passage that not only does God expect that the participants in His Holy Communion will live their life and behave differently than the people of the world; but God’s Word informs that doing this is mandatory for them. This passage shows that for those who partake of the Lord’s Table, doing so has two implications, and one responsibility. The implications are that the participant lives a life of continual communion or close fellowship with the Lord, and of unity with the other participants; and one responsibility is that the participant lives a life of separation from the world. We have considered both the implications in the previous articles, and noted that through participation in the Holy Communion, the participants affirm and renew their commitment of remaining in, and living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus, and of living in unity with the other Believers. The responsibility of living a life of separation from the world is of great importance for the Christian Believer, and not fulfilling it has grave consequences. But just as the implications are hardly, if ever, told and taught to the congregation, similarly emphasizing the responsibility and its fulfilment too are usually neglected. The main reason is because most Christians, even Believers, take the Lord’s Table like a ritual, and are either unaware or are not serious about what participating in it means and implies for the participant.

Before we proceed further, a request – please read 1 Corinthians chapter 8 here, for a better understanding. The historical background of things given here in this chapter is that the animals sacrificed to idols were made available for consumption by the public, and the public ate them as an act of reverence towards the deity, thereby indirectly not only acknowledging the deity’s existence, but were also accepting the reality of whatever powers were believed to be associated with that deity. But unlike the idolaters, the Christian Believers were taking and eating that meat, neither in reverence to the deity, nor as an acknowledgment of its supposed powers, but merely as a food item. But this was causing some problems for the new Believers. These new Believers assumed that eating that meat of the sacrifice, implied that the senior Believers were giving some recognition and importance to the Pagan deities, and thus the new Believers were unknowingly, indirectly falling into the trap of polytheism and idol worship, by honoring both, the Lord Jesus as well as the Pagan deities. Therefore, Paul concludes chapter 8 with the declaration that “Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble” (1 Corinthians 8:13). In 1 Corinthians 10:19-20, Paul, through the Holy Spirit, states the responsibility of the Christian Believer, of staying separate from the world and its ways of worship, by explaining the implications of their partaking in things sacrificed to idols. God had already forbidden His people, the Israelites, to not fall for this tendency of worshiping like the Gentiles worship their deities, much earlier (Deuteronomy 12:1-4, 29-32).

In explaining and instructing in this manner, Paul here brings up another very important aspect of eating the food items that had been sacrificed to idols and non-Christian deities. Probably those Christian Believers were still not aware of this point, or had not considered it seriously enough. Paul, using rhetorical questions, starts with a clarification in verse 19, negating any possible misconceptions the Believers may have about the importance of an idol or anything sacrificed to it having any bearing on their lives. Then, he comes to his main point, the deities physically represented by those idols, are demons, not God. Therefore, the sacrifices made to those deities are made not to God but to demons. Drawing upon his earlier statement of verse 18, he explains his point, that just as the partakers of Israel’s sacrifices are also automatically partakers of the altar of God; similarly, the partakers of these sacrifices to the idols, i.e., to demons, automatically bring themselves into fellowship with demons. And Paul, as their mentor, their spiritual guide, does not want them to get into this unholy alliance, even inadvertently. They, the Christian Believers, have to keep themselves away from anything tainted by any demonic worship or influence. Since Paul is writing this letter under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, therefore, Paul’s not wanting the Christian Believers to do a thing means that actually God does not want them to do it.

We will consider this, and its implications, further in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so – the decision is yours.

The Holy Communion – 106

English Translation

Implications of Participation (4)

In the previous article we had begun to consider the second of the two implications of participating in the Holy Communion, given in 1 Corinthians 10:17, i.e., living in unity. We had seen how this has been stated in various ways, and has been exemplified by the seemingly impossible act of Jews and Gentiles being united as one body of the Lord, through faith in the Lord Jesus. Maintaining this unity in the Church is not an option, but is something that has been made compulsory by the Lord for everyone who claims to be His Believer. The participation in the Holy Communion is an affirmation of this committent by the Believer, cannot be taken lightly, and he will be held accountable for it. Today we will consider this further.

In the New Testament, this unity of the Christian Believers has always been strongly emphasized upon, and considered to be of paramount importance, because in this unity is the strength, power, and capability of the Church (Matthew 18:19-20). Therefore, Satan always tries to disrupt this unity, one way or another; and has largely been successful in this by dividing the Church into denominations, sects, and groups through obeying and following man-made things, instead of obeying and following God’s Word. But the Lord Jesus, through the Holy Communion has made it imperative for the Believers to live in unity. Instead of looking for ways and excuses of separating and segregating ourselves from each other, of working to keep our mutual barriers intact, of letting Satan divide us even further through petty ego issues. As Believers in the Lord Jesus, it is our responsibility, that we strive for and maintain this unity; for eventually we will be accountable to the Lord for not maintaining it. The Church today is sorely in need of the peacemakers (Matthew 5:9), so it can stand up to the wiles of the devil and demonstrate a life victorious over the satanic forces.

Just as through the Holy Communion, the participants affirm and renew their commitment to being in close fellowship with the Lord and living accordingly; similarly, while participating in the Holy Communion they also affirm and renew their commitment of living in unity with the other members of the body of Christ – His Church. It is the urgent need of the hour that we be true to this commitment, to be able to stand firm in our Faith and true to our witness in these end times.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Holy Communion – 105

English Translation

Implications of Participation (3)

In the previous articles we have seen that participating in the Lord’s Table is not a ritual that can be indulged in according to rules or traditions of any denomination, sect, or group. In the last article, from 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 we have seen that God’s Word prescribes, and God expects that the participants in His Holy Communion will live a life and behave differently than the people of the world; doing this is mandatory for them. From this passage we had seen two implications that for those who partake of the Lord’s Table, i.e., – living a life of communion or fellowship with the Lord, and unity amongst the participants; and one responsibility i.e., of living a life of separation from the world, are stated here. We had then seen further that through participation in the Holy Communion, the participants affirm and renew their commitment of being, and living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus. We had considered the first implication in the previous articles; today we will look at the second implication.

The second implication of participating in the Lord’s Holy Communion is that the participants have to live in unity, as it says in 1 Corinthians 10:17. In verse 16 too, through the use of singular ‘cup’ and singular ‘bread’, the same thing was shown, and is stated more clearly in verse 17. When we study the institution of the Lord’s Table by the Lord Jesus as given in the Gospel accounts, there too, the Lord took one bread and gave it to His disciples, for all of them to eat from that one bread; and similarly, He took one cup, and asked the disciples to drink from that one cup. The Lord’s implication of doing this, of using one bread and one cup, is stated in verse 17 here, “For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.” The one bread represents the one body of the Lord Jesus, by partaking in that one bread, the partakers denote their unity, their being joined together through the Lord Jesus, now as one body of the Lord Himself. This is then further explained in verse 18 through the use of an Old Testament act of worship, as an example. Those who ate of the sacrifices made on the altar, were thereby united not only with the altar, but even amongst themselves – note the use of singular Israel at the beginning of this verse, instead of using a term like “the Israelites”, or “the Jews”, or some other plural expression.

The Born-Again Christian Believers are said to be the body and bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:23-27) and not ‘bodies and brides.’ It was unimaginable for the Jews to even communicate with the Gentiles (Acts 10:28), let alone ever be united with them. But in Ephesians 2:11-22, Paul, through the Holy Spirit explains, emphasizes, and exhorts for this very unity between the Jewish and Gentile Believers, effected through the Lord Jesus. The Church started off with this understanding of unity (Acts 2:44-47). Paul, in this letter of 1 Corinthians, starts of by exhorting the Corinthian Church members to stop their divisive tendencies and remain united (1 Corinthians 1:10-13); and then in the section on correcting their errors and misunderstandings about the holy Communion (1 Corinthians 11:17-34), he starts off the discourse by re-emphasizing maintaining this unity (11:17-19).

In the next article we will continue to consider this further.

The Holy Communion – 104

English Translation

Implications of Participation (2)

In the previous article we had begun considering the question that can a Christian Believer live his own life, or, does participating in the Holy Communion place some responsibilities on him. To answer this question, we had taken 1 Corinthians 10:16-22, and started considering it. We saw from verse 16 that it is clearly written there that on partaking of the Lord’s Table, the Christian Believer comes into the fellowship of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus, which places upon him the responsibility that his life and behavior must not provide anyone any opportunity to disrespect the Lord God, to point fingers at Him in a demeaning manner. Today, we will consider this thing a bit further, look at some other things given in this passage.

This privilege of such close fellowship with the Lord God, by itself requires a certain decency and responsibility. For this reason, Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:15,17 “15: and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” and “17: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” In other words, those who have become people of the Lord Jesus are expected to no longer live for themselves but for the Lord, knowing that the Lord has made them into a new creation; they are not to revert to their old life and behavior. The participant in the Holy Communion, renews and affirms his commitment to live in accordance with this privilege that has been granted to Him, every time he participates. As he remembers the Lord “and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."” (1 Corinthians 11:24-25), he is also to remember that he is now in fellowship with the Lord God, and has to always demonstrate this through his life. While a ritualistic, non-committal participation will never make the participants realize this implication; those who realize what is expected of them and participate worthily, will also strive to live a life that honors the privilege granted by the Lord to them.

We will consider the other verses in 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 in the upcoming articles ahead.

The Holy Communion – 103

English Translation

Implications of Participation (1)

In the past few articles, we have been considering some questions related to the Holy Communion about which there are confusions among God’s people. The confusions, and even the questions themselves, are because of the tendency of twisting God’s Word to make it fit into different denominational teachings and interpretations, rather than correct those teachings and interpretations and bring them in line with God’s Word. We have seen from God’s Word the Bible, that when those issues and questions are seen directly from God’s Word, without any denominational considerations, the answers are straightforward and clear. It has also been repeatedly emphasized in these articles that participation in the Lord’s Table is not a ritual, and is not to be done as fulfilling a formality. This is further affirmed by the answer to our today’s question - Can a Christian Believer live his own life; or, does the Holy Communion place some responsibility on him about his life and behavior?

For the answer, let us turn to 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 from God’s Word the Bible. In this part of God’s Word, Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is pointing out some things related to the Lord’s Table that are very important and fundamental. But unfortunately, these aspects are hardly ever, if at all, stated, emphasized, or taught about in the Churches, even in the gatherings of the Born-Again Christian Believers. Paul also points out that what he is saying are not some new teachings or doctrines, but ones that are seen even in the Old Testament worship. Here, in this section, Paul is talking about two fundamental and important things - firstly, the implications of the partaking, and secondly, the responsibility that the participant has; and we will be considering them in this and subsequent articles. There are two implications stated here - living a life of communion or fellowship with the Lord, and unity amongst the participants; and the responsibility of the Believer is to live a life of separation from the world.

In 1 Corinthians 10:16 it is clearly stated that by partaking of the cup and bread of the Holy Communion, the partaker is coming into communion or fellowship with the blood and body of Christ, i.e., joins himself to them. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe, gives to the Christian Believers the privilege of fellowshipping with Him, communing with Him; a privilege He has not given to even His obedient angels. Therefore, it is binding upon the participant that he should not be living and behaving in any such manner that will spoil the reputation of the Lord and cause others to cast aspersions upon Him through the Believer’s life and living. Through participation in the Holy Communion the participants affirm their being in, and, also living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus, as the Lord Jesus had said in His prayer, in John 17:21-23, before being caught for crucifixion.

In the coming articles we will consider this further with the help of some other Bible verses.

Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Holy Communion – 102

English Translation

How Soon After Coming To Faith? (3)

We had seen in the last article that there is no instruction or example in the Bible of the Christian Believers to be kept from being baptized or from partaking of the Lord’s Table after coming to faith. Doing this is according to man-made, contrived rules, which have been given more importance than the Word of God, and have been imposed upon people. Generally, it is because of these contrived traditions that the new Believers are not immediately baptized; to affirm their faith they are kept under observation for some time. Once their faith is confirmed, they are then given baptism. A modified form of this is seen in the denominational Churches, where participation in the Holy Communion is permitted only after the youth have received their “Confirmation.” Without receiving this “Confirmation” the youth is neither permitted, nor administered the Holy Communion. Using Acts 2:41-42 as a basis, it is argued that only those who had been baptized, took part in the Lord’s Table. Today, we will see the validity of this argument from the Bible.

Those who use this sequence of recording of events fail to note that nowhere else in the Bible has baptism ever been in any manner mentioned along with the Breaking of Bread, i.e., participating in the Holy Communion. Nowhere was it ever stated by anyone to any of the new Believers that having been baptized, they can now partake of the Lord’s Table. Neither was any Christian Believer ever questioned why he took part in the Table without having been baptized; nor was anyone questioned why they did not participate, although they had been baptized. Even in passages such as Romans 6:3-5, Ephesians 4:4-6, and Hebrews 6:1-2, which are often used to teach about baptism, no association between baptism and Holy Communion has been given.

Moreover, if the sequence of mentioning various related events in Acts 2:41-42, so very important that a doctrinal stand can be built upon it, then it should be equally relevant for the other things mentioned there as well. Therefore, in that case, until a Christian Believer is baptized, he should not be permitted to participate in Bible studies, in gathering for fellowship with other Believers, and saying prayers either, since all of them are mentioned after baptism. Why then, even in those Churches and Assemblies which impose the association of baptism with participation in the Lord’s Table, are the new Believers encouraged to pray, study the Bible and come for fellowship, while they wait to be baptized and be allowed to take the Holy Communion? By doing this are they not contradicting their own logic and their contrived doctrinal stand?

The basic fact of the matter is that baptism and the Four Pillars of Christian Faith are all meant to be an integral part of a Born-Again Christian Believer’s life. As it says in Acts 2:42, the Christian Believers are to “continue steadfastly,” unceasingly and diligently in them. The Church elders and religious leaders are to preach and teach God’s Word, but they have not been given the authority or responsibility of changing God’s Word, or substituting it with their own fanciful logic and modifications. The Bible is very clear, if a person has repented of sins, accepted Jesus as his Lord and savior, asked for and received the forgiveness of sins from the Lord, then he is a child of God, is a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus, is a disciple of the Lord Jesus; and as an expression of his Faith in the Lord Jesus, he has the right to participate in the Holy Communion.

Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
