The Law and the Christian Life - 16

Why can't the Law save us? (11)

 Purpose of the Law

In previous articles, we've seen the limitations of the Law from Romans 7 that the Law can only help man to recognize sin, and it can hold man guilty of sin. The law can also prescribe punishment for that sin and offense, but it cannot prevent man from committing sin. Nor can it restore the sinner to fellowship with God even after he has been punished. Also, we have seen that because the Law has been taken away from us by God through the Lord Jesus, therefore, the Christian Believers have no need to go into observing the things of the Law. Rather, their still insisting to do so is not only disobedience to God, but by trying to reinstate what was taken away by God, is also demeaning and insulting Him. Despite the many limitations and inabilities of the Law, why did God give His Law to men, to His chosen people? God does not do anything in vain, He has a plan, a purpose in everything. So, what is the plan and what is the purpose in the giving of the Law? Today we will see and understand the answer to this question.

In an earlier article of this series, we took a very brief look at human history, and came to the conclusion that whether man seeks to be righteous and holy through his wisdom, his efforts, his actions, or through the Laws given by God, by the observance of statutes, sacrifices, etc., the result is the same—man never becomes righteous, holy, and perfect, “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God" (Romans 3:19). Even though the Law of God is in the hands of man,  he is still unable to obey it. Ultimately, every human being becomes acceptable to God only through repentance of sins, and through God's grace and forgiveness. That is the first purpose of the Law - to make man aware of the limits of his abilities because of the sin in him, and to keep him conscious of those limits. The author of Hebrews expressed this in these words, "For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.” Verse 11 “And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” (Hebrews 10:1-3, 11).

The second purpose of the Law, as we saw in the previous article in the context of the fourth limitation of the Law from Romans 7:7-13, is to identify sin. The law is not given for the solution or remission of sins, but for the recognition of sins, and to remind man of his sinful condition, “Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.” (Romans 7:13). Even before this, in Romans itself, God, the Holy Spirit, through Paul, has made the point evident and clear. It is written, "20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;” (Romans 3:20-22). Consider these three verses a little carefully:

  • In verse 20, the Holy Spirit had it written that keeping the Law will not justify any living being. Because the purpose of the Law is not to justify, but to provide recognition of sin. The Law puts before man the criteria of God, and the standards of His righteousness. Man, by placing anything for comparison before them, can identify what is acceptable to God, and what is not; what is right in his view and what is not; whom He believes to be right and just, whom not. To understand it, look at it like this: the doctor diagnoses the disease by the help of blood tests, X-rays, and other such tests, and then tells the solution, the treatment of that disease. The tests being asked by him are not the cure of the disease, they are not the treatment of the disease; but only the way to diagnose the disease. In the same way God's Law is also a way of revealing man's sin-sickness to him, making him recognize its presence in him, and showing the futility of his own efforts to cure that disease. The Law is not the cure or solution to the disease of sin.

  • In verse 21, the Holy Spirit explains that the righteousness of God is apart from the Law, not by the Law. This righteousness of God is revealed, outside the Law; And the Law and the prophets themselves testify to this righteousness. This righteousness of God is not through the works of man, but it is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Romans 1:17; Jeremiah 23:5-6; 33:16).

  • Verse 22 makes it quite clear that this righteousness of God, which is apart from the Law, can in no way ever be earned, or inherited, by anyone, but is graciously given only to those who believe in the Lord; It is only for them.

Also, for those who still want to justify themselves in the sight of God through the observance of the Law, the Law has a great demand too, which no man has ever been able to fulfill. We will consider this requirement of the Law in the next article. But for now, if you are a Christian, and consider yourself to be righteous by observing any kind of “law” — whether of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God through your works; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you can become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the Law, but by only following God's prescribed path of repentance and submission. Therefore, while you have the time and opportunity, make the right decision now, and leave the useless and fruitless path.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. By asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily submit yourself sincerely and with a committed heart to his Lordship in your life - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You have to say only a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ, willingly and meaningfully, while simultaneously completely committing your life to Him. You can say this prayer of repentance and submission in a manner something like this, “Lord Jesus, I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself for their forgiveness and because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, you rose again on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God. Please forgive my sins, take me under your shelter, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and submissive heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Law and the Christian Life - 15

Why can't the law save us? (10)

 Limitations of the Law (2)

Considering the question of why the law cannot save us, in the previous article, we began to look at the limits of the Law from Romans 7. We saw and understood two limitations of the Law from Romans 7:1, 5. The first was from verse 1 that the law asserts dominion. There is no kindness, compassion, understanding of the person's situation, etc., in the Law, it can only convict and give the punishment. The second limitation, from verse 5 was that desires arise in the flesh because of the Law, and Satan exploits them, by causing people to fulfill those desires gets them to fall into sin. Today we'll look at some more limitations of the Law from Romans 7; things that render it incapable of providing salvation.

A third and very important limitation is given in Romans 7:6, where it is written, "But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter" (Romans 7:6). The disciples of the Lord Jesus, those who believe in Him and surrendered themselves to Him, i.e., Christians, have been redeemed from observing the Law. Now the Law no longer applies to them, nor is it effective for them. They have now been set free from obeying the Law, from being righteous before God and being accepted by God through the Law. In Romans itself, Paul further writes, "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes" (Romans 10:4). On the same topic, under the guidance of God's Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote to the Christian congregation in Colossae about the work done by the Lord Jesus Christ for our salvation, and said, "And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:13-15). So then, how can we be righteous and acceptable to God through obeying that, which God has fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ, and has taken away from us? Therefore, all efforts to be saved by obeying the Law are vain, and are doomed to failure.

The fourth limit of the Law is written in Romans 7:13, but it is necessary to look at it in its context in verses 7-13. In verse 7 the Holy Spirit has written that the Law is not sin, rather it identifies sin — it is a standard to measure, to identify what is right and acceptable in the eyes of God, and what is not. Then verses 8–11 explain how desires arise from the recognition of sin, and by falling for fulfilling those desires we fall into sin, which we saw in the previous article in the context of 7:5. Then in verse 12 the Holy Spirit writes down three more qualities of the Law, that it is holy, just, and good. Then Paul writes in verse 13, "Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful” (Romans 7:13). That is to say that the deficiency is not in the Law; it is in our understanding and utilization of the Law. And Satan continually incites us to violate the Law and commit sin by provoking the sin nature that is ingrained in us. It is evident from this that the Law has a limitation in this context, that it can identify sin for us, but it cannot help us to overcome sin; it cannot keep us from sinning, and Paul illustrates this in verses 14–24 with the example of his life and behavior.

The fifth limit of the Law is given in verses 23 and 25; “But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members” (Romans 7:23); “I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin” (Romans 7:25). The Law can work in the mind of man, it can make him identify good and bad. But it is incapable of working on the body, to keep it from committing things they know as sins, in their minds. To know and recognize God’s truth is a work of the mind; but to obey and live out that truth in life is the function of the body. The Law is unable to control the body and lead it on to the right path which the mind already knows and understands. It is a very common and well-known thing, people know that the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other such addictions results in harm to the body. But still, they are unable to control the craving of the body for them, and keep using them regularly. Everyone knows that for committing theft, cheating, plundering, violence, etc., they will be punished; but they still do these things, and they also suffer punishment. But they are helpless before the desires of the body, and are unable to follow the truth their minds know.

In the next article, we'll look at the purpose of the Law, and its demands, then its utility. But for now, if you're a Christian, and have trusted in your being righteous through observance of some "law"—whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or religion; or have been trying to prove yourself righteous and acceptable to God through this, i.e., through works of the flesh; then it is time you recognize the limitations of the Law you are trusting, and you need to step out of these vain efforts, and follow the path of repentance and submission given by God. Now, while you have the time and opportunity, make the right decision and leave the vain and fruitless path.

The Law and the Christian Life - 14

Why can't the Law save us? (9)

 Limitations of the Law (1)

In the previous article we saw and understood why God, according to Acts 17:30, refuses to immediately punish men for their sins, and is willing to consider those sins as things done in times of ignorance. We have also seen that whether a believer or an unbeliever, whether one believes in the Lord or not, God's standards and ways for the remission of sins remain the same - that men repent of their sins, confess them, and ask for the Lord God to forgive them, accept the Lord as their Savior, and submit to Him. We also saw another very important thing, God didn't ask anyone to obey the Law in order to resolve the problem of their sins; Nor did Satan, who keeps blaming the Lord's people day and night, ever accuse them of not keeping the Law. This implies that keeping the Law has no role in the remission of sins.

We now have this perplexing question before us that when the observance of the Law has no role in the solution of sins and being made acceptable to God, then why did God give that Law, why did He ask for its observance, and why has He given so much importance to it? From today we will start considering these questions. To understand these things, we have to understand and keep in mind that the Law has some limitations, the Law has some demands, and the Law has a purpose. From today, we will first consider and understand what is written about the limitations of the Law in Romans 7 by the apostle Paul through God's Holy Spirit.

The first limitation that comes before us about the Law from Romans 7 is in the first verse itself - "Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?" (Romans 7:1). The law rules - commands, demands and compels that the prescribed things be done, declares guilty or transgressor for not obeying, and enforces the punishment after declaring the person to be guilty. But there is no place in the Law for mercy, compassion, consideration of an individual's circumstances and compulsions etc. and then to determine the individual's guilt and punishment accordingly. On the contrary, as we have seen from Acts 17:30 in the preceding articles, God, understanding and considering man's circumstances and weaknesses, is willing to consider the sins to be acts of ignorance, remains reluctant to punish them, gives sinners ample opportunity to avoid punishment, and has provided His solutions to man’s problem of sins. Similarly, we see that the Lord Jesus always showed mercy, compassion, and patience toward sinners. While according to the law, the accusers, regardless of anything else, demanded immediate merciless punishment. If punishment is given only according to the guilt, regardless of the various circumstances and factors involved in the commission of the sin, will that justice be deemed to be true and just? In the Lord Jesus Christ, God treats us with due consideration of our creation, one’s personal limitations, and prevailing circumstances, etc., none of which are possible in the Law.

In Romans 7:5 we see a second limitation of the Law, "For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death" (Romans 7: 5). The Law arouses in man desires to sin; how ironic, that the desire to sin arises out of that which is given because of sin! Please understand, the Law does not cause a person to sin, it arouses the desires for things related to sin. Even then, man still has the opportunity to suppress that desire, turn away from it, move away from that place. Having a desire is not sin in itself, but it certainly is the threshold of the door to falling into sin - if you cross the threshold, you definitely will fall into sin (James 1:14-15). As soon as a spark of an unreasonable desire arises in man’s mind, Satan immediately fans it and turns it into destructive flames of sin. Satan incites man into inappropriate behavior related to those desires. And if a person does not consciously back away from the situation, by remembering and recalling God's Word and commandments, does not resist Satan’s words, then Satan by continually inciting or seducing him, causes him to sin.

The same thing happened with the first sin in the world committed by Adam and Eve. God had given them a 'Law' of a single commandment - to eat the fruit of all the other trees but not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-17). This 'Law', this one commandment, aroused desires in Eve's heart, and she was found near the forbidden tree and its fruit, admiring them. Satan saw a spark of inappropriate desire, and aroused in Eve the temptation to get something better, and a suspicion that God has held back something good from them (Genesis 3:4–5). Even at this time, if Eve herself had heeded God's command that she told Satan and, decided to obey that command, moved away from that place, broke off conversing with Satan, or called Adam and spoke with him about it, she would not have fallen into sin. But she disobeyed God's Law, His command for them, by deciding to go by her feelings, her desires, and the things of her flesh, and also got Adam to do the same (Genesis 3:6); consequently, sin found its way into the human race. Even today it is very common to see that if it is written at some place "It is forbidden to walk on the grass", then from there itself people start to walk on the grass. If it is written “Plucking flowers is not allowed" then they will definitely try to pluck flowers. If it is written “Spitting is prohibited” or “Do not throw garbage”, then they will spit there, throw garbage at the very same place and spread filth. That is to say that by provoking the human tendency to violate the laws or the rules in some way, by continuing to stoke the inappropriate desire in the human mind, Satan makes man violate the Law, or the rules, and commit sin. But if a person is diligent to obey the rules, does not allow the unreasonable desire to stay in his mind, immediately suppresses those unreasonable desires, and moves away from that place or situation, then there remains no opportunity for Satan to fan the spark of those desires and blow them up into destructive flames of sin; and man is saved from committing sin.

In the next article, we'll look further at the limitations and other things related to the Law, through continuing to consider Romans chapter 7. But for now, this is an opportunity for us, especially those of us who call or consider ourselves Christians, to look deeper and more closely into our lives and identify our true standing. Let us examine and find out in what ways we are inclined to sin, by succumbing to desires unreasonable and inappropriate in the sight of God. Let us figure out, because of our inappropriate desires, where all have we have given Satan the opportunity to act in our lives, and also recognize how he has used us for our own harm, has made us sin. And, as seen in the previous article, instead of trying to rectify the situation by obeying some 'law' or certain ordinances, for those sins, we should repent according to 1 John 1:9 and ask God for their forgiveness; and thereby store our relationship with God.
