Does the Branch Cast Away in John 15:1-6 show that a Believer can be “Cut-Off” and be Destroyed? - Part 3

In the past two articles we have been considering John 15:1-6, particularly 15:2, to see whether it is a proof that salvation can be lost and the errant Believer can be cast away or destroyed or not, as some people allege on the basis of this verse 2. In the first article we had seen some basic principles of Bible study and interpretation, that help us in avoiding as well as identifying wrong interpretations and meanings. In the second article, we had applied the principle of studying the verse or passage in its context to this passage, i.e., John 15:1-6. By studying it in its context it had become apparent that this passage and its verse 2 cannot mean that salvation can be lost and a Believer can be cast away into destruction. Today, in this third article on this passage, we will apply another principle of Bible study and interpretation to this passage and verse 2, - that the Bible does not contradict itself, and see how interpreting John 15:2 to mean salvation can be lost, brings a contradiction with other Bible passages and verses, and therefore becomes an unacceptable interpretation of the passage and verse.

3. Some Other Related Bible Teachings, that Salvation cannot be lost:

  • Romans 8:1 says that there is no condemnation for those who are “in the Lord”. John 15:2, is about those “branches”, i.e., the disciples, who are “in the Lord”. If John 15:2 teaches salvation can be lost, then it directly contradicts Romans 8:1. But since the Bible never contradicts itself, therefore, the interpretation that John 15:2 teaches salvation can be lost is Biblically untrue and unacceptable.

  • John 10:28, 29 says that no one can take God’s people, His sheep, out of God’s and Jesus’s hands. A characteristic of God is that God alone is omnipotent, i.e., no one is stronger than God in any manner – neither physically, nor intellectually, nor spiritually. From Mark 3:27, we can see that to take a Believer away out of God's hands, for destruction means being stronger than God and able to over-power God – an impossibility. If Satan can take away a child of God out of His hands, then it implies that Satan is more powerful than God, physically, spiritually, and intellectually, and God is unable to do anything about it – another impossibility. Hence John 15:2 cannot imply that Satan can take away a Believer into destruction.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 tells us that a Believer can suffer loss of his rewards, but never of his salvation. In other words, once saved is saved forever.

  • We see from Luke 15:13, 30 that the Prodigal Son lived a very wayward life. But we also see from this parable that once he repented and returned to his father, everything was forgiven and forgotten. Though he lost the possessions that he had left with from home, he suffered shame, hunger, and insult, but he never lost his status of being a son in his home. He was restored to the same status as he had earlier, as soon as he repented and returned home.

  • Parable of the Fig tree (Luke 13:6-9) – The owner came seeking fruit from the tree for three years, but never found any. Therefore, he wanted it cut and removed from his garden. But the gardener asked one more year, some more time to make renewed efforts to make it bear fruit. This shows the forbearance of God. Instead of being hasty in judgment, especially condemnation, God gives time, environment, and opportunity (2 Peter 3:15) to his wayward children.

  • The incidence of the cursing of the Fig tree (Mark 11:13-14, Mark 11:20-21) cannot be used here since the Fig tree in this instance was putting up a pretense – it was not the season for figs, but that tree had put out leaves, that suggested the presence of fruit in it, which actually was not there. The tree was cursed because of its hypocrisy, not for the absence of fruit.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Does the Branch Cast Away in John 15:1-6 show that a Believer can be “Cut-Off” and be Destroyed? - Part 2

 2. Analyze the verse in its context:

Based on the basic principles of Bible study and interpretation, let us now analyze our lead verse - John 15:2 and see what information we can gather from it, about what it is actually saying.

Consider the following points:

  • The Lord Jesus is addressing His disciples here. Judas Iscariot has already left them and gone (John 13:30), and the Lord Jesus with His remaining disciples has departed from the place where they ate the Passover feast (John 14:31). So at this time, when this conversation is happening, the betrayer and the false disciple, Judas Iscariot is not with them.

  • This verse, John 15:2, is specifically addressed by the Lord Jesus to “the branch in Me” – i.e., the particular branch that already is in the Lord, not just superficially attached, but part of Him and drawing strength from the Lord.

  • From John 15:4-5 we learn that the branches and these disciples, are one and the same.

  • In John 15:3, the Lord once again calls the disciples "clean"; He had already done this once in John 13:10-11, and had indicated that His betrayer was not “clean” but the other disciples were. The original Greek language word translated "clean" is "katharos" which can also mean "pure". Notice that this and the previous points would have become false if Judas Iscariot had been with them at that time, since Judas was neither really “clean” nor actually attached to the Lord, as the other disciples were, as His “branch.”

  • Contrast this with John 15:6 which is about a branch that is apparently with the Lord, but not actually IN the Lord – this one is rejected, thrown away and withers away, e.g., Judas Iscariot - who was with Lord, but was never "IN the Lord", did not “abide” in the Lord.

From this preliminary analysis we learn that this conversation is between the Lord Jesus and the “clean” or true disciples who abide in the Lord; The Lord is addressing such disciples as His branches, while He Himself is the true Vine. Judas Iscariot - the son of perdition, has already been excluded.

So, if John 15:2 supports salvation can be lost, it means that those who are clean and IN the Lord Jesus, can still go to hell. This implies that Jesus's statement of the disciples being in Him, and being clean, doesn't actually mean much - the “clean” disciples and Judas Iscariot are at the same level, prone to the same fate. It also means that God the Son cannot ensure and maintain what He claims He has come to give us - eternal life, a life reconciled with God, spent with God in heaven; and we will still have to work for it, get it through our own ability and efforts, not through what the Lord Jesus has done for us - a patently absurd and unacceptable argument. So, the most important decision of our lives, and about the very purpose for which the Lord Jesus left heaven and came to earth for, is still not dependent upon Him, but upon our own works and efforts. Then, why did the Lord Jesus suffer all that He did, and do what He did, if He cannot ensure its outcome and keep His disciples safe from the devil and his devious ploys? Of what importance, if any, is it at all?

Part 1

English Translation

Does the Branch Cast Away in John 15:1-6 show that a Believer can be “Cut-Off” and be Destroyed? - Part 1

John 15:2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

The first part of this verse, John 15:2, is often used as one of the Bible texts that is alleged to support the erroneous doctrine that salvation can be lost. But it is not so; this interpretation is based upon the translation "He takes away" in this first part of the verse. How can we answer those who misuse this verse to “prove” that salvation can be lost? The word used in the original Greek language, that has been translated as "He takes away" in John 15:2 is ‘Aheero’, which has been used in the Scriptures at many other places, with other meanings and implications. The meaning "He takes away" that is understood in this verse is what needs to be seen and understood properly to come to a correct conclusion. We will consider this in some detail, under the following headings:

  1. Some Important and Basic Principles of Bible Interpretation

  2. Analyzing this verse in its context

  3. Other Related Teachings, that Salvation cannot be lost

  4. Some Supportive Bible verses/passages and Real Life Situations

  5. Some common uses of the phrase “Take/Lift Away”

  6. Some Bible verses Where ‘Aheero’ has been Translated Differently

  7. Conclusion - Coming to a Proper understanding of “Aheero” or “Lift up” in this verse.

Today we will start with the first heading and in the coming days cover the other headings and build up the correct interpretation and understanding of this verse.

1. Some Important and Basic Principles of Bible Interpretation:

  • Original text of the Bible was not written in Chapters and verses; this was a much later modification. Hence the division of thoughts and teachings into ‘verses’ is artificial, which can lead to erroneous interpretations. Therefore, always mentally remove this artificial division and see the text as one block.

  • Always study every word and verse and passage in its context – i.e., in its immediate setting and along with its surrounding verses, along with the thought process in use, and the example/object of the parable being considered; never out of consideration of these important things.

  • Look it up in different translations, and if possible, look up the original word and its meaning, specially for difficult passages.

  • Always use the Bible to interpret and understand the Bible – the Bible is its own best interpreter. Different parts of the Bible explain and clarify each other.

  • No interpretation we make, should contradict any other related verse or passage. The Bible always supports itself, never contradicts; so, if there is any discrepancy or contradiction, then the error is in the interpretation.

Understanding the Jealousy of God, Provoking Him to Jealousy. – Part 2.

With what we have seen in the previous article in mind, the Lord’s acting in jealousy becomes clearer and justifiable when we ponder and realize that there are only two ‘powers’ in this universe; one is God, the creator and owner of this universe and His angels; and the other is Satan, the rebellious angel, and his followers. Satan and his followers are all now the rivals and enemies of God, biding their time till they are finally destroyed and cast into everlasting hell. There is no other power or source of any power, other than these two, and everyone is either associated with God, or Satan. The one who is not associated with God in the manner God has prescribed it, through faith in His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, is automatically, or by default, associated with God’s enemy and rival, Satan. It is every person’s personal decision to either be associated and joined with God, or continue to remain with Satan as his follower.

So, if anyone, particularly a child of God, i.e., a Christian Believer, desires to share his love and affection, or associate with anyone other than God or anything that is not from God, then he can only be sharing or associating it, with Satan or his minions and their things. This quite naturally will not only be unacceptable, but even abhorrent to God for His possession; and He will act accordingly. If the Christian Believer does not respond to God’s cautions and admonitions, does not mend his ways and turn back to God whole-heartedly, then God will have to act accordingly, chastise him, to restore him back into His fold.

Think of it as a family-situation where a child is being disobedient to parents, is not mending his ways, persists in living contrary to the instructions given to him and is sullying the name of the family because of his life and behavior. If such a child does not listen to verbal cautions and admonitions, from the parents, then out of their love for the child and to safeguard him from future severe harm and harsh consequences, they have to act firmly, and resort to chastising him. Their chastisement is an act of love, is because of their possessiveness for him, and to draw the child back into the safety and care of the family. God has said the same in Hebrews 12:5-11.

So, the Lord’s jealousy is not the jealousy in the worldly sense, but is an act of love and care, to keep His people safe from the wiles of the devil. Now we can understand that the term “provoke to jealousy” implies, to be stimulated to act for the protection and care of someone who is God’s precious possession, and to do whatever needs to be done to bring God’s child back into God’s fold (1 Corinthians 5:5), even if it is hurting and painful for now, but is beneficial from the eternal perspective.

Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
