The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 43 – The Law & Christian Life / व्यवस्था और मसीही विश्वास का जीवन – 1

The Law & Living the Christian Faith – 1

In the previous articles, we have seen two out of the three questions related to the Law and practical life; the questions regarding the giving of life by the Law, and regarding the purpose behind giving of the Law. Today we'll look at the third question, the utility and role of the Law in the life of a Christian Believer. We had understood from the Lord Jesus' conversation with a Scribe in Matthew 22:35-40 what the term “the Law” actually stands for, and what it means to follow the Law. We had seen that the Law is not the fulfilling of any rituals, feasts, offerings, sacrifices, etc. Rather, the Law are God's instructions to come into and live in the right relationship with God and with fellow humans; the living by and fulfilling God’s instructions regarding these is the observance of the Law. When man comes into a correct relationship with God, he automatically begins to demonstrate and affirm it by his changed life, and by living in the right relationship with other human beings too. We'll take this same conversation between the Lord and the Scribe in the context of considering our third question today, but from Luke 10:25-28, especially Luke 10:28, where the Lord Jesus concluded this discussion by saying to the Scribe, "And He [The Lord Jesus] said to him, ‘You have answered rightly; do this and you will live’" (Luke 10:28). It is of great importance and certainly worth noting that the Lord Jesus did not say to him that "from now on you will no longer need to do all this. Just believe in me, and it will all be done automatically for you." But, at the conclusion of the talk, the Lord insisted and said to him, "Do this: then you will live", i.e., made fulfilling the correct understanding and interpretation of the Law mandatory, and never changed His words after that. Once again, it is to be noted that the Lord’s asking him to do “this” was not asking him to fulfill the performing of any rituals, feasts, offerings, sacrifices etc. Rather, He was asking to get into, and stay in the right relationship with, God and humans; as is evidenced by the parable of the Good Samaritan in following verses (Luke 10:29-37).

In the present times, the time of God's grace, the time of receiving salvation from the Lord as a gift, by faith, people may be confused about understanding the application of this teaching, of keeping the Law, misinterpreting it as again going towards becoming righteous by works. But it is not so. There is no doubt, no going back on the fact that the Lord Jesus has fulfilled the law and removed it from us, Christian Believers in the Lord Jesus are no longer required to observe these requirements of the Law, Christ Jesus and He alone is our salvation and life (Colossians 2:13-17). But also note here verse 14 and verse 16, “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14); "So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths" (Colossians 2:16). Pay attention and consider the words used here; According to verse 14, what was against us was the “handwriting of requirements” which in verse 16 is referred to as “food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths” etc. It is these that the Lord Jesus “has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” In the previous article we saw that all of these things are types and symbols of different aspects of the character, life, and work of the Lord Jesus Christ done for the salvation of all mankind. The Lord Jesus, having lived by and fulfilled all of these works for us in His body, has removed their requirement for us through His sacrifice and resurrection. The Lord has not removed the "Law," i.e., our coming into and living in a proper relationship with God and fellow human beings, which happens by coming into faith in the Lord Jesus.

In the next article we will look at some other things about this. If you are a Christian, and consider yourself righteous and acceptable to God by observance of any kind of “law”—whether of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination—and by the actions of your flesh; then, pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you can become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the requirements of the Law, but by following God's path of repentance and submission. Now, while you have the time and opportunity, take the right step, and leave the useless and fruitless path that you may have been walking upon till now.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 42 – Law & Life / व्यवस्था और जीवन – 6

The Utility of the Law – 2

In the previous article, considering the utility of the Law, we had seen that the Law was meant to make God’s people recognize sin and to be their teacher. Now, when the Lord Jesus has come and completed the work of salvation, all things of the Law were automatically fulfilled by Him, and then were removed from being necessary for being observed by the Lord's people; i.e., then onwards, that “teacher” was no longer required for them, “but when faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor" (Galatians 3:25). That teacher, the Law, having taught the Lord's people about sin, its consequences, accountability for sin, and the standards of God's righteousness, then handed us over to the perfect incarnation of God's righteousness, into the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now whosoever accepts the righteousness of God, as a gift, from the hands of the Lord, by coming into faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, becomes a child of God and His heir, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:26), and then in the Lord "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28).

Thus, we understand from Galatians 3 that the purpose of the Law was to, as a teacher, safeguard the Lord's people until the Lord, the promised Savior, came. Keeping them conscious of sin and its consequences, and to teach them that their redemption from sin is possible not through any works but only through coming into faith in the Redeemer. Because people did not understand the Law according to its true definition, but misinterpreted it as a formality of regularly observing the feasts and rituals, and the offering of gifts and sacrifices, they lost sight of the true purpose of the Law, and got lost in the impossible task of fulfilling it. Instead of letting them recognize sin through the Law as had been intended, they were entangled by Satan in the mistake of trying to be justified by the Law.

Even today most people in Christendom remain entrapped in making the same mistake. Even today they assume that by virtue of being born in a particular religion or family, because of their observances of the customs set by their church, denominations, sects, and communities, etc., in the form of certain days and festivals, traditions and rituals, and by participating in sacraments such as baptism, Holy Communion, etc. they are safe, and God is under compulsion to accept them as His children, to accept them to be with Him in heaven. By engaging in the things of their own making, they too have strayed from the truth of receiving God's righteousness through repentance and faith. Sadly, no one gives the slightest thought to the fact that when the Law given by God could not save people, how can the different laws of different churches and denominations, created and taught by man, deliver them?

Salvation, forgiveness of sins, becoming a child of God, and being accepted into God's kingdom, is not through observance of any Law, but only by repenting of sins and accepting the Lord Jesus as Savior, surrendering to Him. In the next article, we'll look at our third question, the role of the law in the lives of Christians. For now, if you are a Christian, and are hoping to justify yourself by observing any sort of "law" — whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God by being ‘good’ through the works of the flesh; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the Law, but only by following the God given path of repentance and submission to the Lord. Therefore, while you have the time and the opportunity, take the right decision, decide on the right path, and leave the useless and fruitless path.

Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 41 – Law & Life / व्यवस्था और जीवन – 5

The Utility of the Law – 1

At the beginning of this series, we had three questions before us, and we are yet to complete their answers: First, if salvation is not from the observance of the Law, then why does the Old and New Testaments speak of having life through the law? The second, then why was the Law given? And the third question is, does the Law have any utility or role, for us Christians, the people of the Lord, today? In the previous articles, we have looked at and understood the first of these questions, the receiving of life through the Law. We have seen that what God has said, He has also fulfilled it. People in the Old Testament and in the New Testament have entered eternal life, and continue to do so, through living by and the fulfilling of the correct definition of "the Law," i.e., coming into and maintaining the right relationship with God and fellow human beings, and what it means to “have life” according to the Bible. Today we'll consider the second question, the purpose of the Law being given to God's people.

For this please keep Galatians, chapter 3 before you from God’s Word, the Bible. In this chapter, after explaining the “curse of the Law”, i.e., the absolute necessity of its perfect observance, in the first 12 verses of this chapter, verse 13 states that Christ Jesus, became cursed for us, i.e., suffered and kept the Law in its fullness for us, and thereby gave us the freedom from the bondage of Law. And why did He do it, "that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith" (Galatians 3:14). God had promised Abraham that he would be the source of blessings for the whole world. This promise of God's blessings coming upon all people of the world through him, was made to him 430 years before the Law was given (Genesis 12:1-3; Galatians 3:16-18). And as it is written in Galatians 3:16, this promise given to Abraham was to be made available to all the people of the world through his seed, through the Lord Jesus Christ. According to 3:17, the Law did not nullify this promise; the promise remained very much in place, awaiting its fulfilment. The Law was only added to it, as God the Holy Spirit, states through Paul, "What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator” (Galatians 3:19). From the time the promise was given to Abraham, until the fulfilment of the promise in Christ Jesus, through the coming of the Lord Jesus as Savior of the world, the Law was given, to keep people continually aware of the state of their sinfulness, by repeated reminders (Hebrews 10: 3).

The Law not only made people realize their state of sinfulness, but also of their accountability for sin, as they repeatedly confessed their sins and offered the prescribed offerings and sacrifices for them time and again. It was by the Law, i.e., by coming before God's standards, that they could learn of and identify sin in and around them (Romans 3:20; 5:13). The Law was meant to be a teacher to teach people about sin, and to keep reminding them “... For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins” (Hebrews 10:4) and to safeguard them until the Lord comes to deliver and redeem them (Galatians 3:23-24). We already have seen that the actual meaning of the Law is to come into and remain in the right relationship with God and humans. All the feasts, offerings, sacrifices, rituals, etc. mentioned in the Law, are all fore-types and representations of various aspects of the character, life, and work of the Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of all mankind. The implication is that all these things in the Law, put together, show the full nature of the Lord Jesus Christ and His work of salvation in all its fullness. That is why, if these things that are given in the Law, i.e., the feasts, offerings, sacrifices, rituals, etc. are to be fulfilled by any person, then they have to be fulfilled, in-toto, in letter and in spirit, in true reverence, by him. A partial fulfilment, or a ritualistic fulfilment will tantamount to non-fulfilment, since that leaves the life and work of Christ Jesus incomplete and therefore inefficacious to save anyone. That's why only the Lord Jesus Christ could do it, and He did it too, for us; And that is why it is impossible for any person to perfectly fulfil the Law like the Lord Jesus did.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 40 – Law & Life / व्यवस्था और जीवन – 4

Harmful Effects of Formal Observation of the Law – 2

From the previous article we have started to consider the harmful effects of the formal observance of the Law as mere rituals and traditions. We had seen in the previous article that this kind of observance provides no spiritual benefits to a person; the emptiness in him troubles him about this. Today we will see further about such vain observance, from two more examples.

Nicodemus, a very senior religious official of the Jews, the ruler of the Pharisees, came to the Lord Jesus during the night with some questions in his mind (John 3:1-21). He was just preparing the grounds to tell his troubling thoughts to the Lord (verse 2) when the Lord interjected and gave him the answer to what was troubling his mind - whether or not he would enter the Kingdom of God (verse 3) - the Lord told him point-blank, that he had to be Born Again to even see the kingdom of God. Neither his religious knowledge, nor his religious status and prestige in the society had made him acceptable to God. Nicodemus tries to reason again (v. 4) and the Lord again cuts him off and again pointedly says that he must be Born Again for him to enter into the kingdom of heaven (v. 5). And from here onwards the Lord tells him how to identify those born naturally and those Born Again by the Spirit of God (verses 6-8). The implication is clear, that despite all his theology and religious status, he had not yet come into a proper relationship with God, and he felt within himself the restlessness of lacking this right relationship with God. But he still had doubts about how this could happen (verse 9). Though he knew these things, but did not obey them, as is clear from the Lord’s rebuke for him (verse 10). In verse 10, the Lord says something very important to him; notice that the Lord did not say, "Don't you know these things?" But he said, "... you, being the teacher of the Israelites, do you not understand these things?" That is, though he knew these things, but he did not understand their practical application, that is why he did not fulfil them. As a religious leader, he used to speak of and teach the things of God to the people. But, while he was engaged in performing the formalities of religion, there was deep restlessness in his own life. Since his formal engagement in fulfilling the obligations of his religion had not brought him into the right relationship with God. To come into this right and satisfying relationship, he needed to be Born Again, i.e., to repent of his sins and submit himself fully to God. And this is what the Lord was showing and explaining to him in verse 11-21.

Paul, formerly known as Saul, was also a very knowledgeable Pharisee and was very zealous for God. He could not bear anything against God, as per his own understanding, and he was very active in capturing and punishing those whom he thought were going contrary to God’s Law (Acts 8:3; 9:1). His behavior was based upon the teachings he received and the understanding about God's Word and Law he had developed. But his vision of the Lord Jesus Christ and conversation with Him on the road to Damascus brought about a fundamental change in his life and outlook (Acts 9:3-9); it made him recognize the futility of his own understanding of keeping the Law, and he immediately let go of his vain understanding and worthless zeal. He immediately corrected his relationship with God, and consequently his relationship, behavior, and attitude towards fellow human beings also got corrected. In his letter to the Christians in Philippi, he refers to these old attitudes, which he once was proud of, but now speaks of them disparagingly, calling them harmful and rubbish, preferring instead to grow in the likeness of the Lord Jesus. (Philippians 3:7-11). The life of Paul before he was Born Again, and that of the other Pharisees of that time shows that the formal, ritualistic observance of the Law had so blinded them that when the Lord Jesus, about whom the Law and the whole of the Old Testament testified (Luke 24:25-27; John 5:39), came before them in person, and through His life, teachings, and works showed to them who He really was, they still could not recognize or accept Him. Instead, for the sake of their contrived religiosity and reverence, and for living by it, they had the Lord, whom they professed to revere, killed.

These three examples of Scripture show that for those who remain entrapped in Satan’s deception, devices, and devious machinations of being ‘religious’, or, ‘following their religion’ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), he makes them misinterpret and misunderstand the "Law," and follow it inappropriately; for them that Law only creates restlessness and lack of peace in their lives; makes them spiritually blind and unable to understand God’s Word; he traps them in their own contrived reverence and religiosity; and without their realizing it, he turns them into being contrary to God. One major sign about their being entrapped by Satan is that they do not have a sense of personally being in close proximity to God and of having His peace in their lives (John 14:27; 16:33). But as soon as a person comes into the right relationship with God through repentance and seeking forgiveness of his sins, i.e., is Born Again, automatically his outlook also changes, and his relationship with fellow humans also changes, and improves. His changed life bears open and clear testimony to the fact that he has now entered life - the eternal life promised by God. If for religious scholars and leaders like Nicodemus and Paul it was mandatory to repent and seek forgiveness of sins, and be Born Again, then you can see for yourself how necessary and imperative it is for us as well.

In the next article, we will look at the utility of the Law.  For now, if you are a Christian, and are hoping to justify yourself by observing any sort of "law" — whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God by being ‘good’ through the works of the flesh and religion; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the Law or any religion, but only by following the God given path of repentance and submission to the Lord. Therefore, while you have the time and the opportunity, take the right decision, decide on the right path, and leave the useless and fruitless path.
