    पिछले लेख में हमने इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दी गई आरंभिक बातों में से पहली, अर्थात मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराना को देखना आरम्भ किया था। हमने सीखा था कि “मरे हुए काम” वे भले और धार्मिक दिखने वाले काम हैं जो मसीही करते तो हैं, और अकसर बहुत श्रद्धा और भक्ति के साथ करते हैं, किन्तु उन के करने से उन मसीहियों के आत्मिक जीवनों में कोई उन्नति नहीं होती है, कोई परिपक्वता नहीं आती है। यद्यपि इस प्रकार के कार्य इस धारणा के साथ किए जाते हैं कि उन से मसीहियों को परमेश्वर से प्रशंसा और आशीष प्राप्त होगी, किन्तु मसीहियों के जीवन में वे व्यर्थ और निष्फल ही रहते हैं। ऐसा इसलिए होता है क्योंकि ये उन  के लिए परमेश्वर द्वारा निर्धारित किए हुए कार्य नहीं हैं, बल्कि वे कार्य हैं जो उन मसीहियों ने अपनी ही कल्पना के अनुसार अपने लिए निर्धारित कर लिए हैं, और वे उन्हें अपनी ही बुद्धि और समझ के अनुसार करते हैं, न कि परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता में, और फिर उन कार्यों को परमेश्वर पर थोप देते हैं कि उन्हें उन के लिए प्रतिफल दिए जाएँ।

    अधिकांशतः ये कार्य शैतानी युक्तियाँ होते हैं जो मसीही को परमेश्वर के वचन का अध्ययन और पालन करने से, तथा उनके लिए परमेश्वर की इच्छा को समझने और जानने से दूर रखते हैं। बल्कि मसीहियों को बहका और भरमा कर उन्हें, परमेश्वर की आज्ञाओं के भेष में सिखाई जाने वाली मनुष्यों की आज्ञाओं तथा मनुष्यों द्वारा बनाए गए रीति-रिवाजों और परम्पराओं का पालन करने में डाल देते हैं। बाइबल हमें सिखाती है कि जो एकमात्र बात परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न करती है वह है उसकी तथा उसके वचन की आज्ञाकारिता (व्यवस्थाविवरण 5:29; 1 शमूएल 15:22; यिर्मयाह 7:22-23)। परमेश्वर के नाम में किन्तु अपनी ही कल्पनाओं के अनुसार परन्तु की गई बातों से परमेश्वर बिल्कुल प्रसन्न नहीं होता है, चाहे वे धार्मिक, भक्तिपूर्ण, और भली ही क्यों न हों, और लोग उन्हें कितना भी क्यों ना सराहें। परमेश्वर ऐसे कामों के लिए कोई आशीष अथवा प्रतिफल नहीं देता है, वरन ऐसे काम, उन के करने वालों के लिए बहुत हानि उत्पन्न कर सकते हैं; और इसीलिए पहली आरंभिक बात है इस प्रकार के सभी कार्यों के करने से मन फिराना। आज से हम इसे बाइबल के कुछ उदाहरणों द्वारा देखना आरंभ करेंगे।

    इस प्रकार के अपनी ही कल्पना से किए गए, और न केवल व्यर्थ और निष्फल, वरन अनन्तकाल के लिए हानिकारक और विनाशक कामों का एक उदाहरण लोगों द्वारा स्वयं ही निर्धारित की गई वे सेवकाइयाँ हैं जिन्हें वे प्रभु के नाम में बड़े जोर-शोर और उत्साह से करते हैं (मत्ती 7:21-23)। प्रभु के “पहाड़ी उपदेश” से लिए गए इस खण्ड के लेख पर ध्यान कीजिए, प्रभु यीशु के स्वयं के शब्दों में, उन लोगों द्वारा की जा रही सेवकाइयाँ, अर्थात भविष्यवाणी करना, दुष्टात्माओं को निकालना, और अचम्भे के काम करना, ये सभी वास्तव में हुए थे। ये लोग प्रभु से यह नहीं कह रहे हैं कि उन्होंने उसके नाम में यह करने के प्रयास किये थे, बल्कि वे एक निश्चित कथन कह रहे हैं कि उन्होंने यह सब उसके नाम में किया, अर्थात वे यह सब करने में सफल रहे थे। साथ ही, उन्होंने यह सब प्रभु ही के नाम में किया था, न कि किसी अन्य देवी-देवता अथवा किसी व्यक्ति के नाम में, अपने नाम भी नहीं। लेकिन फिर भी उनके लिए प्रभु का उत्तर है “तब मैं उन से खुलकर कह दूंगा कि मैं ने तुम को कभी नहीं जाना, हे कुकर्म करने वालों, मेरे पास से चले जाओ” (मत्ती 7:23)। इतना सब करने के बाद भी प्रभु का उन से यह कहने का कारण मत्ती 7:21 में दिया गया है – ये काम पिता परमेश्वर की इच्छा में और उसके अनुसार नहीं किये गए थे। केवल वे ही जो परमेश्वर पिता की इच्छा के अनुसार चलते हैं, स्वर्ग में जाने पाएँगे; अन्य कोई नहीं, और अपने कामों के आधार पर तो कोई भी प्रवेश नहीं करेगा।

    यहाँ पर एक असमंजस हो सकता है कि प्रभु के नाम में इन लोगों के द्वारा ये कार्य करना कैसे संभव हुआ, और फिर भी उन्हें करने के लिए प्रभु ने उनकी सराहना नहीं की? उत्तर है कि शैतान के पास भी बड़े और सामर्थी काम करने की शक्ति है (2 थिस्सलुनीकियों 2:4, 9-10; प्रकाशितवाक्य 13:13-15)। शैतान ज्योतिर्मय स्वर्गदूत का रूप धारण कर के, और उसके लोग मसीह के झूठे प्रेरितों, छल से काम करने वाले, और धर्म के सेवक बनकर आते हैं (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15)। इन अपनी ही इच्छा और समझ के अनुसार काम करने वाले लोगों की सहायता शैतान और उसके लोग करते हैं कि वे आश्चर्यकर्म प्रतीत होने वाले ये कार्य इस गलतफहमी में रहते हुए करें कि वे परमेश्वर के लिए और परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य से ये काम कर रहे हैं। इस परिस्थिति से बचने का एकमात्र मार्ग है परमेश्वर के साथ एक निकट का संपर्क और वार्तालाप बनाए रखना, उसकी इच्छा को जानना और पहचानना (रोमियों 12:1-2), और परमेश्वर से जानना कि उसने उन के लिए कौन सा काम निर्धारित किया है (इफिसियों 2:10)। यह तब ही संभव है जब परमेश्वर के वचन का अध्ययन करने को प्राथमिकता दी जाए। जब लोग परमेश्वर के वचन के अध्ययन में समय लगाते हैं, उसके वचन में होकर परमेश्वर के साथ वार्तालाप करते हैं, तब परमेश्वर पिता और प्रभु उनके साथ संगति करते हैं (यूहन्ना 14:21, 23)। प्रभु यीशु के सच्चे शिष्यों की यह प्रवृत्ति होती है कि वे उसके वचन में बने रहते हैं (1 यूहन्ना 2:3-5), और इससे वे सत्य को जान लेते हैं शैतान की युक्तियों से स्वतंत्र रहते हैं (यूहन्ना 8:31-32)। प्रभु के साथ संगति में बने रहने और परमेश्वर के वचन से भली-भाँति अवगत रहने के द्वारा मसीही न केवल शैतान द्वारा उन से वह करवाने से सुरक्षित रहेंगे जो परमेश्वर ने उन से करने के लिए नहीं कहा है, बल्कि यह भी जान लेंगे कि परमेश्वर क्या चाहता है कि वे करें, और क्या न करें। जो भी परमेश्वर की इच्छा में और उसके द्वारा निर्धारित तरीके से किया जाएगा, उस पर हमेशा परमेश्वर की आशीष होगी; शेष सब कुछ तिरस्कार कर के फेंक दिया जाएगा।

    यह एक प्रकार के “मरे हुए काम” हैं जिनसे सभी मसीहियों को मन फिराना है – अपनी ही इच्छा से स्वयं के लिए निर्धारित किये हुए कार्य, न कि परमेश्वर से पूछने, उसकी इच्छा पता पड़ने की प्रतीक्षा करने, और फिर वह करने के जो परमेश्वर करने को कहे। जो भी स्वयं को सही लगे उसे ही अपनी समझ के अनुसार करना, परमेश्वर को उसकी आज्ञाकारिता के द्वारा नहीं बल्कि अपने कार्यों से प्रभावित करने का प्रयास करना, और उसके वचन का अध्ययन करने तथा परमेश्वर की इच्छा जानने में उसके साथ समय न बिताना, असफलताओं और मुसीबतों को दावत देने की अचूक विधि है। अगले लेख में हम एक अन्य प्रकार के मरे हुए काम को देखेंगे जिस से मन फिराना है।

    यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Repentance From Dead Works - 2

 

    In the previous article we began considering the first of the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., repentance from dead works. We learnt that “dead works” are those seemingly religious and good works that a Christian Believer does, often very reverently and piously, but they do not in any manner contribute to his spiritual growth and maturity. Though these kinds of works are done trusting that they will gain the Believer the favor and blessings of God, but they remain vain and infructuous in the Christian Believers life. This is because these works are not God assigned for him, but are those that the Believer has presumptively decided for himself, and does them according to his own wisdom and understanding, instead of in obedience to God; and then imposes them upon God for rewards.

    More often than not, these are satanic ploys to keep the Believer involved in things that keep him away from studying and obeying God’s Word, and knowing God’s will for him. Instead, the Believer is beguiled into learning and obeying the commandments of men, following man-ordained religious rites and rituals, in the garb of God’s commandments. The Bible teaches us that the only thing that pleases God is obedience to Him and His Word (Deuteronomy 5:29; 1 Samuel 15:22; Jeremiah 7:22-23). God is not pleased with things done presumptively in His name, even though they may be religious, pious, and good works, and may even be well appreciated by the people. Such works and practices do not bring any blessings and rewards from God, but may cause great harm to those who do them; and hence the first elementary principle is to repent from all such works. We will see this illustrated through some Biblical examples from today.

    One category of such presumptive, and not just vain and fruitless but eternally harmful and destructive works are the various kinds of self-determined ministries carried out by many people with great fan-fare and enthusiasm in the name of the Lord (Matthew 7:21-23). Notice from the text of this passage, in the Lord Jesus’s own words, from the “Sermon on the Mount” that these ministries carried out by these people, i.e., prophesying, casting out demons, and doing many wonders, all of them did happen. These people are not saying to the Lord that “we tried or attempted to do them in your name;” rather they make a categorical statement that they carried them out in His name, were successful in doing all that they claimed. Moreover, they did them all in the name of the Lord, not in the name of any other deity or person, not even their own names, but in the name of the Lord Jesus. Yet, the Lord’s reply to them is, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:23; KJV translates it as ‘ye that work iniquity’ and NIV translates it as ‘you evildoers!’). The reason for the Lord’s saying this to them despite their doing these great things in His name is given in Matthew 7:21 – they were not done in and according to God’s will. Only those who do the will of God the Father shall enter heaven; no one else, and none will enter because of their works of any kind.

    There can be a confusion here, that how did these people manage to do such great works in the Lord name, and yet were not acknowledged by the Lord for doing them? The answer is because Satan too has powers to work great and mighty works (2 Thessalonians 2:4, 9-10; Revelation 13:13-15). Satan can come as an angel of light, and his people as false apostles of Christ, deceitful workers, ministers of righteousness, to beguile God’s people (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). Satan and his people help the presumptuous people in doing these miraculous works, while people think and believe that they are doing the works with the power of God, for God. The only way to avoid this situation is to have a close fellowship and communication with God, to be able to learn His will (Romans 12:1-2), and learn from God, which of the works that He has kept for them (Ephesians 2:10) should they be doing. This can only happen by giving priority to studying God’s Word. When people spend time studying God’s Word, communing with God through His Word, then God the Father and the Lord will fellowship with them (John 14:21, 23). The true disciples of Lord Jesus make it a point to abide in His Word (1 John 2:3-5), and thereby the know the truth and be free (John 8:31-32) from the ploys of the devil. Because of his fellowship with the Lord and being well versed in God’s Word, the Believer will not only remain safe from being misled by Satan into presumptively doing things which God never asked them to do, but will also know what God wants him to do and what not to do. Whatever is done in God’s will, in the manner ordained by God, will always have God’s blessings; all the rest will be rejected and cast away.

    This is one category of “dead works” that all Believers need to repent from – working presumptuously instead of waiting upon God to find out what God has in mind for them, and then do that. Doing whatever seems appropriate to them by their own thinking, trying to impress God by their works instead of by their obedience to Him, and not spending proper time in studying God’s Word to know His will for them is a sure-shot way to disaster and failures. In the next article we will take up another kind of “dead work” to be repented from.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि कैसे इन आरंभिक बातों के अध्ययन का आरम्भ हमें परमेश्वर के दो गुणों, धीरज और निबाहने, को दिखाता है। यह मसीही विश्वासियों, प्रभु यीशु के अनुयायियों के सामने अनुसरण करने के लिए एक उदाहरण को रखता है कि किसी से भी जल्दी ही मुँह न फेर लें, बल्कि धीरज से उसके साथ निबाहते रहें, और उनकी सहायता करें, उनकी कमजोरियों में उन्हें संभालें और सिखाएं, और परमेश्वर अपने समय में लोगों को उसके राज्य और महिमा के लिए फलवन्त बना देगा। आज से हम इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में उल्लेखित छः आरम्भिक बातों में से पहली, “मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराना” के बारे में सीखना आरम्भ करेंगे।

    इस वाक्यांश को पढ़ते समय, प्रवृत्ति केवल शब्द “मन फिराने” पर ही ध्यान केंद्रित करने की रहती है, और यह मान लिया जाता है कि जो लिखा हुआ है वह उद्धार के लिए पापों से मन फिराने, या परमेश्वर के साथ संगति में बहाल हो जाने के बारे में लिखा गया है। इसकी बजाए, वाक्यांश के अन्य शब्दों पर ध्यान पूर्वक विचार करना चाहिए, तथा देखना चाहिए कि वाक्यांश वास्तव में क्या कह रहा है। ध्यान कीजिए कि यह पत्री मसीही विश्वासियों को लिखी गई है; इसलिए, वे परमेश्वर की सन्तान बनने के लिए पश्चाताप करने या मन फिराने की प्रक्रिया से होकर पहले ही निकल चुके हैं। साथ ही, जैसा हमने इब्रानियों 5:11-14 का अध्ययन करते हुए देखा था, सन्दर्भ उनके उद्धार पाने का नहीं, बल्कि उनकी आत्मिक उन्नति और परिपक्वता का है। ये इब्रानी विश्वासी अपनी आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी में बहुत पिछड़ गए हैं, और यहाँ तक पीछे आ चुके हैं कि अब उन्हें ने जन्मे हुए आत्मिक शिशुओं के समान ‘दूध’ पिलाए जाने की, अर्थात मसीही विश्वास के आधारभूत सिद्धान्तों को फिर से सिखाए जाने आवश्यकता हो गई है। वे नया जन्म पाए हुए हैं, वे मसीही विश्वास में हैं, लेकिन अब उन्हें विश्वास की मौलिक बातों को फिर से सिखाने और उन्हें आत्मिक जीवनों में पोषित करने की आवश्यकता पड़ गई है, जैसे कि परमेश्वर के नवजात आत्मिक शिशुओं को होती है। इस बात को ध्यान में रखते हुए हम अब समझ सकते हैं कि यहाँ पर उल्लेखित मन फिराने का अर्थ उद्धार के लिए पापों से पश्चाताप करना नहीं हो सकता है, क्योंकि वह तो अविश्वासियों के लिए होता है। इसलिए, हम इस पहली आरम्भिक बात के वाक्यांश को फिर से देखते हैं, कि वहाँ क्या लिखा गया है; वहाँ लिखा है “मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराना।” जैसे उद्धार के लिए मन फिराने या पश्चाताप करने का अर्थ होता है साँसारिक और पापमय जीवन को पूर्णतः त्याग देना और उससे अपना मुँह फेर लेना, उसी प्रकार से पवित्र आत्मा इस पत्री के लेखक में होकर परमेश्वर के लोगों, परमेश्वर की सन्तानों से यह आग्रह कर रहा है कि जिन कामों में वे लगे हुए हैं, जो उनकी कोई सहायता नहीं कर रहे हैं, बल्कि उनकी हानि ही कर रहे हैं, उन्हें पूर्णतः त्याग दें, उन कामों से मुँह फेर लें।

    ध्यान कीजिए कि इब्रानियों 5:11-12 पर विचार करते समय हमने देखा था कि ये इब्रानी विश्वासी, उनके उद्धार पाने के समय के आधार पर उनसे रखी गई अपेक्षाओं से, किसी कारणवश बहुत बुरी तरह से पिछड़ गए थे। और अब वे जो भी कर रहे थे, वह उनकी आत्मिक उन्नति में कोई सहायता नहीं कर रहा था, बल्कि उन्हें उनके आत्मिक जीवनों में और पीछे खींच रहा था। साथ ही उस समय की परिस्थितियों पर भी विचार कीजिए; जैसा कि प्रेरित यूहन्ना ने लिखा है, “हे प्रियो, हर एक आत्मा की प्रतीति न करो: वरन आत्माओं को परखो, कि वे परमेश्वर की ओर से हैं कि नहीं; क्योंकि बहुत से झूठे भविष्यद्वक्ता जगत में निकल खड़े हुए हैं” (1 यूहन्ना 4:1; साथ ही 1 यूहन्ना 2:18 पर भी ध्यान कीजिए); और प्रेरित पौलुस ने 2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15 में सचेत किया है कि शैतान और उस के लोग कलीसियाओं में मसीह के झूठे प्रेरित, छल से काम करने वाले, धर्म के सेवक, और ज्योतिर्मय स्वर्गदूत का रूप धरकर घुस आते हैं। इस प्रकार से पहली कलीसिया के समय से लेकर आज तक भी, उस समय से लेकर जब लोग मसीही विश्वास में प्रभु के प्रेरितों द्वारा लाए और वचन सिखाए जा रहे थे, शैतान अपने लोगों को कलीसियाओं में घुसाने और गलत शिक्षाओं तथा झूठे सिद्धान्तों को सिखाने में लगा हुआ है, और लोगों को बहका और भरमा रहा है (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:3), कि वे वास्तविक मसीही विश्वास के और परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं के मानने वाले नहीं रहें। पौलुस गलतिया के विश्वासियों को बड़े दुःख के साथ लिखता है, “हे निर्बुद्धि गलतियों, किस ने तुम्हें मोह लिया है? तुम्हारी तो मानों आंखों के सामने यीशु मसीह क्रूस पर दिखाया गया!” (गलतियों 3:1); और “पर अब जो तुम ने परमेश्वर को पहचान लिया वरन परमेश्वर ने तुम को पहचाना, तो उन निर्बल और निकम्मी आदि-शिक्षा की बातों की ओर क्यों फिरते हो, जिन के तुम दोबारा दास होना चाहते हो? तुम दिनों और महीनों और नियत समयों और वर्षों को मानते हो। मैं तुम्हारे विषय में डरता हूं, कहीं ऐसा न हो, कि जो परिश्रम मैं ने तुम्हारे लिये किया है व्यर्थ ठहरे” (गलतियों 4:9-11)।

    इसलिए यह बाइबल की स्पष्ट शिक्षा है कि मसीहियत के आरम्भ से ही, शैतान सक्रिय होकर अपनी विभिन्न युक्तियों के द्वारा विश्वासियों को बहकाता और भरमाता आया है कि वे आत्मिक जीवन में उन्नति न करने पाएँ। शैतान की इन युक्तियों का आधार मसीही विश्वासियों को ऐसी बातों को करने में उलझा देना है जो उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन के अध्ययन और पालन करने से दूर रखें, ताकि वे सही आत्मिक खुराक प्राप्त न कर सकें। शैतान लोगों को भरमाता है कि अनेकों प्रकार के “धर्म के कार्यों” और भले कामों को करने के द्वारा, जिन में से अधिकाँश परमेश्वर की ओर से लोगों को सौंपे गए नहीं होते हैं, बल्कि लोगों ने स्वयं ही अपने लिए चुन और निर्धारित कर लिए होते हैं, वे परमेश्वर को प्रभावित करने पाएंगे, उससे प्रशंसा और आशीष प्राप्त कर लेंगे, जो कि बाइबल के अनुसार एक झूठी शिक्षा है। ये बहकाए और भरमाए हुए लोग यह एहसास नहीं करते हैं कि अदन की वाटिका के समय से ही, परमेश्वर ने केवल एक ही बात मनुष्य से चाही है कि वह परमेश्वर और उसके वचन की आज्ञाकारिता करे; और मनुष्य जब भी पाप में गिरा है, वह हमेशा इसी बात, परमेश्वर और उसके वचन की अनाज्ञाकारिता के कारण ही हुआ है, जो कि परमेश्वर के वचन के स्थान पर मनुष्य के वचन और मनुष्य के वचन की आज्ञाकारिता ले आने के कारण होता है। परमेश्वर के वचन के स्थान पर रखे गए मनुष्य के वचन और उनकी आज्ञाकारिता कभी भी परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य नहीं होती है; परमेश्वर उस से कभी प्रसन्न नहीं होता है (यशायाह 1:11-16 – इन पदों में परमेश्वर द्वारा ‘तुम्हारे’ के उपयोग पर विशेष ध्यान कीजिए), वे सभी व्यर्थ और निष्फल रहते हैं। यही वे “मरे हुए काम” हैं जिन्हें करने के लिए शैतान मसीही विश्वासियों को बहकाता और भरमाता है, परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता के स्थान पर उन बातों का पालन करवाता है। यही वह पहली आरंभिक बात है जिसे सीखना और जिसका पालन किया जाना चाहिए – प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को उन से मन फिराना चाहिए – उन्हें पहचान और स्वीकार कर के, उन्हें पूर्णतः त्याग देना चाहिए, उनसे मुँह मोड़ लेना चाहिए; उन सभी “मरे हुए कामों” से अलग हो जाना चाहिए जो उसे परमेश्वर के वचन का अध्ययन और पालन करने से रोकते हैं।

    अगले लेख में हम बाइबल से “मारे हुए कामों” के कुछ उदाहरणों को देखेंगे, जिन से पश्चाताप करने की आवश्यकता है; ऐसे काम जो उन लोगों के लिए समस्याओं और आशीषों को गँवाने का कारण बने, उन लोगों को लगता था कि उन बातों का पालन करने के द्वारा वे परमेश्वर की सेवा कर रहे हैं, किन्तु वास्तव में वे अनजाने में शैतान के कहे के अनुसार चल रहे थे।

Repentance From Dead Works - 1

 

    In the previous article, we have seen how the beginning of the study on the elementary principles shows patience and perseverance as attributes of God. This places before the Christian Believers, the followers of the Lord Jesus, an example to be followed; i.e., not to easily give up on anyone, but to be patient, persevere with them, help and nurture them through their weaknesses and short-comings, and God in His time, will make people bring fruit for His Kingdom and glory. Today we will start studying the first of the six elementary principles mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., “repentance from dead works.”

    When reading this phrase, often, the tendency is to concentrate only upon the first word – ‘repentance’ and assume what is written is about repenting from sins for salvation, or for being restored in fellowship with God. Instead, careful attention should be paid to the remaining parts of the phrase, and it should be seen what the phrase actually is saying. Remember, this letter has been written to Christian Believers; therefore, they have already been through the process of repenting from their sins to become the children of God. Also, as we have seen from Hebrews 5:11-14, the context is not their salvation, but their spiritual growth and maturity. These Hebrew Believers have slipped up in their spiritual growth, and declined so much that now they are like spiritually newly born children, and they need to be fed the ‘milk’ i.e., the basics of Christian faith. They have been Born-Again, they have come into the Christian faith, but now they need to be taught the basics of the faith and nurtured in their spiritual lives once again like newly Born-Again children of God. With this in mind, we can see that for them the mention of repentance cannot be the repentance for salvation; which is meant for the unbelievers. Therefore, let us look at the phrase of the first elementary principle again, it says “repentance from dead works.” Just as for salvation, to repent means to give up and totally turn away from the worldly and sinful life, similarly, the Holy Spirit, through the author of this letter, is appealing to the people of God, the children of God to repent, i.e., to give up and totally turn away from what they had got involved in doing, which was not helping, but only harming them.

    Recall that while considering Hebrews 5:11-12 we had seen that these Hebrew Believers, for some reason, had fallen terribly short of the expectations that were from them, according to their time since being saved. Now, whatever they were doing was not building them up spiritually, but was only pulling them down in their spiritual lives. Also consider the circumstances around them at that time; as the Apostle John says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1; see also 1 John 2:18); and the Apostle Paul has cautioned in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 that Satan and his people infiltrate the Church in the form of false apostles of Christ, deceitful workers, ministers of righteousness, angel of light etc. So, since the time of the first Church, and even within the Believers being brought into the Christian faith and being taught God’s Word through the Apostles, till today, Satan had infiltrated his people into the Church to spread false teachings, wrong doctrines, and beguile people away (2 Corinthians 11:3) from following the true Christian faith and the true teachings of God’s Word. Paul laments in Galatians 3:1 “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?” and, “But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain”).

    So, the teaching of the Bible is clear that from the very beginning of Christianity, Satan has been actively deceiving and beguiling the Believers, through his various ploys, so that the Believers do not grow spiritually. The mainstay of these satanic ploys is to entangle the Christian Believers in various other things that keep them away from studying and following God’s Word, and thereby not allow them to receive proper spiritual nourishment. Satan deceives people into thinking that by doing various “religious” activities and good works, most of which are not God given to them but are those that they have thought and planned out for themselves, they will be able to impress God, gain His favor and blessings; which is a Biblically false teaching. But what these beguiled people do not realise is that since the Garden of Eden, all God has wanted from man has only been obedience to Him and His Word; and whenever man has fallen away, he has fallen away because of disobeying God and substituting God’s Word, God’s instructions by man’s word and instructions. Man’s words and instructions replacing God’s Word and instructions, are never accepted and blessed by God; they never please God (Isaiah 1:11-16 – take not of the use of ‘your’ by God in these verses), they remain vain and fruitless. These are the “dead works” – the vain and fruitless works that Satan beguiles the Christian Believers into indulging in, at the cost of obeying God. This is the first elementary principle to be leant and followed – every Christian Believer should repent – acknowledge and totally turn away, totally reject all “dead works” and then stay away from all that keeps him from studying God’s Word and applying it in his life.

    In the next article we will see some examples from the Bible of the “dead works” that need to be repented of; works that brought problems and loss of blessings for those who thought they were serving God through them, but actually, unknowingly they had been obeying Satan through those works.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    आरंभिक बातों से सम्बन्धित पिछले लेखों में, परिचय के रूप में हमने इब्रानियों 5:11-14 से देखा था कि मसीही विश्वासी के लिए परमेश्वर के वचन को सीखते रहना, तथा साथ ही उसको औरों को सिखाते भी रहना, क्यों और कैसे आवश्यक है। यदि मसीही विश्वासी अपने मसीही जीवन और  सेवकाई के इस पक्ष को अनदेखा कर देता है तो वह अपनी आत्मिक परिपक्वता और बढ़ोतरी में पिछड़ने लग जाता है और, इतना पिछड़ सकता है कि आत्मिक शिशु अवस्था या छोटे बालक के समान हो जाए, और उसे आरंभिक बातों को फिर से सिखाने की आवश्यकता हो जाए। ऐसे में इन सिद्धान्तों को फिर से सिखाया जाना आवश्यक है क्योंकि ये आरम्भिक बातें प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी के लिए आधारभूत हैं। यदि विश्वासी इन से अवगत नहीं है, इन में स्थापित नहीं है तो वह और आगे की गूढ़ बातें, परमेश्वर के वचन की उन्नत और गम्भीर बातें समझ और सीख नहीं पाएगा, जैसा कि इस पत्री के लेखक ने इब्रानियों 5:11-12 में कहा है। यह लेखक की, अर्थात परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की, जिसकी अगुवाई में ये पत्री लिखी गई है, अपेक्षा थी कि जिन विश्वासियों को यह पत्री लिखे गई थी, वे इतने परिपक्व हो गए होंगे कि न केवल औरों को सिखाने पाएँ, वरन, परमेश्वर के वचन के गूढ़ शिक्षाओं को भी ग्रहण कर लें। किन्तु क्योंकि वे इस अपेक्षा पर खरे नहीं उतरे इसलिए इस पत्री का लेखक उन्हें उन आरंभिक बातों को, इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में उन बातों का नाम लेकर, उनका स्मरण करवाता है।

    इब्रानियों 6:1-2 से हम देखते हैं कि लेखक इन आरम्भिक बातों की चर्चा में नहीं जाता है, उन्हें केवल इन छः मौलिक बातों का स्मरण करवा देता है; और फिर सिद्धता के ओर आगे बढ़ने की बात कहता है। यहाँ पर उल्लेखित ये छः मौलिक आरंभिक बातें हैं, मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराना, परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करना, बपतिस्मों, हाथ रखना, मरे हुओं के जी उठना, और अन्तिम न्याय। प्रकट तात्पर्य है कि उन मसीही विश्वासियों से अपेक्षा की गई थी कि इन मौलिक बातों या सिद्धान्तों के बारे में अपनी जानकारी और शिक्षाओं को वे दोहराएंगे, और ध्यान में ले आएँगे; जिसके लिए उनमें निवास करने वाला पवित्र आत्मा उनकी सहायता करेगा। यहाँ पर आज के मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण शिक्षा है, कि उन्हें गूढ़ बातों को सीखने के साथ ही, मसीही विश्वास की इन आधारभूत बातों से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाओं को दोहराते रहना और ताज़ा बनाए रखना चाहिए। इन आधारभूत बातों को ध्यान में ताज़ा बनाए रखना बहुत आवश्यक है क्योंकि उनकी सेवकाई में उनके समय का एक मुख्य भाग नए विश्वासियों या बाल्यावस्था से निकल कर आगे बढ़ने वाले विश्वासियों के साथ संपर्क और वार्तालाप में व्यतीत होगा। इसलिए उन्हें इन आधारभूत बातों की आवश्यकता, गूढ़ बातों से कहीं अधिक पड़ेगी। साथ ही जैसा हमने इब्रानियों 5:13-14 से देखा है, “ठोस आहार” या “अन्न” सयानों के लिए होता है; इसलिए गूढ़ बातें सीखने के बाद भी, उन्हें शिशुओं और बच्चों के मध्य में उपयोग नहीं किया जा सकेगा। नि:सन्देह, गूढ़ बातों को सीखना और जानना आवश्यक है, परन्तु आधारभूत बातों की अनदेखी करने या उन्हें भूल जाने की कीमत पर नहीं।

    साथ ही यह बात यह भी दिखाती है कि हमारा प्रभु परमेश्वर कितना धीरज रखने वाला और निबाहने वाला है। उसके लोगों, उसके बच्चों के उसकी अपेक्षाओं पर खरे न उतरने और अपनी जिम्मेदारियों को पूरा न करने के कारण खिसियाने और परेशान होने की बजाय, वह फिर से उन्हें नए सिरे से सिखाने में लग जाता है; उन्हें सिखाता और दिखाता है कि उन्हें कैसे पुनः आरम्भ करना है और कैसे खोए हुए समय को पुनः प्राप्त करना है। प्रभु के अनुग्रहकारी रवैये का यही एकमात्र उदाहरण नहीं है। प्रभु द्वारा पतरस की असफलताओं के साथ व्यवहार करने के बारे में ध्यान कीजिए; पतरस ने न केवल प्रभु का तीन बार इनकार किया, लेकिन पुनरुत्थान के बाद प्रभु को देखने के बाद भी वह अपने मछली पकड़ने के काम पर लौट गया, और उसके साथ छः और शिष्य भी चले गए; लेकिन प्रभु ने फिर भी उसके साथ इतने प्रेम और धीरज के साथ व्यवहार किया, और उसे उसकी सेवकाई में बहाल कर दिया (यूहन्ना 21)। और पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन, पतरस ने ही भक्त यहूदियों के सामने प्रचार किया जिससे लगभग तीन हजार ने प्रभु को ग्रहण किया। वह पतरस ही था जो धार्मिक अगुवों के सामने दृढ़ता से खड़ा हुआ जब उन्होंने उन्हें सुसमाचार प्रचार से रोकना चाहा (प्रेरितों 4:8-20; 5:29-32); और यह पतरस की सेवकाई के द्वारा ही था कि सुसमाचार को अन्य जातियों में भेजा गया, कुरनेलियुस के घराने को किए गए प्रचार के द्वारा (प्रेरितों 10,11)। इन बातों के अतिरिक्त और भी कई बातें हैं जो दिखाती है कि पतरस कितनी सामर्थी रीति से पहले कलीसिया में उपयोग किया गया; केवल इसलिए, क्योंकि प्रभु उसके साथ धीरजवन्त रहा और उसे मौका देने के लिए तैयार रहा। इसी प्रकार एक निष्फल जन के प्रति धीरज रखने, उसके साथ निबाहने, और उसे अवसर देने का एक और उदाहरण यूहन्ना मरकुस का जीवन है, जिसे पौलुस और बरनबास के साथ सेवकाई का अवसर मिला, किन्तु वह बीच में ही छोड़कर वापस लौट गया। इस कारण पौलुस उसे फिर से अवसर देने और साथ ले जाने के लिए तैयार नहीं था, और इस बात को लेकर हुए विवाद से पौलुस और बरनबास अलग-अलग हो गए; पौलुस सिलास को लेकर चला गया, जबकि बरनबास यूहन्ना मरकुस को अपने साथ लेकर कुप्रुस को चला गया (प्रेरितों 12:25; 1536-39)। बाद में हम देखते हैं कि फिलेमोन 1:24 में यूहन्ना मरकुस का नाम पौलुस के सहकर्मियों में आया है, और उसकी सेवकाई एवं जीवन के अन्त के समय में पौलुस उसे सेवकाई के लिए उपयोगी कहता है (2 तीमुथियुस 4:11); और पतरस उसे अपने पुत्र के समान कहता है (1 पतरस 5:13); और उसी के द्वारा मरकुस रचित सुसमाचार भी लिखा गया। यदि बरनबास ने उसके साथ धीरज रख कर उससे निबाहा नहीं होता, तो संभवतः वह कलीसिया में फिर से इतना उपयोगी नहीं बन पाता। प्रभु का जाना-पहचाना, निष्फल अंजीर के वृक्ष का दृष्टान्त (लूका 13:6-9) भी प्रभु के इसी गुण को चित्रित करता है।

    यह मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए एक शिक्षा है कि लोगों से, उनके साथ जो उनकी अपेक्षाओं पर खरे नहीं उतारते हैं, व्यवहार करने में अधीर और गर्म-दिमाग़ के न हों; बल्कि प्रभु के समान, लोगों को अवसर दें, उन्हें बढ़ाने का प्रयास करें, उनके जीवन की कमजोरी के हिस्सों में उनकी सहायता कर के उन्हें दृढ़ बनाने का प्रयास करें, उनका सही पोषण करें। आने वाले समयों में, ये आज लड़खड़ाने और कमज़ोर दिखने वाले लोग, परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य और मार्गदर्शन से प्रभु के लिए सामर्थी रीति से उपयोग होने वाले बन सकते हैं।

    अब अगले लेख से, हम इन आरम्भिक बातों को एक-एक करके देखना आरम्भ करेंगे। अगले लेख में हम पहली बात, मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराने के बारे में देखेंगे।

The Elementary Principles – 4

Patience and Perseverance

    In the previous articles on the elementary principles, as an introduction, we have seen from Hebrews 5:11-14 how and why it is necessary for every Christian Believer to keep learning the Word of God, and simultaneously to keep teaching it to others as well. If a Believer neglects this aspect of his Christian living and ministry, then he starts going downhill in his spiritual maturity and growth, and eventually may come down to the level of being a spiritual infant or babe, and he needs to be taught the elementary principles all over again. The re-teaching of these principles is necessary, since these elementary principles are foundational for every Believer. Unless the Believer is well versed and established in them, he will not be able to comprehend the higher things, the more serious and advanced teachings of God’s Word, as the author of this letter has said in Hebrews 5:11-12. It was the expectation of the author, thereby, of God the Holy Spirit, under whose inspiration this letter was written, that the Believers to whom this letter was addressed should have matured to not only be teaching others, but also to receive the more profound teachings of God’s Word. But since they had not lived up to the expectations, therefore through the Holy Spirit, the author of this letter reminds them of these elementary principles by naming them in Hebrews 6:1-2.

    From Hebrews 6:1-2 we see that the author is not going into the discussions about these elementary principles, but only reminding them what these six foundational principles are; and then asking them to move ahead, to go on to perfection. The principles stated here are, repentance from dead works, faith towards God, doctrine of baptisms, of laying of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. The evident implication is that these Christian Believers were expected to revise and brush up their learning about these principles; and God the Holy Spirit residing in them would be helping them to do so. There is an important teaching here for the Christian Believers today, to keep revising and brushing up on their learning of the fundamental principles of faith, besides aspiring to learn the higher things. Keeping in touch with the foundational principles is very important, since in their ministry, a significant portion of their time will be spent communicating and interacting with either new Believers, or those still growing out of their spiritual childhood. Hence, they will need to use these foundational principles much more than the higher things. Moreover, as we have seen from Hebrews 5:14 in the previous article, the “solid food” belongs to those who are mature; so even after learning the higher things, they will not be able to use them amongst the spiritual infants and small children. For sure, the higher things have to be learnt, but not at the cost of neglecting or forgetting the foundational teachings.

    This also shows how patient and longsuffering our Lord God is. Instead of getting perturbed and agitated about His people, His children not living up to the expectations, not fulfilling their responsibilities, He once again gets down to giving them a fresh start; showing them where and how to start and to catch up on lost time. This is not the only instance of this gracious attitude of the Lord. Recall the Lord’s handling of Peter’s failures; Peter had not only denied the Lord thrice, but even after being forgiven by the Lord and restored back, even after seeing the resurrected Lord, he once again went back to his fishing, and six other disciples also decided to go with him; but the Lord once again dealt so patiently and lovingly with him, and restored him back to his ministry (John 21). And, on the day of Pentecost, it was Peter who preached to the devout Jews and three thousand accepted the Lord. Again, it was Peter who stood up to the religious leaders when they tried to prevent them from preaching the gospel (Acts 4:8-20; 5:29-32); and it was through Peter that the gospel was sent to the Gentiles, the household of Cornelious (Acts 10, 11). Besides these, there were many other ways in which Peter was mightily used in the first Church, all because, the Lord was patient and longsuffering with him, and was willing to give him another chance. Another instance of this patience, forbearance, and willingness to give another chance to the unfruitful, is the life of John Mark, who was given ministry opportunity with Paul and Barnabas, but left in-between, and returned, so Paul was no longer willing to give take him along; because of this Paul and Barnabas broke up, and Paul went with Silas, while Barnabas took John Mark with him to Cyprus (Acts 12:25; 15:36-39). Later we find that John Mark is mentioned as a laborer with Paul, along with others (Philemon 1:24), and towards the end of his time, Paul refers to him as someone useful for him in his ministry in 2 Timothy 4:11; and Peter refers to him as his son in 1 Peter 5:13; and we have the Gospel of Mark written for us through him. Had Barnabas not persevered with him, he might not have been restored back and used so effectively in the first Church. The Lord’s well-known parable of the fruitless Fig tree (Luke 13:6-9) also illustrates this attribute of our Lord.

    This is a lesson for the Christian Believers to not be impatient and short-tempered in handling people who do not live up to their expectations, but like the Lord, give people time and try to build them up, nurture them, help them in the weak areas of their lives by pointing those areas out to them and work with them to strengthen those areas. In times to come these currently faltering people, through the strength and guidance of God can turn into those through whom God works mightily.

    We will now begin to consider these elementary principles one by one from the next article. From the next article we will begin considering the first elementary principle, i.e., repentance from dead works.

Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    मसीही जीवन में बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता के लिए, यह अनिवार्य है कि मसीही विश्वासी परमेश्वर के सम्पूर्ण वचन को प्रार्थना के साथ नियमित एवं उचित रीति से ग्रहण करते रहें, अर्थात, उसका अध्ययन करते, उसे सीखते रहें, और फिर उसका पालन करें, अपने जीवनों में उसे लागू करें। जैसा कि पिछले लेख में उल्लेख किया गया था, यह करने में उनकी सहायता करने के लिए, उनके नया-जन्म पाने, उद्धार पाने के पल से ही परमेश्वर ने उन्हें अपना पवित्र आत्मा दे दिया है। वे पवित्र आत्मा की सहायता से जो भी सीखते हैं, उन्हें न केवल उसे अपने जीवन में लागू करना है, वरन उसे औरों को भी सिखाना है। ऐसा करना उनकी मसीही सेवकाई का एक भाग है जो प्रभु द्वारा उसके शिष्यों को दी गई महान आज्ञा में करने के लिए कहा गया है। पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि बहुत संभव है कि जिन इब्रानी विश्वासियों को यह पत्री लिखी गई थी, उन्होंने अपनी इन जिम्मेदारियों का निर्वाह करना छोड़ दिया था। परिणामस्वरूप, अब वे अपने आत्मिक जीवनों में इतने गिर गए थे कि उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन की गूढ़ बातें सिखा पाना असंभव हो गया था। वे एक बार फिर से आत्मिक बच्चों के समान हो गए थे, जिन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन की आरम्भिक बातों को सिखाना आवश्यक था, जैसा कि इस पत्री का लेखक इब्रानियों 5:12(b) में लिखता है। आज हम परमेश्वर के वचन को सीखने के इसी पक्ष तथा विश्वासी के जीवन में उसके तात्पर्य को देखेंगे।

    पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में, प्रेरित पतरस अपने पाठकों को, 1 पतरस 2:2 में लिखता है, “नये जन्मे हुए बच्चों के समान  निर्मल आत्मिक दूध की लालसा करो, ताकि उसके द्वारा उद्धार पाने के लिये बढ़ते जाओ।” पतरस द्वारा उपयोग की गई यह आलंकारिक भाषा एक सामान्य ज्ञान के बात है जिसे हम अपने आस-पास प्रतिदिन देखते हैं – शिशु और छोटे बच्चे दूध के अतिरिक्त और कुछ नहीं लेने पाते हैं, उन में दूध के अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य वस्तु को पचा पाने की क्षमता ही नहीं होती है; और यदि दूध के अतिरिक्त उन्हें कुछ और दिया भी जाए तो उस से उनकी बढ़ोतरी और विकास नहीं होगा, वरन, हानि हो सकती है। इसी प्रकार से इस पत्री का लेखक इब्रानियों 5:12(b) में लिख रहा है कि ये विश्वासी एक बार फिर से आत्मिक शिशु और छोटे बच्चे बन गए थे, जो “दूध,” अर्थात नवजात शिशुओं के आरंभिक भोजन, के अतिरिक्त और कुछ भी न तो ग्रहण कर सकते थे और न ही पचा सकते थे। उनसे “…तुम्हें अन्न के बदले अब तक…” कहने के द्वारा, लेखक उन्हें उनकी वास्तविक दशा से अवगत करवा रहा है; कि परमेश्वर के वचन की आरंभिक बातें उनके लिए एक बार फिर से आवश्यकता बन गई हैं। न केवल वे कुछ भी ठोस, जो लेखक उन्हें सिखाना चाहता था, लेने और पचाने में अक्षम हो गए थे, बल्कि उन्हें उस आत्मिक दूध, अर्थात आरम्भिक बातों, के अतिरिक्त और कुछ भी देना व्यर्थ हो जाता क्योंकि वे न तो उसे पचाने पाते और न ही उससे उनकी कोई बढ़ोतरी होती। इसलिए वह उन्हें उन छः आरंभिक बातों को जो इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में लिखी हुई हैं, याद दिलाता है, जिनमें उन्हें अच्छे से स्थापित होना है जिससे कि वे एक बार फिर से परमेश्वर के वचन की उन गूढ़ बातों को सीखने योग्य बन सकें, जो परमेश्वर ने उनके लिए रखी हुई हैं।

    फिर, इब्रानियों 5:13-14 में वह इस बात को और अच्छे से समझाता है, व्यक्ति द्वारा लिए जाने वाले आत्मिक भोजन से सम्बन्धित कुछ बातों को कहने के द्वारा। पद 13 में वह कहता है कि दूध पीने वाले बच्चों को तो धर्म के वचन की पहचान नहीं होती है, अर्थात, वे जो केवल आत्मिक दूध ही पीने वाले हैं, वे लोग वह हैं जो वचन में अक्षम, अनुभवहीन, उस से अनजान होते हैं। इसलिए, परमेश्वर के वचन की गहरी बातों से अनजान होना, उन्हें ग्रहण न कर पाना, उन्हें समझ न पाना, मसीही जीवन में शिशु होने के, आत्मिक अपरिपक्वता तथा बढ़ोतरी के अभाव के चिह्न हैं। फिर वह पद 14 में कहता है कि ठोस भोजन या अन्न, सयानों के लिए है। दूसरे शब्दों में, परमेश्वर के वचन की गहरी बातों को उन्हें देने का प्रयास करना जो उन्हें ग्रहण कर पाने और पचाने योग्य नहीं हैं, व्यर्थ है क्योंकि वे बातें उनके लिए हैं ही नहीं। और फिर पद 14 के दूसरे भाग में इस पत्री का लेखक उस आत्मिक परिपक्वता – सयाने होने को परिभाषित करता है, जिस के बारे में वह पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में बात कर रहा है, अर्थात वे “...जिन के ज्ञानेन्‍द्रिय अभ्यास करते करते, भले बुरे में भेद करने के लिये पक्के हो गए हैं।” दूसरे शब्दों में, आत्मिक परिपक्वता प्राप्त करने के लिए व्यक्ति की ज्ञानेन्द्रियों का नियमित और पर्याप्त रीति से भली और बुरी बातों की पहचान करने, उन बातों का आँकलन करने, का अभ्यास करते रहना अनिवार्य है। यह कुछ उसके समान है जो पौलुस रोमियों 12:1-2 में परमेश्वर की इच्छा जानने के बारे में कहता है – सम्पूर्ण समर्पण और परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता में चलते रहने के अनुभवों के द्वारा। अनुभव जितने अधिक होंगे, सँख्या तथा विभिन्नता दोनों में, परमेश्वर की इच्छा जान पाने की क्षमता उतनी ही अधिक बेहतर होगी। इसलिए, आत्मिक परिपक्वता प्राप्त करने के लिए, मसीही विश्वासी को भली और बुरी, दोनों ही प्रकार की परिस्थितियों, उनमें परखे जाने और जयवन्त होने से होकर निकलना पड़ेगा।

    किसी को भी इस से डरने की आवश्यकता नहीं है, क्योंकि मसीही विश्वासियों में न केवल परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा निवास करता है, उनकी सहायता एवं मार्गदर्शन करके पार ले जाने के लिए, बल्कि परमेश्वर की प्रतिज्ञा भी है कि वह अपने बच्चों को उनकी क्षमता से अधिक किसी भी परीक्षा में नहीं पड़ने देगा, वरन उस स्थिति में भी उसके साथ निकासी का मार्ग भी देगा (1 कुरिन्थियों 10:13)। इसलिए, एक प्रकार से इन भली-बुरी परिस्थितियों और अनुभवों से होकर निकलना उन्हें और अधिक फलवन्त करने के लिए की जाने वाली छँटाई (यूहन्ना 15:2) के समान है, या सुनार द्वारा आग से ताए जाने के समान जिसके द्वारा वह सोने या चाँदी में से अशुद्धताओं को जलाता और बाहर निकालता है, और उसे परिशुद्ध करता है (जकरयाह 13:9; मलाकी 3:3; 1 पतरस 1:7)। तात्पर्य यह है कि आत्मिक परिपक्वता और परमेश्वर के वचन की गूढ़ बातों को सीखने एवं समझने की क्षमता प्राप्त करने के लिए, व्यक्ति को निरन्तर विभिन्न प्रकार की परिस्थितियों का सामना करने के अभ्यास से होकर निकलते रहना पड़ता है। और इसके लिए एक सक्रिय मसीही जीवन अनिवार्य है, बजाए इसके कि केवल “इतवार के मसीही” बने रहें, जो केवल कुछ धार्मिक रीतियों और परम्पराओं के पालन करते रहने में ही रुचि रखते हैं, किन्तु इस से उनके आत्मिक जीवनों में कभी भी कोई भी आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी या परिपक्वता नहीं आती है।

    लगता है कि यह नहीं करने के कारण, अपने शिक्षक एवं सहायक, पवित्र आत्मा की आज्ञाकारिता एवं मार्गदर्शन में जीवन व्यतीत न करने के कारण, ये इब्रानी विश्वासी अपने आत्मिक जीवन में गिर कर अपरिपक्वता की इस दशा में आ गए थे कि उन्हें फिर से इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में दी गई आरंभिक बातों को सिखाने की आवश्यकता पड़ गई थी। अगले लेख से हम एक-एक कर के इन बातों को देखना आरम्भ करेंगे।

Introduction - 3

    

    For Christian growth and maturity, the Christian Believers need to feed on the whole of God’s Word prayerfully, regularly, and systematically, i.e., study and learn it, and then practise it or live by it. As was mentioned in the last article, to help them in doing this, God has provided them His Holy Spirit since the moment of their being Born-Again or saved. They should not only endeavour to apply whatever they learn with the help of the Holy Spirit in their lives, but also teach others whatever they have been taught. Doing so is a part of their Christian ministry, entrusted to them in the Great Commission commanded by the Lord Jesus to His disciples. In the last article we had seen that quite likely the Hebrew Believers, to whom the New Testament letter to the Hebrews had been written, had failed to fulfil these responsibilities. Consequently, they were now so fallen back in their spiritual lives and maturity, that it had become impossible to teach them the deeper things of God’s Word. They had reverted to a childlike stage, where it had become necessary to teach the elementary principles of God’s Word once again to them, as the author of this letter says in Hebrews 5:12 (b). Today we will consider this aspect of learning God’s Word and its implications in a Believer’s life.

    In 1 Peter 2:2, through the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Peter writes to his readers, “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” This analogy used by Peter, is a common-sense thing that we see around us every day – infants and babies cannot partake of anything else, other than milk; they are inherently incapable of digesting anything else, and even if something other than milk is given to them it does not help in their growth and development, rather, it may harm them. Similarly, the author of Hebrews is writing in Hebrews 5:12 (b), that these Believers have now once again become spiritual infants and babies, who cannot partake and digest anything other than “milk,” i.e., the initial basic food of the new-borns. The author by saying “…you have come to need…” shows them their actual spiritual condition; that the basic teachings of God’s Word had once again become a necessity for them. Not only had they become incapable of partaking and digesting anything solid which the author was wanting to share with them, but feeding them anything other than the spiritual milk, i.e., the basics, would have been futile; since they would neither be able to digest it, not grow by it. Hence, he reminds them of the six elementary principles mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, in which they ought to be well versed, so that they may once again become capable of receiving the deeper teachings of God’s Word that God had kept for them.

    Then in Hebrews 5:13-14 he explains it further by emphasizing certain points about the kind of spiritual food a person is partaking. In verse 13 he says that babies, i.e., those unskilled, meaning inexperienced or ignorant, in the Word of God, they partake only milk. So being incapable of comprehending the deeper truths of God’s Word is a sign of infancy in Christian life; implying spiritual immaturity and lack of growth in their Christian lives. Then, in verse 14 he says that solid food is meant for those who are mature. In other words, trying to feed the deeper things of God’s Word to those incapable of taking and digesting them, is a waste since those things do not belong to them. And then, in the second half of verse 14 the author of this letter defines the spiritual maturity – those who are of full age, or those who are mature are the ones, that he is talking about under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, i.e., they “…who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” In other words, to attain spiritual maturity one’s senses have to be regularly and amply exercised, to discern i.e., evaluate and judge the good as well as the bad things. This is something like what Paul said in Romans 12:1-2 about learning to discern God’s will – by full submission to God and through the experiences of living in obedience to Him; the more the experiences in both variety and number, the better the ability to learn and know God’s will. So, to attain spiritual maturity, the Christian Believer will need to go through and be tested, in both kinds of circumstances – good as well as bad or evil, and come out victorious in them.

    No one need be afraid of this, since not only do Christian Believers have God’s Holy Spirit residing in them to help and guide them through, but God has also promised that His children will never be tried beyond their capabilities, and even then, a way out will also be provided to them (1 Corinthians 10:13). So, in a sense going though the various circumstances, good or bad, is like the pruning process to make a person more fruitful (John 15:2), or the refining through fire that a goldsmith or silversmith does to the metal to burn and remove its dross, and purify it (Zechariah 13:9; Malachi 3:3; 1 Peter 1:7). The implication is that to attain spiritual maturity and discernment, to be able to learn and understand the deeper things of God’s Word, one has to continually be exercised through various kinds of circumstances, and therefore have to live an active Christian life, instead of merely being the “Sunday Christians” interested only in fulfilling certain religious formalities and rituals, which will never result in any growth and maturity in spiritual lives.

    Apparently, because of not doing this, not living in obedience to and under the guidance of their teacher and helper, the Holy Spirit of God, these Hebrew Believers, from a mature state, had fallen into this state of immaturity, and had come to require being taught the elementary principles all over again. In the next article, we will start on the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, one by one.
