The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (10)

To Listen to this message in English Click Here

God has provided His instructions for practical Christian living in His Word, the Bible; and we have four of them in Acts 2:42. These four instructions are also called the “Pillars of Christian Living.” In the earlier articles we have seen that by steadfastly following these four, the early Christians grew rapidly not only in their spiritual life and faith, but also in their numbers; and at the same time churches also continued being established. Because today, the Christians do not observe these four steadfastly. Instead, to show that they practice their religion and fulfill its formalities, they merely observe them as rituals. Therefore, neither do they grow in their spiritual and Christian life; nor do the churches grow and are edified. Over the past few articles, we have been looking at the third of these four pillars of Christian Living, the “breaking of bread,” i.e., partaking of the Holy Communion. In God's Word, the Bible, in addition to the four gospels, the main instructions about partaking of the Holy Communion are found in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. We have been looking at the things given in this section of the Bible under seven points. In the previous five articles we have seen and learned about the fourth of these seven points, i.e., about the purpose of the Holy Communion, and related things from 1 Corinthians 11:23-36. Today we will begin looking at the fifth point, partaking of the Lord's Table, from 1 Corinthians 11:27-28.

5. Partaking in the Holy Communion - verses 27-28 - (Part 1)

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in his first letter to the Corinthian Christians, the Apostle Paul gives some instructions for correcting their mistakes regarding partaking of the Holy Communion in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. By making it a part of God's Word, the Bible, the Holy Spirit has also ordained it for the observance of the universal worldwide church of the Lord Jesus. As we have seen in the previous articles, in this section, in verses 17-22 the Holy Spirit first rebukes those people, showing them their mistakes. Then in verses 23-26 explains to them the purposes of the Lord's Table and the implications of participating in it. After pointing out their mistakes, and explaining the proper way to partake, now in verses 27-28 the Holy Spirit shows the way to partake of the Lord's Table. Most traditional or denominational churches have a set ritual for partaking of the Lord's Supper, which is written in their books. On the day of serving the Holy Communion, the Pastor of the church and the people of the congregation read and speak out the printed ritual as per that written sequence; and they keep doing according to what is written in their books in the given order. On the contrary, here in God's Word, the Bible, in verses 27-28, there is no such method given, nor is any order of doing things been given. Moreover, there is no indication or instruction that local churches should create their own methods based on these verses and then require the church congregations to follow them.

In these two verses of God's Word, the Bible, the Holy Spirit has emphasized upon only one way of partaking of the Lord's table — the improper way. And then in the next two, i.e. verses 29-30, the consequences of participating improperly are given. The implication is that what is inappropriate and what is appropriate is determined on the basis of what is given in the previous verses, i.e., verses 17-26. Because in those verses not only the mistakes of the people have been explained, but also the purpose, implications, and things related to partaking of the Table have also been explained. One who pays attention to those things, ponders over them, and follows them, will automatically understand what is the wrong way, and what in contrast is the right way. The evident conclusion is that whatever is incorrect according to these verses is not to be done. For this, there is no need to give any other method, and instruct that it is to be followed, other than what the Lord Jesus has already given and established in the gospel accounts. The conscience of every participating Christian should bear witness to him, whether or not he is participating in the right manner according to God's Word. Whereas, if a written method is given to follow, it does not take long for any prescribed method to become a formality and ritual, as we commonly see happening in churches. Whether the participants are paying attention to the participation or not; whether their hearts and mind are prepared and ready to participate or not; whether their conscience is allowing them to participate or not; But still, in order to fulfill tradition and to show to the people, and to avoid answering the awkward questions that arise from their not participating, people go ahead and complete the formality, and participate in the Holy Communion; Without understanding that this would not be a blessing for them, but would be a reason for being found guilty and punished.

In the next article we will continue from here, and consider these two verses, 27-28.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (9)

To Listen to this message in English Click Here

From the instructions given in God's Word for practical Christian living, we are looking from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, about the third of the four pillars of the Christian life given in Acts 2:42, “the breaking of bread.” In the previous article we saw from verse 26 that by partaking of the Lord's table we also proclaim, i.e., witness about the Lord's death. We understood how doing this was not optional. Whosoever participates in the Holy Communion, automatically also becomes one who has to proclaim the Lord's death, i.e., has also to witness about the Lord's death. Moreover, we also saw two other important things related to this. The first thing is that there are some very serious warnings given in Proverbs about being false witnesses. Implying that, anyone who partakes of the Lord's Table, but his life does not bear witness to the Lord's death, brings himself within the purview of these grave warnings, and makes himself a partaker not of any blessings from God but of punishment. The second thing is that the Christian Believer is to participate in the table appropriately, by living a life that testifies of the Lord's death. Not participating in the Table does not absolve him of this responsibility of being a witness; rather, he then becomes guilty of disobeying the Lord, and once again becomes liable for punishment rather than blessings from God. Today we will continue from here and look further about preaching the Lord's death, i.e., being a witness to His death.

4. The Lord's instructions for the Lord's Table - Purpose - verses 26 - (Part 5)

To understand what it means for the Christian Believer to proclaim about, or to bear witness of the death of the Lord Jesus, we will consider some related verses from God's Word, the Bible. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle Paul wrote in his second letter to the Corinthian Believers "and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again" (2 Corinthians 5:15). The same thing is said in the context of the Christian Believer's body being the temple of the Holy Spirit "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). And it is also the instruction from God the Father, to receive His blessings, His people must separate themselves from the world and the things of the world "Therefore Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty" (2 Corinthians 6:17-18). That is, all three persons of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, demand this complete separation, submission, and obedience from the Christian Believer. All those who have accepted the Lord Jesus as Savior, have believed in Him, and have surrendered themselves to Him, it is mandatory for them to live their lives for the Lord. Everything in their lives, every aspect, every decision is to be for the glory of God as it is written in 1 Corinthians 10:31 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." This complete surrender has also been expressed as being a living sacrifice and having a renewed mind and life "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:1-2).

This life of complete submission and separation from the world is not something new that is unexpectedly imposed upon the Christian Believer after salvation. We saw in earlier articles that Acts 2 contains seven points related to practical Christian living, the first three of which were given in Peter's sermon to devout Jews. The third of the three things that Peter said is "And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation" (Acts 2:40); i.e., one will have to live a life of separation from the world. The implication is that while instructing one to surrender one's life to the Lord to be saved, it has already been made clear that those who join the Lord will have to separate from the world. During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, the Lord has repeatedly called for this separation. The Lord clearly told Nicodemus, the leader of the Pharisees, that unless he is Born-Again, i.e., is separated out from the world and born into the Kingdom of God, he cannot even see the Kingdom of God, much less enter it (John 3:3, 5). The Lord told the devout young man who came to the Lord seeking the way to eternal life that he must first share his worldly possessions with the poor – separation from the world, and then he must come to follow the Lord (Mark 10:21). After healing people, the Lord used to tell those who were healed not to sin again. The Lord told His disciples that to follow Him they must love the Lord more than their worldly family and their own lives (Matthew 10:32-39).

Therefore, the apostle Paul's saying in 1 Corinthians 11:26 that anyone partaking of the Lord's Table must also be a preacher of Christ's death is not giving a new requirement, but something that goes back to the Lord's earthly ministry, merely being expressed in some different words. Paul expressed his fulfilling this in his life by saying "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). Those who partake of the Lord's table participate with the understanding that they are the Lord's disciples, people who walk with the Lord. And the disciples of the Lord, or, the people who walk with the Lord, also have to follow what is written in Romans chapter 6 (please read it very carefully and seriously); else they will be false witnesses. Therefore, to partake of the Lord's Table casually, without understanding the seriousness and responsibilities of partaking of it, is to create serious trouble for yourself.

In the next article we will begin to consider the fifth point, how to partake of the Lord's table.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (8)

We are considering the sixth of the seven instructions given in Acts 2, which is also the third of four pillars of the Christian living given in Acts 2:42, i.e., “the breaking of bread” or the partaking in the Holy Communion, the Lord's Table. We have seen that for practical Christian living, these four ‘pillars’ have to be followed steadfastly. In the initial article on this topic, we said that we would learn things related to partaking of the Lord's Supper under seven points. These things are mainly given in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. For the last three articles, we have been looking at the purposes of the Lord's Table, based on verses 23-26 of this section, and have been learning the teachings and implications regarding partaking of the Table properly in accordance with those purposes, from God’s Word. In the previous article, based on verse 24 we considered the implications of partaking of the Lord's Table in remembrance of Him. Today we will look at what God the Holy Spirit commanded the Apostle Paul in verse 26, about participating in the Lord's Supper.

4. The Lord's instructions for the Lord's Table - Purpose - verses 23-26 - (Part 4)

It is written in God's Word, the Bible in 1 Corinthians 11:26 "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes." Here the Holy Spirit has written down for Christians a very serious matter; something, which is rarely taught and explained to the people of the congregation or Assembly at the time of partaking of the Lord's Supper. At that time this was said by the Apostle Paul to the people of the church in Corinth. But through its inclusion in God's Word, it has been made mandatory for all in the Lord's universal worldwide church. This verse tells all Christians that whenever they partake of the Lord's table, by partaking, they automatically also proclaim the Lord's death. That is to say that they also testify to the death of the Lord. Notice the structure of the sentence in verse 26; The Holy Spirit has not instructed that those taking part should also think about witnessing about the Lord, or about His death at times. Nor is it written that those who participate in the Lord’s Table, must then go and witness about the Lord, and about His death, as a separate or additional act. Rather, it has been written in clear words that the one who participates, automatically, also bears witness to the death of the Lord; i.e., also becomes a witness to the death of the Lord; And this is not a light matter.

Without the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord's coming to earth has no meaning; the gospel is nothing. If the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus are removed from the Christian faith, then the Bible and Christianity become just like any other concept of divinity in the world. That is why Satan continues to do his utmost to undermine and play down the importance of the Lord's death and resurrection, and prevent its preaching to keep people from believing in Him. And this is an irony of Christianity, that many of those who do not believe in the Bible, in the virgin birth of the Lord, in the death of the Lord, in the resurrection of the Lord, even they, to be considered righteous in the eyes of God, partake of the Holy Communion. But without the preaching and testifying of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, the gospel and the true Christian Faith have no existence.

We can learn and understand the importance of preaching the Lord's death from two things said by Paul in this same letter of 1 Corinthians. First, Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 "For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" i.e., the Lord had appointed Paul not to teach knowledge, but to preach the gospel amongst people. An important part of that gospel was also the ‘message of the cross’ i.e. the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Although the world may consider this ‘message of the cross’ to be foolishness; but to the one who believes in it, it is the power of God, and there is no power that is superior to God’s power. Secondly, in 1 Corinthians 2:1-2 Paul wrote, "And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified." Which, in different words, is a repetition of the first point. In other words, the purpose of Paul's ministry in Corinth was not to share or teach knowledge. He only shared with them about the Lord Jesus Christ and His crucifixion. In this context, Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians, "that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death" (Philippians 3:10). In other words, the goal of Paul's life was to know the power of the Lord Jesus's resurrection to learn about sharing in His sufferings, and to attain the likeness of the Lord's death. Whatever he learned from the Lord, he applied in his own life, and taught it to others under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

These things place before us the significance of the Lord's death in context of our subject, i.e., verse 26; But what is its practical application for us? Once again, notice what is said in verse 26. Every person who participates in the Lord's Supper automatically also becomes a witness to the Lord's death. Whether he agrees to it or not, but according to God's unalterable Word, according to what God has established, in God's eyes he is making himself, like Paul, a witness to the Lord's death and to the things related to it. By participating in the Table, he is accepting being responsible for carrying out the above things written down by Paul through the Holy Spirit, just as Paul did. In this, he has no option of consenting or refusing. If a person decides to participate in the Holy Communion, he automatically consents to being a witness of the Lord's death. Otherwise, he should not participate – which implies that he should not consider himself belonging to the Lord, i.e., being a Christian Believer. Because a disciple of the Lord or a Christian Believer has to participate in the Lord's Table. Therefore, no one can escape by saying that he had not consented to this, because his consent is implied in his partaking of the Holy Communion. This being a witness is like the flip side of the coin, without which the coin is invalid and worthless.

And if anyone does not bear this testimony, despite partaking of the Lord's Supper, then he becomes a false witness of the Lord's death. There are some warnings in Proverbs against being a false witness: The sixth of the seven things that God hates, is a false witness (Proverbs 6:19); A false witness will neither escape, nor will he go unpunished (Proverbs 19:5); And the false witness will perish (Proverbs 19:9; 21:28). That is, those who participate in the Lord's Supper as a ritual, as a formality, without knowing the purposes and responsibilities of the Lord's Table, bring upon themselves no blessing, but God's wrath and heavy punishment. But, to avoid improper participation, a Christian Believer cannot keep himself from partaking of the Lord's Supper; otherwise, he will make himself guilty of disobedience to the Lord, and will still earn for himself only punishment, not blessing from the Lord. Those who partake of the Lord's table according to its purposes and implications, continue to grow in spiritual life, and become partakers of God's blessings. But those who participate in it in an inappropriate manner, just to fulfill a ritual or formality, earn God's punishment for themselves, and also suffer it.

In the next article we will consider further the practical implications of proclaiming the Lord’s death.
