  • “यहूदियों और यूनानियों में कुछ भेद नहीं, इसलिये कि वह सब का प्रभु है; और अपने सब नाम लेने वालों के लिये उदार है।” (रोमियों 10:12);

  • “क्योंकि हम सब ने क्या यहूदी हो, क्या युनानी, क्या दास, क्या स्‍वतंत्र एक ही आत्मा के द्वारा एक देह होने के लिये बपतिस्मा लिया, और हम सब को एक ही आत्मा पिलाया गया।” (1 कुरिन्थियों 12:13);

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 2 - Fellowship (2)

In our continuing study on the growth of Christian Believers and the Churches through God's Word, we are now considering the teachings given in Acts chapters 2 and 15 regarding practical Christian living; And earlier we have seen the reasons for this. Over the past few articles, we have serially been looking at the seven teachings on this topic given in Acts 2. The last four of these seven teachings are given in Acts 2:42; And these four are also called the “Pillars of the Christian Living.” We have looked at five of these seven teachings, and now, from the last article, we have begun to consider the sixth teaching, i.e., the second pillar of the Christian life, “Fellowship.” In the previous article we saw that being in fellowship is not a new teaching given in the New Testament; Rather, this has been God's intention since the beginning of creation. God created man in His image to have fellowship with Him; And man, too, was to have fellowship with God and with other men. But sin created problems in this fellowship, consequently, not only was man's fellowship with God broken, but other things also came into his fellowship with other men (Genesis 3:8-20), and therefore, man's relationships with others did not remain as pleasing and harmonious as before. We also saw that whether fellowship is with God or with other men, the basis of fellowship is family relationships. Today, we will continue our study on fellowship from here.

Sin hindered man's fellowship - both with God and with other men. Where there is sin, there cannot be any fellowship – neither with God:

  • “When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; Even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.” (Isaiah 1:15)

  • “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2)

- Nor with men:

  • “For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” (James 3:16)

  • “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” (James 4:1-3)

As soon as sins are forgiven, the problem is resolved, fellowship and companionship are restored – With God:

  • “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1)

  • “For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” (Romans 5:10-11)

- As well as with men:

  • “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.” (Romans 10:12)

  • “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13)

  • “and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.” (Colossians 3:10-11)

In the previous article we saw that the basis of fellowship are the family relationships – both with God and with men. In the next article we will see how when our sins are forgiven and we are reconciled to God, we then come into a family relationship with Him. Also, how by truly repenting and receiving the forgiveness of sins i.e., being Born-Again, the true Christian Believers become members of the one worldwide universal family of God.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Things Related to Christian Living – 19

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 2 - Fellowship (1)

As part of the study on the Christian Believer’s growth through God’s Word, we are now studying Biblical teachings related to practical Christian living. We have seen that in Acts chapter 2, seven teachings are given, four of them being in Acts 2:42. The initial Christian Believers continued steadfastly in these four teachings; and they are also known as the “Pillars of Christian Living.” Of these four, we have seen about the first one, i.e., diligently and steadfastly studying God’s Word the Bible. From today we will take up the second ‘Pillar’ i.e., “Fellowship.”

Since creation, Fellowship has been an important aspect of man’s life. This fellowship was meant to be two-fold - fellowship with God, for which God used to come down to man in the Garden of Eden; and fellowship of man with man. Having created Adam, given him dominion over every creature and all the earth (Genesis 1:26); having planted a special Garden for him and placed him in it to tend it (Genesis 2:8, 15), God said “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him’” (Genesis 2:18). Here we see that since the very beginning it has been God’s intention that not only should man fellowship with Him, but should also fellowship with one “comparable to him.” Before creating Eve, God brought all the creatures to Adam, and Adam gave them all their names (Genesis 2:19). But there was also another purpose in God’s bringing all the creatures to Adam; it was to show to Adam, and have it recorded for all times in His Word, that amongst all the creatures created by God, there is none comparable to Adam and worthy of being his helper or companion (Genesis 2:20). Therefore, we see that mankind in general tends to live and stay in fellowship, in groups with each other. Man may have various kinds of animals as pets or for other benefits, and may even be closely attached to them, but families are only built in companionship with other humans, not with animals.

God’s Word shows us the necessity of living in companionship or fellowship, and how God has given us the necessary instructions and various examples for this in His Word. We see in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17), which are the core, or the gist of God’s Law, that the first four Commandments teach about the basis of man’s relationship with God - the basics of man fellowshipping with God. And the next six Commandments are about man’s having and maintaining a harmonious relationship with man; within the family, as well as in the society or neighborhood.  King Solomon spoke of the advantage of fellowship wherein one uplifts or improves the other “As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” (Proverbs 27:17). King Solomon also emphasized the benefits of fellowship or companionship “Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.” “Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?”; “Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9, 11, 12). The Lord Jesus sent out His disciples in pairs for their ministry (Mark 6:7). The Lord also promised that when His people gather together in fellowship, not only is He also there amongst them, but when they are of one mind, God will grant them their prayers “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:19-20).

The basic unit of this fellowship, whether with God or with man, is the family. God has called His people, His followers, His chosen ones, His children, and called Himself as their Father (Exodus 4:22; Deuteronomy 14:1; 2 Samuel 7:14; Isaiah 43:6; Jeremiah 31:9; Hosea 1:10; 2 Corinthians 6:18; etc.). Similarly, we see in mankind all over the world, that man tries to maintain a primary fellowship within his family, amongst his family members; and tries to provide for and protect his own family from others. To express a close relationship or attachment to others outside of the family, the names of familial relationships are invoked, calling the non-familial members to be “like a brother/sister,” or, “like father/mother,” or saying “he/she is like a family member,” or, “we are one family.” In other words, close fellowship and family-feelings are inherently interlinked in the psyche of mankind.

We will carry on from here in the next article, and see some other aspects related to fellowship.

Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Things Related to Christian Living – 18

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 1 - Word (11)

In our on-going study about the things related to practical Christian living, we are studying the seven things given in Acts 2; and are presently considering Acts 2:42 where the four things, also known as the “Four Pillars of Christian Living” are given. The first of these four pillars is diligently and steadfastly studying God’s Word. In the past few articles, we have seen from the Bible seven reasons why every Christian Believer needs to diligently and steadfastly be engaged in studying the Bible. Today we will consider another aspect of Bible study - the effects of God’s Word in the lives of those who accord to it its proper place and priority in their lives. We will see these effects through some Biblical references, and will just comment upon them. Generally speaking, since the verses are quite clear and self-explanatory, therefore, we will not be going into any discussion or analysis of the verses.

The Effects of God’s Word in a Christian Believer’s Life

1. Psalm19:

  • vs.7 – “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” God’s Word restores the soul and gives wisdom to the simple.

  • vs.8 – “The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;” God’s Word rejoices the heart and enlightens the eye

  • vs.9 – “The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether” God’s Word endures or stays forever, hence serves as an unchanging, perfect, and eternal standard to measure and assess all things.

  • vs.11 - “Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward” God’s Word gives warns and rewards the obedient.

2. Psalm 119: The whole of Psalm 119 is about the various aspects of God’s Word. Given below are few excerpts from it.

  • vs.1-2 - “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart!” God’s Word is a source of blessings who follow it.

  • vs.7 - “I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments” God’s Word teaches us to thank and praise God, and to worship Him.

  • vs.9,11 – “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!” God’s Word keeps us clean from sin and safe from sinning.

  • vs.98-100 - “You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts.” To those who abide in and obey God’s Word, it provides to them the kind of practical wisdom that cannot be acquired otherwise.

  • vs.105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” God’s Word, as a lamp, enlightens our path and leads us step by step.

  • vs.107 – “I am afflicted very much; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.” God’s Word revives us in times of our afflictions and problems.

  • vs.111 – “Your testimonies I have taken as a heritage forever, For they are the rejoicing of my heart.” God’s Word gives us joy, makes us rejoice.

3. Jeremiah 5:14 - “Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: Because you speak this word, Behold, I will make My words in your mouth fire, And this people wood, And it shall devour them” God’s Word, in the mouth of His people, becomes a consuming fire against their opponents.

4. Jeremiah 23:29 – “‘Is not My word like a fire?’ says the Lord, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” God’s Word works as a hammer that breaks the rock of unbelief against His people.

5. 2 Timothy 3:15-17 – “and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” God’s Word gives wisdom for salvation and faith in Christ; It is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. It thoroughly equips and perfects the Believers for good works.

6. Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” God’s Word pierces deeply, cuts, separates, and judges or discerns the thoughts and intents of hearts.

7. 1 Peter 1:23; 2:2 – “having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,” “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,” God’s Word is the eternal, ever-abiding source of new life for the Believers; it is the necessary nourishment for their spiritual growth.

These are just some of the advantages of abiding in God’s Word and obeying it. As we read through, learn, abide in, and obey God’s Word under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, He will show us many more, and help us to practically experience them in our lives. In the next article we will consider the second “Pillar of Christian Living,” i.e., “Fellowship.”
