Baptism - Necessary for Salvation? (7) – Points to Ponder

We have seen in the previous articles that there is no Biblical support for baptism being capable of washing away anyone’s sins. We also considered the verses commonly used in support of the argument that baptism saves, washes away sins, and is necessary for salvation. On analyzing these verses while keeping in mind the basic principles of Biblical interpretation, we saw that these verses instead of supporting the necessity of baptism for salvation, actually show that salvation is by faith, by believing on the Lord Jesus, and not by baptism. We also considered the devious implication of accepting the argument of getting saved through baptism, that it is tantamount to saying that the priceless blood of Jesus shed on the Cross of Calvary for the washing away of sins, and waters of baptism are equivalent. Since the waters of baptism can also accomplish the same for which Lord Jesus had to come down from heaven, sacrifice His life, shed His blood. Accepting the argument that baptism washes away sins also raises many Biblically untenable questions, because this argument either goes against, or does not harmonize with many other Biblical teachings. Today too we will continue to consider some other Biblical points that show how hollow and unacceptable this popular misconception of baptism washing away sins actually is.

In 1 Corinthians 1:13-16, Paul speaks about his priorities in his ministry; and as is apparent from these verses, to him, his preaching the gospel was far more important than his baptizing people. Therefore, the question arises, had baptism been even just as important as preaching God’s Word for bringing people to faith in Christ Jesus and for salvation, would Paul have neglected baptizing people? Would he not have been as zealous for baptizing as he was for preaching God’s Word? If baptism had any importance for the people getting saved, would he have been so forthright in stating his not baptizing, and about confidently saying that the Lord had not sent him to baptize? If baptism was actually as important for salvation as it is taught to be, then how does one explain Paul’s being committed to preaching the gospel at any cost so that people may be saved (1 Corinthians 9:19-22), and yet neglecting emphasizing baptism throughout his ministry, and never having any remorse for it; rather being happy that he had done his assigned ministry well and content that now a great reward awaits him in heaven (2 Timothy 4:6-8)? This can only be possible if the contrived false relationship between baptism and salvation had never been present, but has now been brought in through false teachings and put into the hearts of people.

Acts 19:1-6, especially vs.4 says that John the Baptist though baptizing a baptism of repentance, urged those coming to him for baptism to believe in the Lord once He was manifested. Take note that John the Baptist did not ask them to take another baptism in the name of Lord Jesus, but to believe in the Lord Jesus; neither John’s, nor a re-baptism in Christ Jesus’s name would save them, but their salvation would be only through believing in Christ Jesus. This is a very clear statement from the Scripture of the insufficiency of baptism to save, and of emphasizing faith over baptism – those baptized had also to believe on the Lord Jesus.

Baptism – infant/child or adult, as a liturgical procedure, has been and is being carried out in denominational churches all over the world, and in many denominations, after infant/child baptism a confirmation too is done when the person becomes a youth. But has this ritual baptism brought about any significant change in the life and habits of those been baptized and / or confirmed? The evident results of such baptisms the world over only go to show that baptism does not bring any repentance or abhorrence for sins, or any change from worldly ways in the person’s life. It is only when such a person repents of his sins, accepts the Lord Jesus as his Savior and submits his life to Him that his life begins to change. So, based on this everyday experience what conclusions can we draw? What is necessary – repentance and faith in the Lord or being baptized in His name? Which is actually efficacious in changing a person’s life and eternal destiny – baptism or faith in the Lord Jesus?

The thief on the cross who repented and prayed to the Lord Jesus was granted an immediate assurance of being with the Lord in paradise, by the Lord Jesus Himself, without being baptized. Where did the thief go – to paradise or to hell? If he went to be with the Lord in paradise, then baptism is not essential for salvation as it is made out to be. If he did not go into paradise as had been assured to him, then the Lord gave a false assurance and was a liar, since He deceived a dying person. Where does this leave the essentiality of baptism? If one sinner can enter heaven through repentance and faith, why can’t all others do so?

In Luke 18:9-14, in the parable told by the Lord Jesus, about the Pharisee and the Tax Collector who went to the Temple to pray, in verse 14, the Tax Collector, was declared justified by his prayer of repentance. The Lord did not deem it necessary for him to fulfill any other religious obligation or to take baptism, to be justified. His prayer of repentance was sufficient for God to consider him as “justified”; and who can condemn the person whom God has justified (Romans 8:33-34); whether or not he has taken baptism?

In the coming articles we will consider some other controversial issues related to baptism. If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

Since the waters of baptism can also accomplish the same for which Lord Jesus had to come down from heaven, sacrifice His life, shed His blood. Therefore, the implication is that the Lord’s sacrifice and shedding of blood, and a person’s getting baptized are of similar status and value! An absolutely ludicrous and unacceptable thought; but one that is a natural outcome if one accepts as true the argument of washing away of sins and getting saved by baptism.

Accepting this argument also raises many questions, which clearly show that this argument either goes against, or does not harmonize with many other Biblical teachings. It will not be possible to mention or look up all the questions, but we will mention a few of them. For those readers, who still are not convinced, and still believe that baptism is a requirement for washing away of sins and getting saved, please try and answer these questions to yourselves, and see if you are satisfied by your own answers.

John 1:12-13 states that “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” As per this portion of God’s Word, everyone who “believes in His name” (no mention of baptism, no suggestion either) becomes a child of God simply by the act of receiving Him or believing in His name. Now, if for some reason, this child of God by faith, is unable to get baptized, will he be allowed to enter heaven or not? If not, then it makes no sense in believing in or receiving the Lord; if yes, then entering heaven is a function of faith, not baptism. So, which is it?

In John 8:31-32 “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."” Why did the Lord Jesus not teach and emphasize about baptism instead of asking those who believed on Him to abide in His Word, which would then set them free? If baptism was so important, then did the Lord do wrong in not mentioning it to them, and only asked them to abide in His Word, whereas they would later be judged worthy only on the basis of their baptismal status? Was the Lord a charlatan and hypocrite to so shabbily treat those who claimed faith in Him? This shows how poorly a misplaced stand on baptism reflects on the persona of the Lord and thereby severely denigrates the one who knew no sin and in whom was no guile?

John 4:2 “though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples” – in light of the claimed importance of baptism, why did the Lord Jesus not baptize Himself, leaving it for His disciples to do so? Nor did He ever question them whether or not they had baptized those who believed, when He sent them on outreach ministries? Moreover, those who had been baptized, either by John the Baptist, or the disciples of the Lord Jesus, have never been called “saved” or “the people of the Lord Jesus” anywhere in New Testament – whereas doing this would have been appropriate and helpful in ministry. Even later, at the end of His earthly ministry, in His Great Commission to His disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), the Lord asked that only those who first became His disciples should be baptized. Why did He not tell the disciples baptize everyone so that at the least they are saved, and then try to make them His disciples? Why this neglect of such an important and decisive part of the ministry, and that too by the Lord Himself?

Why is it that in the Bible we do not find even a mention, let alone any details of any of the Lord’s disciples being baptized? Neither do we find the apostles and disciples alluding to their own baptism for salvation, or for entering heaven; nor do we ever find them emphasizing on its importance through examples of their lives? If baptism was indeed so necessary, wouldn’t it have been good for them to use their own testimony regarding it to teach and emphasize its necessity?

We will continue on this topic in the articles ahead, and consider some other Biblical facts that disprove this contrived necessity of baptism for salvation.

Baptism - Necessary for Salvation? (5) – Point to Ponder

In the previous articles we have considered three verses, Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16, and 1 Peter 3:21, that are often misused and misinterpreted to say that baptism is necessary for salvation; salvation cannot be without baptism. We have seen that when these verses are analyzed in their context, and through using the established principles of Bible interpretation, this gross misinterpretation associated with these verses gets clarified and it becomes quite clear that unlike the popular misconception, these verses do not support or affirm this contrived and unBiblical doctrine of the necessity of baptism for salvation. Prior to our taking up these verses, we had seen some points that show that nowhere does the Bible teach or imply the necessity of baptism for salvation. Today, we will consider one more such point, which further shows that baptism is not a necessity for salvation. But this also does not mean that baptism is unnecessary; baptism is very necessary, it has to be taken by the Born-Again Christian Believers, not for salvation but in obedience to the Lord’s command and to fulfil its purposes that we saw in the initial articles of this series.

Now pay attention to, and ponder over one very important fact; nowhere in the Scriptures is it ever mentioned or implied that any water can wash away one's sins, or purify one from sins. Whether in the Old Testament or the New Testament, according to the Bible, the shedding of blood is necessary for the remission of sins “And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22); implying that Biblically, anything that does not have the shedding of blood associated with it cannot ever cleanse any sin; else there will be a contradiction in the Bible. And there is no sacrifice or shedding of blood associated with baptism as such. But as it is written in 1 John 1:7, “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" and in Revelation 1:5, “and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood”, it is the shed blood of the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus that washes and cleanses away the sins. If the water of baptism could wash away sins, then why would the Lord Jesus have to shed His blood to do something which could easily be done with water? John the Baptist was already baptizing those who repented with the baptism of repentance (Matthew 1:1-11). The Lord God could have made it more effective and applicable, and the Lord Jesus would have had no need to shed His priceless blood! That then would have been a very simple and easy solution to the problem of sin.

Since the Lord Jesus Christ had to shed His sinless, priceless blood to wash away our sins, how can we then say that the waters of the world's rivers, ponds, tanks, etc. used for baptism are as effective as the priceless blood of the Lord Jesus Christ? Because to say that baptism washes away sins and brings salvation, equates baptism and the water of baptism to the sacrifice and shed of blood of the Lord Jesus. Can we dare to treat His blood so lightly and thereby insult Him like that? On what basis, can we say and believe that just as the priceless blood of Lord Jesus Christ washes away our sins and cleanses us from sins, the water of the rivers and ponds of the world can also do the same?

Now, do you understand the devious, derogatory lies and deception of Satan hidden in this corrupt matter of justifying salvation by baptism? Please do not fall into this mistake of belittling the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus and the shedding of His priceless blood, the consequences are very severe: “Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?" (Hebrews 10:28-29).

We will continue on this topic in the articles ahead, and consider some other Biblical facts that disprove this contrived necessity of baptism for salvation. If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word.

English Translation

Baptism - Necessary for Salvation? (4) – 1 Peter 3:21

In the previous two article, we have used some essential fundamental principles that help to interpret the statements of the Bible correctly, to correct the misunderstandings and misinterpretations of two verses commonly misused in relation to baptism. The principles we have used are: to consider everything in its context, to always consider along with other passages and verses related to that matter, to always consider along with other relevant Bible teachings, and to always consider understanding it with the meaning that its original or first audience understood and followed when it was first said or written. We also kept in mind two linguistic facts; first was that the Bible too uses figurative language, as is usual in normal conversation and use of language. The second was that as is in every language, the same word can have different meanings; and the correct or applicable meaning is determined by the context. For us today, for the things of the Bible it means how it was understood when it was first stated - that and that alone is the primary unalterable meaning of that word or phrase. Therefore, it is necessary to understand everything not only in its literal meaning, but also in its implied meaning or connotation, according to the context. If these basic principles are not taken care of, it becomes very easy to misinterpret and misunderstand Biblical statements; And because of these mistakes, there are misinterpretations and wrong teachings that are made and taught.

Then, based on these principles, we analyzed two verses, Acts 2:38, and Acts 22:16, that are very often used to support a very common but erroneous belief that baptism is necessary for salvation, that salvation without baptism is not possible. Through a proper analysis of these verses based on the above principles, we were able to understand that both these verses, contrary to popular belief about them, do not affirm the compulsion or necessity of baptism for salvation. Today we will similarly analyze another verse used for this argument, 1 Peter 3:21, using the above principles.

Another verse that is similarly misused because of its misinterpretation is 1 Peter 3:21 “There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ". From this verse also at first glance people assume the meaning that they are saved by baptism. But by looking carefully at the sentences of this verse, and in its context, it becomes apparent that this verse does not mean this.

The first sentence of this verse, using the immediately preceding verse 20 as an illustration, takes the flood of Noah's time and the rescue of eight people mentioned in it, as an antitype, meaning, an earlier type or symbol. Those eight people did not survive by going into the water without a security mechanism; but only survived by getting into the ark built by Noah. It was the ark, not they themselves, which floated on the water and kept them safe. Their safety and security in the ark built by Noah is a representation of the protection and security from eternal destruction in the Lord Jesus Christ the Savior. The destroying flood and the safe presence of Noah and his family in the saving ark served to confirm Noah’s testimony; of what he had been foretelling the people of the world. Similarly, baptism also is before the world as a testimony of the people being saved and made eternally secure by coming into faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:1). Considering the verse in its context, it is evident that in this verse baptism is not the saving agent, but the equivalence of the ‘antitype’ - the testimony of Noah and his family trusting in God to be their savior. For us today, baptism points to the one who saves and to the one for whose obedience it is taken i.e., the Lord Jesus Christ. Baptism is just a testimony of being saved through the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

And the same thing, that baptism is only the testimony given by a saved person of the salvation from his sins, is said in other places in the Bible too. So that people may not misinterpret this, Peter, led by the Holy Spirit, immediately, within the same sentence, also said that while by the water of baptism, only the filth of the body may be cleansed, but the purification of the soul is only by having a good conscience towards God, i.e., through forgiveness of sins. At that time, for Peter and the other disciples, baptism was simply baptism of immersion into water. That is why he writes that taking a dip in water for baptism can only remove the filth of the body, but the filth of the soul is removed only by being under the control of God. Also bear in mind, as had been reiterated and pointed out in the previous article, the Jews were quite familiar with external washing of the body being used symbolically as an expression of the inner cleansing from sins (Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1; John 13:10; Hebrews 10:19-22; Titus 3:4-7).
